I really appreciate your husband's willingness to provide his perspective -- very thoughtful. The initial signs of dementia can be so subtle! The story of the vacuum cleaner was poignant -- and my guess is, your MIL didn't use it because she no longer knew how to turn it on. Rather than admit it, she preferred to pick bits off the carpet by hand. In my case, my father, who was a classical pianist, declared he no longer liked music. It was "too loud." It turns out he could no longer read music, and the only pieces he played were those he had memorized. Eventually, his brain could no longer tell his hands how to move and he stopped being able to play the piano at all.
Thank you for sharing your experience with your father. It is so hard to watch them being robbed of the things they loved and heartbreaking that they will not, or unable to express the truth. 💔
I just love the interaction between you two, what a dynamic combination! And the compassion that you both expressed, helping them feel as independent and loved as possible. And watching you laugh together...😊
Wow...the check book is exactly where I am with Sarah right now. Mom is having difficulty writing her checks. Thank you so much for sharing this. Many of us feel like we're alone. Another challenge is taking on the adult and child identity with caring for an elderly parent.
Yes, it is a delicate dance when you need to step in to help those who do not think they need the help. I appreciate you watching and sharing your story. 💕
Vicki, this was an amazing interview. I could feel the complicity between both of you. You husband sounds like a great man. The light bulbs story and not wanting to be a burden still get me.
We never want to be a burden, that's why you ask your children for help when the first lightbulb goes out. 😉I told MIL, no child will think you are being a burden if you ask for help.
Wow! This was fantastic! This isn’t something I’ve ever had to go through as a child but watched my mom go through similar things with my grandmother. You two nailed this interview! Great job! My grandma did the same thing with the vacuum thing. It wasn’t wrapped in plastic but it was buried under so much stuff that there’s no way she’d used it in a long time. She was very angry when my mom “had her license taken from her” and then even more angry when she was placed into a care facility because she was aggressive and they couldn’t find in home care willing to care for her and she had declined so much that she needed 1:1, 24 hour care. I really enjoyed this video.
Thank you for sharing your Mom's experience with her Mom. It really helps people to see they are not alone on the crazy road. Thanks for the kind comments, I will save them to convince him to do more 😀
@ I think he boost your channel. This is like the best video for me yet. I can see a podcast omg. I love how you too just blend together with these stories
The fear is real on both sides. They fear change so much. It’s a leap into the unknown that they just can’t ready themselves for. ❤ It’s scary for caregivers too
@PinkandPossible Thank you for watching and for your comment. We also discovered my in-laws feared being locked away in a state hospital because that is what happened to their relatives. That's where their memories live, in the past with archaic medical practices. 😢
@@AgingOnYourTerms goodness. I wonder sometimes if that’s where my mom is too. Being sent away to a facility and forgotten. Thank you for the story about the hairspray. It really helped give everything a lighter moment.😂
Wow conversation brought another whole meaning of caregiving, the vacuum cleaner anecdote... Parenting the parents. I agree with Kim, you are a great wife and your couple is great exemple of good partnership.
Just watched you and Michael on TH-cam and was very impressed. I think you both addressed a lot of things that many will realize are signs and hopefully open up a lot of people's eyes sooner, rather than later. I'm so glad you're sharing your experiences and getting a more personal message out to others who are searching for answers. 😍👍🏻 Love, Gramma
That was awesome! Thank you Vicki and Michael for sharing your caregiving experiences. What a wonderful couple! I’ll be working on our 20 something old sons to watch your channel so they have some knowledge if this happens in our family!
Catching up on YT after a busy week and I'm glad this is the first video I've watched!!! Such a great interview, Vicki💕 You and AOYT Hubby are wonderful together (which I'm sure you two know🥰). Yes, a big thank you for sharing this story in 'real time', it's not easy sharing the hard things, deep gratitude❤❤
@starchyshauna Awww, Thank you so much 💖. He was initially nervous about doing it because he said he's not interesting. 😂 I'm hopeful it will help others. 🙏🏾
I went from being worried that I would have to job-hunt at 55, to being convinced by my husband to just stay home. I'm glad I listened to him, because it was the right decision.

This is AMAZING! I absolutely love this video. You are a professional interviewer and he is a wonderful guest!
@@Pickletrees Thank you! I am so glad he agreed to talk about it on camera. 😊
@ I think this is going to be a very valuable video in the near future. You don’t often hear the “son’s” point of view, or men talking about this.
Very true. I am glad he agreed to do this. 💕
I love how you took the blame for the person who told on them about the driving.
@@kimberlygibson3 Yep. Blame the daughter-in-law.
I love how he said that although you guys got their driver Licences revote, you took on the burden to drive them around.
I will share the picture of the shirt I got Michael to commemorate his second job as chauffeur. 😂
That line seems super fine because I know how much older people are about respect
Especially parents. It doesn't matter how old you are. You will always be their child.
@ yup
It's amazing that you were willing to dive in 100 for your in-laws. You're an amazing wife big congratulations to you. Your husband is lucky
FIL was just the sweetest person. And Michael made him a promise he couldn't keep on his own. I have no doubts that I did the right thing.
They needed 22 light bulbs? I need to hear this story!
And this is such a great interview! You two are so professional.
Thank you for watching and for the nice comments. I told that story around 4:17 in this video: th-cam.com/video/gknEkrEVDxw/w-d-xo.html
@AgingOnYourTerms 🤣 found it! Oh that's terrible! At least you can laugh about it now!
