- In this video we try and answer the question, which glass paint should I use. There is no simple answer to this as different glass paints are better at doing different things.
Glass Paints can be split into the flowing ones and the thick peelable water based ones. The flowing ones are available in both waterbased and solvent based formats.
In addition to this there are special paints like the oven bake ones which are dishwasher proof once cured.
You saved me a lot of headaches from experimenting and overspending on projects. Loved the feature of your artwork in the video frame as well, nice touch and nice work.

I used oil paint on a window when I was in art school. It looked like stained glass, allowing light to pass through.
+1 for gallery glass. Been making beautiful pieces with it for years.
This is amazing and very helpful. Thank you so much. Definitely gonna give a few of them a try.
Excellent demonstration and explanation. Super appreciative! Subscriber from Florida, USA
Thank you.
Greetings from Selkirk Michigan . Excellent presentation 5 of 5 stars *****
Thank you for the video! I want to paint on the glass bottles around the house for reusing purpose and was looking for the right glass paint. Glad I came upon to your video :)
Glad it was helpful. Hope you enjoy your crafting.
Pebeo Virea rocks! I used it on some glass adornments for outside statues. Once baked they don't fade and a lot of rain and cold hasn't seemed to effect them either. Michael's often has 50 and 60% coupons so it softens the high price.
Thank you for commenting. It's nice to hear other peoples opinions. As you say, once baked they are the "strongest" glass paint I know.
is this what you used for outdoor paints? www.firemountaingems.com/itemdetails/h206002bs
Yes. I've always assume, because it's dishwasher proof, it will stand up to the rain etc. So far have had no issues with it. Here a window I did with the Vitrea 160 th-cam.com/video/RNEdyCeKUVg/w-d-xo.html
I remember in my childhood I used to have those peelable glass paints, I loved making stickers with them.
Damn I can still smell the paint
Excellnt video!
I have been doing stained glass art for over 20 years & during that time I have only every used Marabu paints for their jewelled colours which I have loved. However, I ordered some Marabu paint colours I was running out of, just before Christmas. After they arrived I set to work, but I was horrified to discover the new colours (matched with the old by colour numbers on the old pots) were drastically different. Not only were the colours different, the paint also has a semi-Matt sheen to it, looked dull & very unattractive. It is clear to me that Marabu have changed their paint formula & gone from a solvent based paint to a water base one, perhaps to be eco friendly. Needless to say I am now on the look out for a new glass paint brand.
Because of the nature of my painting work (I make tea light holders with designs inspired by medieval church stained glass) I need dark, jewelled colours (you dont find many church windows painted in pink! LOL) that replicate church windows, so pastal shades & anything even vaguley matt, is out!
Can you or anyone recommend a good brand of glass paint?
I would be massivly greatful. Cheers x
Hello, can you please add your recommended list on the description? Thanks
Very helpful video thanks. Answered most of my questions in one hit.
Great to hear!
My first glass painting was 3’x3’ 1/4”thick glass. The design was so large, I had to work very quickly. I used Pebeo Vitrail Opal. I didn’t want it transparent. I noticed that dust collected on it, as each section took days to dry. Also, the relief outline lines were so long, they ended up being somewhat shaky. Does anyone do large glass paintings? I would like to pick up some tips, so I can improve. I conpleted my art piece last week and plan on selling it. Is there a market for large pieces or a place where glass painters can sell there art? Thank you. Your video was informative and I plan on seeing what other videos you have.
I'm interested in the two opaque paints you can was that you moved to your left side... which ones are they? thanks, great video!
hello, I'm going to be doing a big glass painting for one of my windows. is there a washable paint that does not need baking?
Very helpful! Is there a best-method to achieve a uniform gradient from one color to another within the same space? Say in a 10" x 10" square where you want it to go from a dark shade of red to a light shade of red evenly from one end to the other. I'm picturing this with the Pebeo Vitrail solvent based paints.
have you tried the new folkart murano paints they are awesome !
Where to buy pls ty
So helpful... thank you so much!!!
Hello
Thank you for your video
Can you tell me the marks that are thick
and brands that can be baked
A very big thank you
Thank you for your presentation. I have used the transparant orange Pebeo Vitrea 160 on glass that is in my shower wall. I wasn't able to put it in the oven of course as I painted the glass which was already in the shower. What would you suggest I use to paint over my painted glass now to protect it? As it's in a shower it will frequently get wet and also will need cleaning to remove soapy water.
Thanks for the information. I hope you will be able to answer my question. I am planing to paint the countertop backwall of my wet bar (which will be glass). I am planning an abstract design and the surface that I paint will be stick to the wall. I am not sure if the silicon (which they use to stick glass to the wall )will be visible or not? Can I play with the paint on glass like on canvas?
Kind regards
Thank you for the video!! Any paint of the same kind I may use to airbrush?
Sir...Can we use water based paint in froastred glass
Une technique à développer ! Malheureusement en France on ne note pas une véritable ouverture d'esprit concernant les loisirs créatifs !
While drawing on glass which is better acrylic painting colors or glass colors?
What do you recommend for the best durability in non-food use items which will be handled often? Specifically, I'm looking to make a large number of "coins" out of fully etched glass "flat marbles" (like would be used in a vase or fish bowl). I'm leaning toward enamel spray paint with a primer for the ease of application and what I assume to be better durability. I'm not sure whether baking is advised with enamel spray paints, but I intend to try it. As I said they would be handled regularly and they'd be stored together in large pouches, so lots of clacking against one another. Does this seem to be a suitable solution, do you have any recommended improvements to the process, and/or do you recommend an altogether different approach for this application?
Thanks for your time!
Could you please advise which paint to use for an external front door. I would like to paint some.of the shapes a different colour but the shapes are leaded on the external side, the inside of the door is plain glass. Thank you
Hello,What type of paint is used to place artist signature on stained glass design?
Many thanks for the info, and apologies if I am asking questions that have already been answered but ......
1. Can the paints within each range be mixed to achieve other shades and colours?
2. Can oil/water be added to the respective ranges to provide variations in transparency?
My interest would be in using these for leaded windows, as a kiln is out of my price range!!
It’s very useful and fantastic. I wont to know from where I can flowing colors?
I'm not sure where abouts in the world you are but different brands of the flowing paints can be bought in most coutires. I get much of mine through Ebay. The popular solvent brands are:
Pebeo Vitrail.
LeFranc & Bourgeois Vitrail
Marabu GlasArt Vitrail
DecoFin Glass
Hope that helps.
Glass Painting thanks to your interest, I’m live in USA, and I like painting on glass very much. And all the time I try to paint but maybe I don’t have a good Technique
Well you can certain get the flowing paints in the USA. Both Amazon and Ebay have the Pebeo Paints etc. We do have a short course (free) on glass painting. It shows some of our techniques so if you go through that you might pick up some tips.

