i would recommend doing some interval speed work as well, so that you can go faster during your long runs, and it helps your normal speed feel like a lower intensity.
john c I’m going to try that tomorrow! I’ve been running too since quarantine took place, but sometimes I feel like I’m starting to get mentally tired of it. I ran my furthest of 8.5mi in April, but haven’t run anything close to that this month.
On Sept, I went to the Dr and found out I had very high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I’m not fit AT ALL. I made a lifestyle change and signed up for the gym on October 1. My goal was to be able to run a mile non-stop and not slowing down. I started with a walk/run interval. I could barely run for 1 minute without wanting to pass out. As the weeks went on, I would add time by telling myself “just one more minute”. It’s been 10 weeks since I first started and my last long distance run was this past Friday. I ran for 26 minutes non-stop. My pace was slow but my breathing was in rhythm and my body was relaxed. I probably could’ve made it to 30 minutes. It was probably the first time I experienced a real runners high. For those having a hard time running longer, when you want to stop, tell yourself “just one more minute”.
I'm a beginner runner and have only been running for about two/three weeks. These tips helped me run my first mile ever, and I did it in 10 minutes! So thank you for making this video. It helped me a lot! My mindset when it comes to running is changing, but the change is GOOD.
Madeline Moore the best tip is Don’t Run hard all the time just do slow longer runs and get as much miles in a week that’s how you’ll improve Just don’t go every run trying to go 100% effort because you’ll either get injured, over trained or Be put off it
Logan Williams precisely. on my running team, each week we do say one day long run, next few days easy, then a speed workout - i will say it’s rather effective 😂
@@Desilv I ran pretty regularly from March to August but less regularly when school started. However I’ve still made progress and ran 2 miles a few times in the summer at 9:30-11:30 pace (2 miles is my longest distance). Since running isn’t my primary form of exercise anymore, I don’t do it as much but am still pleased with my progress.

Hi Holly, I tried what you talked about and I like it. I’m the firefighter paramedic that lost approx 185 pounds. (I’m pretty sure I told you this before) I did that by watching some of your videos about running. I have been running about 5 years and I’m always looking for ways to improve so I watch your videos. Boy what a difference in my life it made. I went from being the big guy at the fire house to the guy that always goes downstairs on duty and works out. At my heaviest my waist size was 60 inches. Today 34 inches. When I was done with all my weight loss I had to have skin removed around my waist. Thanks once again and maybe I will post some pictures before and after what I looked like. I used to be able to run 3 to 6 miles without stopping. I stopped for 6 years and now I'm just trying to get myself up to a mile. I'm going to try this. Thank you. Getting old sucks.
I’m getting back into running after a long break & this workout is such a great way to diversify my short 1.5 mile runs and distract me from being frustrated at how hard they have been.
So grateful for you guys to share this experience and expertise so generously. At 43 years of age I’ve only just started running a week ago and I can already see improvement in form and stamina - I didn’t think it would happen - but the human body is so magical at transformation! I get a lot of help from TH-cam in this and generous coaches like you. Thank you once again.
I practice the WHM pretty regularly and I started running after my workout at the gym. I noticed myself doing deep breaths halfway through my running and it really does help
TRE coaches are awesome! For breathing drills I place my hand on my stomach for 20-30 seconds throughout a run to make sure I’m belly breathing. I have sinus issues so the nose breathing is often too difficult. Also added in 30 sec per 1 or 1.5 mile walk breaks for my long runs of 10+ miles and really helps reset form and I find my recovery is much quicker. For reference, I started with 15 second jog by 60 second walk 2 years and 80 pounds ago.
Since the gyms have closed, I've been trying to 🔍 on running. Its not easy, but I told myself what else are gonna do. I find your advice very helpful. Glad I found your channel.

Coach Holly, you're the cutest! Thank you so much for these tips. I want to be a runner, and next week I will implement your techniques, starting with a minute jog throughout my walking, and working on my breathing!
I don't like doing them, but intervals once a week are the best way I've found to increase distance. But I mostly do trail running, where the hills are the real "problem" (but also what makes it so much fun).
That's what I see a lot of people doing when I run and it makes them feel exhausted and stop. They run with their mouth open. My longest run has been 3 hours non stop and that was doing my first half marathon back in october. I have a 15k this Sunday and a half in about 2 more weeks... Running the LA Marathon in March. My first marathon ever!

