The Southwest Australian Global Biodiversity Hotspot is very rich in diversity with over 7,000 plant species listed (more than half of those are endemic), however there are still many unlisted plants and it’s estimated that the total number of plant diversity could exceed 10,000. It is an honour to live in this region and I have shared some lovely scenes, for you to enjoy, in this video. You will also find out what Global Biodiversity Hotspots are, why they are important and what you can do in your area to help support biodiversity.
Here are some helpful links, mentioned in the video, for you to consider checking out:
Look up your local government's website for environmental education, events and to find out where ‘friends’ groups are in your area, or to start your own bushland ‘friends’ group.

It is very nice to meet you Karen. We live in on a rural property approximately 90 km east of Perth. Over the years we have watched bushland slowly receding and have come to the conclusion that it is, like you said, up to us, to do something about it. So some years ago we decided to list 40 acres of our property as a voluntary wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary is a boggy section under a rocky outcrop which is virgin bush, and in that 40 acres alone we have photographed well over 30 species of orchids, which in higher rainfall areas is not extraordinary but in our area is quite unusual for a private property. I mention this because some varieties of orchids are extremely sensitive and fragile, so that is an indication of the biodiversity in that area. This video is very informative and hopefully will encourage people to do a little to help curb the rapid erosion of our environment.

G'day, thanks for commenting. I'm so pleased to hear that you've turned 40 acres of your property into sanctuary, it must be so rewarding to explore and photograph the area and know that you have protected it for future generations. Thank you for doing so :). You must have a healthy patch of bushland there for all those orchids, how wonderful. I'm sure the orchid society would love to do a field trip out to your property, in fact, so would I :). Thank you for sharing. :)

@@LifeintheBush That can be arranged. As a matter of fact a couple of days ago I found a newly sprouted colony of hare orchids. Lots of them flowering in a little patch, which is a bit unusual. We have just had our first real rain so there will be lots of orchids coming into flower soon so let us know what you have in mind. Our email is in our ABOUT page.

What a wonderful biodiverse region. Do you see many carnivorous plants in your area? Here is a link to a video that has a section about Western Australia's carnivorous plants if you are interested. th-cam.com/video/ZQP8KTB6bBs/w-d-xo.html

Yes, there are carnivorous Drosera species in most of the bushland pockets around Perth. We call them Sundews as they look beautiful when the dew drops get caught on them in the mornings. Thanks for the link, I had a quick scroll through the video 😊. We also get a lot of the Christmas Spiders that they showed too 😁.
