Many-many years ago Valentino Rossi walked into Casey Stoner's garage with a helmet on to explain himself about their fracas on track. Although it didn't escalate over some words exchanged (with one of the most memorable, most gentlemanly burns ever produced in motorsports - i.e. "Your ambition outhweighed your talent."), I thought it looked REALLY bad visually.

You are right…. What you may find, if you aren’t an American or a big nascar follower, that most nascar fans and nascar itself actually encourages this sort of extra curricular behavior. There is almost nothing a driver isn’t allowed to do in order to “get the win”.
What started out as elbows out, aggressive racing. That was rubbing is racing that america and nascar is known for -- spiraled out of control that Nascar all but condones violence and allows their drivers to do whatever they what with their vehicles short of yellow flag dive bombs. They have manipulate the completion to the extent that it helps creat some of these on track controversies that they subsequently “refuse” to get in the middle of.
They want the drama because nascar is more entertainment than it is fair play and sport.