I used to be so good at running like I was at the top 5 of my class at running the fastest mile. I used to run with this one other girl and she really helped me improve by running with me, sadly she is in another class now so I don't really have her guide anymore. So I switched and I run with my best friend now, but recently I haven't been working out or improving because my mental state isn't well, so I've been just trashing my body. The most recent time I've ran I was good in the first 2-3 laps but I couldn't keep up when it came to the middle of the second lap. My running friend noticed and wanted to help but our PE teacher is really strict and doesn't let us walk, so she had to leave me. I was so disappointed in myself. But here I am the next weekend searching up tips to run and working out like crazy lol.
I have a minor in vocal singing (which includes lots of breathing technique/practice) and find it humorous how she says to use "deep belly breathing" but then proceeds to only expand her rib cage lol.....When breathing from the diaphragm most of the expanding should be done from the belly--not the ribs. A good way to practice this is by laying done flat on the ground and take deep breaths, you'll notice your belly move up and down, this is proper breathing. Infants do it all the time but somehow adults struggle. Proper breathing will definitely benefit us runners.
Awesomeness is what you are thanks for the helpful tips... could you do a video on cold weather running... the breathing of cold air is not easy... appreciate any pointers. TY🏃♂️🤗💕
My advice for beginners would be. Make the time duration of the whole run/walk longer and longer. Then get to be able to run a hour and a half(1.5 hours) at a run/walk alternating speed. Then you are leveled up to level 5 and your stats increased.
Running outside is so challenging, but once I get it done,I feel great, the more u do it the easier it gets, stretch before u start a run,I then warm up walking 10 minutes, then I run,I been learning thru the years,
Holly. I know this is a older video. But I got a question. I stumbled upon this video because I’m struggling with breathing while running. I did the workout in the video today. Ran for 1/4 mile , did 10 air squats and 30 second plank , then walked for one minute than ran another 1/4 mile and repeat. Until I did 3.3 miles. Should I aim to do this workout once a week?? Or more
I joined the soccer team this year and we have practices. Because it’s so much running we have to run a mile or 2. Sometimes we just run 4 laps but I have a lot of trouble with breathing and running for a good amount of time.
I always run out and backs. This way a 10 mile run is not a big deal because I’m only out 5. There’s only one way to get back and that’s 5miles back. Since I want it to end faster rather than slower I won’t want to walk. :)
Tough Mastermind run away from your starting point for half of your total mileage. This will force you to run your mileage goals. If you choose to run for time the same thing applies.
I just started running, I’m really out of shape... plan on doing a half marathon in roughly 8 months. I really hope this youtube channel helps me learn haha
I ran 8.1 miles today 😎. I’ve been running consistently for almost 2 months. I feel that my heart and lungs can take the distance. The problem is my legs. I get aches and pains, not short of breath.
I’ve always been overweight and I’ve been trying to lose weight by running but I could only do 500 meters before I was to tired After I watched this video I went for my usual run and took your advice and I ran my first ever mile run Thank you so much I think I will actualy start to see some improvement now
Great topic! I’m using similar methods as I try to stretch myself out and increase me weekly mileage. I find that body position is key especially up hill!
One thing that always holds me back is the pain I get in my shins. I’ve only just got back into running for like 3 days but it hurts when I run. I’m guessing it’s just because my muscles in that area are very weak.
I used to need an inhaler whenever I ran, but running helped me not need one at all anymore. Mine was really mild, so this will not work for everyone, but it you have mild exercise induced asthma, it does get better if you keep at it.
@@oliviamcgie5861 I'm gonna ask my doctor about that. I'm off my maintenance now, and wanted to get stronger so I just ran, didn't think of consulting first. That was so wrong.

Proper breathing will definitely benefit us runners.
is that the golden Gate Bridge in the background? a running tutorial and amazing photography!
Awesomeness is what you are thanks for the helpful tips... could you do a video on cold weather running... the breathing of cold air is not easy... appreciate any pointers. TY🏃♂️🤗💕
Check our channel. Just published ones a few weeks ago!
She is a tank! 💪
1st ways is 0:41
2nd way is 1:04
Hope I helped you!
