The embers from the fires get carried to new areas and the process repeats itself until the fire is either put out or dies from having burned up everything it can burn aka no more fuel.
I have friends who live in the hills...I don't believe any fires are near them, but at least not yet. These residential areas are total firetraps with very narrow, winding roads and houses surrounded by vegetation.

This unfortunately happens when you have a lack of volunteers. It's how many people in that state and they can't get the required number of volunteers that stop these fires every single year. I feel for the loss but at what point do we say, Enough is enough and actually put the time and effort into stopping these things when there is a yearly occurrence?

I don’t think people deserve to lose their home, their pets, their businesses . Yes some have celebrity, it’s is LA, but it’s not the Hollywood hills either . Some people with mobility issues must be rescued . Plus the rescue workers / fire fighters are in danger . Wild life, protected land, land marks destroyed . I wouldn’t say “oh well” .
A lot of normal people live in these houses, they typically are the people that moved to California in the early days before housing costs went up so much. In many of the most expensive/exclusive neighborhoods you’ll still find old couples who bought their house on a middle class income and their normal sized house will be sandwiched between giant mansions.
So do you have the same opinion of the people who live along the Gulf Coast in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida? Because they are completely in the way of hurricanes, so by your standards they too are "doing this to themselves" every time a huge storm comes ashore there.