Is it ok to use on a window without baking the paint?will it last long??pebeo solvent 160
Thanks you so much for information I would soon try it 😊
Hi, I find the Vitrail paint ruins my brushes - should I be cleaning them with turpentine instead of water?
Thank you😊
Thank you ❤
Hi, thanks for this information. I have a Tiffany style glass lamp shade (not vintage) that I would like to alter somewhat in the coloring. Is it possible to paint over another color? I was thinking of using opal type finish with colors like soft gold, bronze, etc. Have you ever tried anything like this?
Hey thanks for doing the video I've been looking for best glass paint to use since I started and I wish you would do another video that shows these and other types of paints after being in direct sunlight for a month. Some colors fade actually to clear or milky white. The colors I would ask you test the most are purple pink and some red and blues. Purple I just can't seem to find or make happen. It starts fading in a month.
Thank you for the comment. Probably not as in depth as you would like but you will find more information about the legevity of paints here: th-cam.com/video/vKO3BfEOPhs/w-d-xo.html
@@GlassPainting Thanks for the reply I'd like to show and maybe collab with you on what I figured out already but that dreaded see through purple eludes me I hope with solvent based this will solve my issue but I do like the thick water based type.
I have found that some of the solvent paints need to be lightened in order to make them transparent/translucent. Obviously black and white colours are never transparent. Let me know how you get on.
@@GlassPainting I been thinking about it too watched the video and I'm serious I would like to collab on the video. After this painting I'm doing I'd like to go through mine and do a after 30 days in the sun paints. I had my purple issue but I can show what other advances I made.
@@GlassPainting hey sorry about the wait I've been uploading my music with the paintings as the video but the other pieces that have done 90 days I'm going to show the progress. Plus I actually found a half of a small sliding glass window so that'll be the tests in the far future lol
Great thanks
Love this but,the paint is kind of expensive ty for this wonderful video,I do know what brand to buy..what type of picture glass to get?
There are lots of brands of paint including some cheap imports. I find those OK to practice with but wouldn't use them for my proper work as they have neither the colour or the longevity I like. Then type of glass doesn't really matter, you can even use OHP film or perspex.
Charge accordingly. 🙂
That's beautiful 💙💜🖤
Do all of these paints require a piping as you termed it or a "liquid lead liner" as gallery glass calls theirs? I have made pieces using gallery glass but currently have a piece where the details are likely too fine for the piping which tends to be a bit thick.
I'm use Gallery Glass paint but it's difficult to find so I bought DecoArt glass paint. Didn't like the end result because that paint is too opaque. Gallery Glass paint is transparent and see through when held up to the light. Can you thin it out or add something to the DecoArt glass paint to make it more transparent? Thanks
Hello from Joe in Indiana USA. Thank you for this and all your other awesome videos. I've watched many of them recently and I've learned so much from them with your instruction. I've also managed to purchase some of the recommended products. I do have a question I am hoping you could field. I am interested in glass painting candle jars holding soy wax candles. I am currently working with Pebeo Vitrea 160 using the bake technique. Do you think a painting on the side of a candle jar would hold up throughout the candle burn cycle? I noticed you had a peal and stick painting on a Christmas candle in this video so evidently that held up pretty well. Anyway, just curious your thoughts on Vitrea 160 in candle jars as well as any other recommendations you may have with this scenario. Thank you once again. It's been a pleasure learning from you.
I'm 99% sure that you will have no issues with the Pebep 160 paint. It has been designed so it can be baked in the oven so the temperatures produced by a candle shouldn't cause an issue. I have decorated candle holders with it without having any problems.
I am making a greenhouse out of old discarded windows and I like to paint some of them what is the best paint to use ? and should I keep the paint on the inside of the greenhouse either way it has hold up against the weather.
Have you figured out what paint to use on your windows? I am working on a similar project and would like the windows to remain transparent but with color. I tried the Pebeo Vitrail Transparent but it left a “stained glass” effect with one coat (I will try a second coat to see if it can even out without it being to dark).
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Hey I am buying miron jars what they are is glossy black airtight jars but I wanted to turn them in to glossy opaque red jars is this possible if so what should I use
Hi, your video is really helpful. I was thinking a lots of which brands I will use for the windows in my house and decided to go with gallery glass. My question is: can it withstand the heat of the sun in the summer? My living room’s window is the place where to get the most sunlight. If not, which ones should I use? Thanks so much
If you can bake it I would recommend one of the oven bake brands such as the Pebeo Vitrea 160. If you can't bake it then one of the decent solvent based paints (such as Pebeo Vitrail).
I am experimenting with adding a crystal clear UV resistant varnish to the finished piece but it's a little early to gauge any benefits at the moment.
@@GlassPainting hi! Thanks for the video, very helpful. I assumed you cannot use the flowy paints on a window that you cannot take down, right? So then for non-removable windows the only option is the think paint, is that correct?
I'm wondering what some Limey is doing wearing a sweatshirt that says "Michigan" on it.
WILL THEY WORK ON METAL LIKE TOBACCO TINS THAT HAVE HAD ORIGINAL PAINT REMOVED PLEASE TA
Certainly the Pebeo Vitrail, Prisme and Fantasy should work fine on metal. You get some very "unusual" finishes with the latter two where as the Vitrail is a standard transparent colour.