I needed this, thank you! 😊
My advice for beginners would be. Make the time duration of the whole run/walk longer and longer. Then get to be able to run a hour and a half(1.5 hours) at a run/walk alternating speed. Then you are leveled up to level 5 and your stats increased.
Running outside is so challenging, but once I get it done,I feel great, the more u do it the easier it gets, stretch before u start a run,I then warm up walking 10 minutes, then I run,I been learning thru the years,
This was great advice, thank you.
Jason Maguire I do the same exact thing! Makes it so much easier. - Holly
@Jason
didn't get u... would you plz explain.
Are you still doing your race?
@@Kelly_Ben Yes, although with everything happening in the world the race isn’t happening so I’m just doing it “unofficially” on my own
@@chris123chris82 Maybe you can have family or friends meet you at the finish to give you some of that race day support and excitement? Good luck!
This helped so much thanks so much
I ran 8.1 miles today 😎. I’ve been running consistently for almost 2 months. I feel that my heart and lungs can take the distance. The problem is my legs. I get aches and pains, not short of breath.
What kind of watch are you wearing? Is it good with keeping track of your exercises?
I wanna run to catch the bus 😂
That's a major incentive, that for me to learn to sprint at 55 years old and still sprinting for buses now at 63😀
@@tobyl996 wow lol
I’ve always been overweight and I’ve been trying to lose weight by running but I could only do 500 meters before I was to tired
After I watched this video I went for my usual run and took your advice and I ran my first ever mile run
Thank you so much I think I will actualy start to see some improvement now
I am so happy to read this!! Nice job!
I do orange theory and endurance days on the treadmill are tough. Thanks for the tips! 😌
Great informations
Also how do you get used to breathing during intense exercise? It's easy to get into heavy breathing and exhaust your body without realizing it
Coach holly having a great regards for you and all of efforts
Do make a video on sub 60min 10km that would be helpful for many runners ❤️
Great topic! I’m using similar methods as I try to stretch myself out and increase me weekly mileage. I find that body position is key especially up hill!
man, if I were running in sf, I'd run longer just by the beauty of the nature
I run 5 miles every morning 🌞 it's great
Great video, thanks coach !
Thanks Coach Holly!!! #TheRunExperience #CoachHolly 💯✔️💪🏼💪🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Great vid
Hi Holly
I always watch your videos and I’m going to try this. Thanks once again and I will let you know how it goes.
Peter Joseph please do! Love hearing the reports back.
I have to run the mile at school tomorrow and I’m tryna get a scholarship here so uh yeah I’ll come back to tell y’all how it goes 👍🏼
I have a big passion at running!
What’s brand? shoes do you use it for running
Thanks holly. Really enjoyed this video. I'm an awkward runner. This should help
Your talking is really effective and motivating ...... 🏃🚶🏃
Glad you think so! Thanks for the comment.
Great video Holly. Rainy day here in the Bay, but, after watching this, I’m gonna give it a try. Off to the gym
John012196 way to get after it!
Quarantine...i am *NOT* a good runner..i just wanna run longer so that i can flex on them boys at school..the *REALLY* annoying ones
One thing that always holds me back is the pain I get in my shins. I’ve only just got back into running for like 3 days but it hurts when I run. I’m guessing it’s just because my muscles in that area are very weak.
You’ll get used to it I think it happens when you haven’t ran in awhile and aren’t used to it maybe also stretch your legs
my only problem when i run is that i have exercise induced asthma. i can run just fine and keep going but i start to wheeze.
Savanah Bryan That sucks
Have ur handy dandy asthma puffer I take it on my runs it gives me another 3 km before I completely die
I used to need an inhaler whenever I ran, but running helped me not need one at all anymore. Mine was really mild, so this will not work for everyone, but it you have mild exercise induced asthma, it does get better if you keep at it.
Take at least 3 be puffs before going to run
There are breathing exercises on TH-cam
@@oliviamcgie5861 I'm gonna ask my doctor about that. I'm off my maintenance now, and wanted to get stronger so I just ran, didn't think of consulting first. That was so wrong.
I just ran 4 miles. Now its time to get ready for work😂
Are nostrel expanders any good or a joke ? I need air and my nostrels has a tendency to collapse and close off.
