My favorite Nirvana album, I like them all, but this one was love at first listen, I love all the songs, I hope you react to the whole album, it's really great
My favorite album of theirs. They've got a pretty flawless discography so you'll be good wherever you start. One of the few bands where even their non-album songs and unreleased material is as great as their albums. In my mind, the only other band with a comparable output is The Kinks circa late 1960s
I think that line I tried hard to have a father but instead I had a dad is a reverse play on words with a bit of tongue in cheek sarcasm. After his parents split Kurt spent a lot of time with his grandparents. When I heard that line when I was 13 years old I knew exactly what he was getting at as I was in the very same situation.
This album was one of the first tapes I bought, along with Offspring's "Smash" (bought both on the same day). I love that line "I tried hard to have a father, but instead I had a dad." As someone who didn't have a perfect dad, it made it more relatable.
So satisfying to finally see a Nirvana reaction. Glad to see that you haven't gone with something obvious from 'Nevermind', instead diving straight into their best album. People may not like the Grunge sound, but along with many other bands too numerous to mention, they saved rock and roll before the advent of the dreaded Nu Metal scene. I sincerely hope that this isn't just a one off Justin, as there's a plethora of great stuff out there! 👍
This was interesting and worth the listen. I never got past Nevermind with Nirvana, which I actually liked quite a lot, though it was never something I listened to a lot. I always felt I should've at least listened to the other disks. This was about what I would expect, it's got that gritty Nirvana sound, and it does have some depth and power, though I agree not to the level of the hits I know, at least on a first listen. I'd definitely be interested to hear more of this.
Thank you, thank you , thank you Justin for starting In Utero, which I haven’t seen any reactors do. Not only is it Nirvana’s best album, but one of the best albums ever made IMHO. So glad you do lyrics as well, it’s a bruising, discordant, beautiful masterpiece
Had A Dad was a song by Jane’s Addiction. There doesn’t seem to be an influence on Cobain’s lyrics there, but I always think of it. This has to be my favorite album by them, they went heavy as a response to their success instead of another way.
Awhile back I saw a video on Kurt’s pedals and guitars… I bought a pawnshop special, a Univox Hi-Flier phase IV years ago… also found out he used a Sans Amp classic as a distortion with a Boss pedal of some kind. I have had a Sans Amp GT2, which is similar to the classic, close enough for me. Anyway, never put them together, probably should someday in honor of the K and N. Great choice.
I can see you’ve delved into some grunge. Bleach and In Utero are great albums. NeverMind I’ve played way too much. Musically those 2 albums are more interesting, and more honest. But, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots are way tighter and fantastic Musicians. Nirvana is like the more accessible part of Grunge.
I have to disagree. Nirvana are the closest to the true spirit. That can't be said of the smoother sounds of the bands you mention. Although not necessarily in sound, Nirvana are closer to acts such as Mudhoney, Tad, Butthole Surfers ad infinitum!
@@Owlstretchingtime78 with a rawer a sound I should’ve said. Not to say theyre shit just compared to their peers they werent as musically talented as some of the other grunge acts. And yeah of course their raw they were influenced by Husker Du, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney who are all great bands in their Own right. PS- they ripped off a lot of bands too. And just made it their own music.
Glancing through the comments, I see a lot of love for this album, but I'm going to give a contrary opinion. Yes, there are some good songs, including this one, but there are also tracks that I would skip because they just sound too raw and un-melodic.
I can't even say they're my least favourite band, given that Nirvana is one of those bands I've never been remotely interested in and haven't even bothered to listen to (along with the whole grunge and Britpop scene).😉
Their first album was Bleach. Nevermind, the album you’re thinking of, was second.
R.I.P. to producer Steve Albini .
Ditto that 🙏
Maybe JP should react to Shannon Wright Out in the Sun.
Astonishing violent album produced, of course, by Mr Albini.

Great tortured guitar solo. Always liked this song

Their best album
My favorite album of theirs is whichever is playing at that time.
inconsistent
I love In Utero when it comes to mixing, it's more raw and genuine than nevermind.
Agreed. It's how they should sound.
I was in High School when it came out and the record sounded like how I felt most days.
@@John_Locke_108I was 28, but i knew they were the anti-fakers we so badly needed! 👍
One of my favorite songs. Loved your review!

Rock and roll for what it's worth....!🙄
I dunno about grunge saving rock 'n roll, but we agree on the scourge of Nu Metal.

Cobain may not be a "great" guitarist in a traditional sense but i absolutely love his work throughout this whole album, it's perfectly...wrong!

Speaking of Jane's Addiction JP, you started their album Nothing's Shocking, and only got two tracks in..... maybe time for a revisit eh 🤔
@jfergs.3302 He doesn't know it of course, but it's a no brainer.
This album blew by mind when it came out. It's a masterpiece and better than Nevermind in my opinion.
This is the band in their element!

I tried hard to have a father
But instead I had a dad..
Anybody can be a Dad but it takes a true man to be a father.
I always thought for the longest time it was “I tried hard to have a father, but I still don’t have a dad”
Bleach was their first and IMOHO their best.❤
Nirvana were never quite my thing, being a young metal fan at the time. I did however end up busking Come As You Are, which made me a few quid. 🙃
May I recommend Route 101 with Herp Alpert. Super sound.

Yes, but there are many worse.
They are better than Sex pistols, by example.
Every band is better than Sex Pistols...even Red Hot Chilly Peppers