a link to the paints youd recommend?
Personally my favourites are the 2 Pebeo Paints: Vitrail (Solvent Based) and Vitrea 160 (Waterbased). It does depend on what sort of glass painting you want to do.

Thank you for your time and dedication...😘💒💯
You are welcome . I enjoy doing it !
Please can anyone help me find glass paints that I can use for a garden project? So it needs to be weatherproof without baking as the glass is big. I’m in UK thank you 🙏
Hi, I’ve got these small diffuser glass bottles right and I want them to have a black colour, right now they’re clear so which one would you recommend for me to use to make those bottles black and I also put perfume oil inside them so I’d need a paint that will not come off after I put the oil in so which one would be the best
Must admit I've never tried that. I would guess at a bake on glass paint like Pebeo Vitrea but I would suggest testing first.
I'm looking for a good glass paint that can be baked but is not as transparent.
I tried DecoArt Gloss Enamels but they are inconsistent in the finish. Sometimes they dry to a high gloss, others a very dull finish. Any suggestions?
The only two oven bake ones I have come across are Pebeo Vitrea and L&B Glass and Tile paint. I don't think the Vitrea comes in opaque colours but the L&B has about 24 different opaque colours. I am literally trying this one out now and the review will be my next video in a couple of days. (I am however mostly using the transparent colours rather than the opaque ones.
@@GlassPainting Hmmm...never heard of L&B. Are you in the U.S. and if so, where do you get it? I will do a search for it now and maybe try a bottle or two! Thank you!
Hi,
No I'm in the UK. Have had a look around and I can't find any suppliers of the Lefranc & Bourgeois Glass and Tile paint. Sorry. The Pebeo Vitrea is available. Seemed very expensive on Amazon but there are some cheaper listings on Ebay.
You cannot use solvent paints with children and they must! be used in a well ventilated area
@picti shell This type of Glass Art is not for kids. Artists know about proper ventilation.
A rather foolish comment, considering that the paints are for glass, once again, for glass! How often do you let your kids play with glass?!
this is a nice video. but ou should at least put the names of those products sir.

@@realynnmicutuan3980 A valid point. I do think most of them are named in the video and there is more information in the article: www.glasspainting.co.uk/glass-painting-questions/which-glass-paint-should-i-use
Hope that helps.
@@GlassPainting Thank You so much, sir.
