If you don't want to work on contract and have to find new jobs regularly, yes, keep your day job. The writers you love at cracked went out and found new gigs and lots of them are doing great. Dan O'Brien is writing for John Oliver now. If you want to be a professional writer, YOU CAN DO THE THING. I believe in you.

Don't let whatever they went through happen to you, man. If you really want to do it, you Should do it. If you're good at it, the risk is worth it. Trust me, I'm a "wannabee" writer myself, and I refuse to believe that it'll never happen. As soon as you accept that, you're done. Stay true to your course, my friend, and land shall eventually show its beautiful face. I believe in you, and so should you.

The Cracked video team are some of the loveliest humans I've ever met. I met them at a con and had them sign the After Hours poster they used to sell in their merch store. And they were the same engaging, friendly geeks that they are in their videos in real life. Jack even made special arrangements for me to meet up with them because DOB hadn't been able to stay for the meet and greet.
I didn't expect them to show up, but they did and they talked with my friend and I in a nearly empty auditorium for almost an hour.
They were at the same convention the next year and not only did they remember me, but Soren paid for my lemonade when we all wound up in line at the same drink stand. (I waved at them, but gave them space because I didn't want to be a weird stalker fan girl) Katie initiated conversation with me and said they remembered me from the year before. Just super nice people.

I still rewatch them, and even the Off-Hours stuff from Small Beans, But, my understanding is that After Hours was _remarkably_ expensive to produce. Shooting was a pain because it was on-site but throughout the night. Writing one episode was roughly like writing 4 articles, or at least a couple long ones. The animation and collecting clips required a lot post-shoot time.

Whenever a company invests in any sort of company that is successful primarely because of creativity, even if it is just a company of one, they should always allow them to retain complete creative control, as that shall generally allow the invested in company to make the most money both for themselves and the company that invested in them. There are exceptions of coarse, but unless the invested in company is actually starting to decline in profits by any degree more severe than slightly, the directly corresponding investor should typically allow them to keep doing their own thing.

Their main page decided to get political years ago, and then it just became more flagrant as time went on. If people had been going there for political content, it would have been fine. But essentially most people were visiting for interesting and humorous lists, and didn't want anything to do with politics. And even when they weren't posting political articles or videos, a great deal of their content (i.e. entertainment-related) started to come across as snobbish and smug, which only pissed people off more. So it was basically a combination of terrible writing and being unable to gauge the temperature of their audience, among other things.

There was even a video of them defending Antifa and they actually tried to pass it as news, they made a VERY specific research of the fights Antifa didn't start and tried to paint the whole situation as if every Antifa member was innocent and everyone else was a literal nazi. They went so overboard against Trump that they lost their journalistic integrity.

Stephen S you nailed it. I used to watch/read Cracked daily for the humor. Then they got political. Boring repetition of all the usual left wing tripe other sites were doing. There were a few exceptions, with a surprisingly good articles thrown in with the garbage. Then they started banning commenting on the articles and posts unless you paid for a membership, which is where more than a few comedic gems came from. A few weeks ago I went on to the site to see what was new since it had been about a year since I had read it. Nothing but biased SJW articles and spin. Haven't gone back.

It's worth noting that it isn't all about strategy and tactics - Cracked's comedy content was always consistently good-to-great. The writers, going all the way back into when the lists started, were often brilliant - from Jack O'Brien himself and David Wong to Seanbaby, John Cheese, Luke McKinney, Josh Sargent and Dan O'Brien (no relation) - and the ability to find and employ good writers continued until JOB left. I personally believe that Demand Media were simply too tactical and had/have too little understanding of the importance of quality. To them, like many other media companies, content is content, and is only measured in words or seconds - to them, it's a pile of nondescript ressource, like gravel on a flatbed truck, and all they focus on is where to unload it.

The thing about After Hours, though, is the show was going to end anyway. At least 3 of the 4 cast members were already intending to leave Cracked, and the attempt to introduce a new cast didn't find an audience. Apparently they'd filmed a series finale that never finished editing when the plug was pulled. And with Daniel O'Brien leaving, that meant his other main show, OPCD, was going to end as well. But now they've started producing content with new people again, with their first show since the comeback being a blatant ripoff of OPCD.

For me, as someone who was a loyal subscriber, when they stopped publishing the videos I wanted to see such as those named above, and started doing a really bad news program, and began letting go most of the people in those popular properties, that's when I pretty much stopped watching and unsubscribed to them. It would be nice, if the core of the the people who made that Channel popular got together, and started ripping off their own content. Slightly changing the names to avoid copyright infringement. Most of their skits would be very easy to reproduce and wouldn't take much of a budget.

I'd argue that the biggest issue was a drop in quality content and becoming much like Buzzfeed. Reading Cracked articles was like being told about history, science and other interesting tidbits at a table by that friend who can make anything funny in short and simple snippets. And the videos followed suit. After Hours was the perfect embodiment of what Cracked was. But then sometime in 2014 or 2015 a lot of the guys like Swaim seemed to take a backseat to guest writers who came off like Buzzfeed rejects. Not to mention that cartoonist who seemed to cover 80% of his panels with dialogue and presented his opinions as bonafide fact with the only basis being "I'm the cartoonist so I'm right". Articles we'rent humerous historical tales or putting a dark twist on why babies cry so damn much, they were preachy "you have to agree with me or you're a bigot" style clickbait. Or even worse were the "I was in a cult where we ate cow anuses off the coast of Peru" investigation type articles that were poorly researched and pointless. It felt like Cracked wanted to be both Buzzfeed and Vice and sacrificed what made them unique in the first place. They quickly hopped on a soapbox and just seemed arrogant about everything. Not to mention they stopped vetting their sources or citing anything and seemed to just expect you to agree with their content because. I remember one article where O'Brien explained how the news skews facts by falsely associating separate events such as "man killed at GTAIV release" to make you think they're related, even if they had nothing to do with it. Then here comes Sargeant doing just that a few years later. I think Gamegate was the biggest turning point. All the issues with dissenters being banned and daily online feuds between Sargeant and everyone else because of his attitude exploded with Gamergate. People were fed up and got tired of the humor and satire being pushed away for terrible preachy content by self-important randos.
