    One year later with my fresh 1600 sp (W100 cam, light flywheel, straight cut gear, ported heads, home made side-tuck exhaust and home brewed SU carb induction (!) and I'm so happy with the performance. Nothing wrong an sp motor that's for sure. Thanks Mike I used several of your recommendations on this build including Cool=tins under the barrels.

    You can hear the difference, a nice "throaty" exhaust, and that single long induction tract a big benefit to low down torque. Made it a better daily driver.

      I think a lot of that is the cam and exhaust port mod. the combination of those makes it so strong out of the hole it rips.

    This was an awesome idea for the engine Mike! I have a few engines sitting around that I can do this with, just takes time to get it all together. I'm glad that engine worked out for you, and it sounds great!

    Way back when I was in college, my buddies and I built a Chevy small block motor. The bottom end was good, so we left it alone. A long duration, high lift cam, head with larger valves, headers, high rise dual plane intake with a Holley 650. We created a monster! The cam made all the difference in the world.
    With your VW build, I can hear the cam. The motor wants to rev! It also sounds beefy!
    I enjoyed watching your motor build. Some great tips for keeping the cost down, but doing it the right way. And the driving video is great to watch!
    Congrats on a great build.

    These cars really get under your skin. My first car when I got my license in the late 70's was a stock '68 1500. I haven't had one since, but when most dream of someday owning a supercar, I dream of owning a Beetle built to my spec. At this point it will probably never happen, but videos like Mike's help to keep my dream alive.

      Mike Fn Garage with today's masses, a single port would almost be enough for a weekender. But in order to save your rear end in traffic, duals all the way.. Long run I'm sure you'll get more bang for your buck with the duals, but the single ports are for holding up traffic in style 🙂

    Great comparison. I have a 58 with a 36 hp that is either period correct or matching engine. Just isn't quite enough. I have a 1641 brand new long block that I am going to have built to drop in. I want to use stock gear and tranny (which I am not for sure of ratio) for mainly around town and country roads and very little interstate. Really want to use a single carb and probably pea shooter exhaust and keep the 36hp on a shelf. Your suggestions would be greatly valued.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the best is the 1699 thick wall to ad to that 1600. get the 88 thick wall cylinders and put 90.5 cut heads on it the AA big valve. pretty cheap to buy drop some cool tin on that and you will have some real hp May do this later with that engine to show the difference. 1641 is real thin wall cylinders. I dont run them

    what was strange was back when they were new was some of them ran better than others . Larry got a 2cd hand one it was a 1600 `DP engine and it screamed . It would leave Jewburned in the dust.And Jewburner had a cheater cam .328 lift .? I am sure Larry had a stock .304 lift . It was all in the DP. To bad you did not have a hill that you could have done a MPH test. I screwed up ,Archie totaled his 75 out and wanted to sell me it for 400 bucks. It had AC. 28,000 miles.............

    So a single port is better for torque? My dual port 1600 pulls my 71 bus like dog shit from a dead stop. New Empi 34pict with a CB Magnaspark at 30deg. In cold weather it's bucking...my next idea is to ream out the heat riser tube on intake or go one step fatter on the jet. I got lazy over the years with fuel injection cars....I keep telling myself this is the hobby and it's good brain exercise troubleshooting.

    Love your video's mike even though I am not mechanically inclined 😂. I have a 59 bug that my wife and I drive quite a bit. Whenever she drives it she literally floors it everywhere she goes, my mechanic says it doesn't hurt it a bit. We've had the little car for 20 years and have had several different 36 and 40 hp engine's in it. Just had it rebuilt and was kinda hoping for a second opinion. Any thoughts my friend?

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if you can find a good core engine a 1600 or bigger would be a bit more fun. Lots of options but all depend on how much money you want to spend. If you want to make the 40hp engine run a bit better just need a set of 1385 jugs for it then also put a set of 1600 rockers on that. Gotta modify some stuff but not much to get the valve geometry right but then you wont be on the floor. but just above it.
