    I know Frank Reynolds was criticized for "losing it" over the report that James Brady had died. I totally disagree and my admiration for Reynolds increased. He referred to Brady as Jim which tells me they were friends.

      Television is scripted, even in the news, that it is quite boring. But when something spontaneous happens on live television like with Frank Reynolds snapping at one of his assistants or producer, that was pure drama and great television.

    I was in 6th grade and we were on spring break. I was outside playing with friends (yes, kids actually played OUTSIDE back then, lol) and came into the house for lunch and saw it on TV. My grandmother, who was recovering from cataract surgery at the time, thought all the commotion on TV was actually the soap opera she watched daily and was complaining how they were adding all these characters she didn't know, lol. RIP grandma and President Reagan.

    I was in 1st grade, Sacred Heart School in Knoxville, TN. What I remember is my teacher getting the class lined up, after the principal came to the classroom door. We were lined up, walked to the Church, and we all knelt in the front pew before St Joseph; one of my classmates said a prayer. I remember a TV camera there; I saw us on TV later that night.

      ABC producers brought Ted Koppel in immediately to calm him down. What a masterful performance by Reynolds...a former Marine demanding the best from his team. When the word finally came in on a note brought by a timid staffer that Reagan had indeed been shot, Reynolds uttered "My God...the President was hit" just before screaming at the whispering staffer "SPEAK UP!!!" What a story and what a fantastic display of journalistic leadership. Dan Rather on CBS was the opposite...confused and halting. He spent half an hour trying to minimize the President's injuries in an effort, I suspect, to minimize the mistake for CBS even at one point saying the President "was grazed" with no knowledge whatsoever of the severity of Reagan's wounds.

    • @rwboa22
      @rwboa22 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't blame Frank Reynolds for losing his cool. Broadcast journalism in 1981 prided itself on getting the news right and as accurate as possible, getting both sides of the story as mandated by the FCC under the old Fairness Doctrine (despite its mandate mainly being aimed at local TV station news broadcasts). Nowadays, they just don't care, thus why I refer to so-called "mainstream media" as "TASS Amerika".

He shot at Regan to prove he was worthy of her love . Foster was questioned and in courts . She didn’t know Hinckley personally at all . A crazy fan who thought this is how he could impress and win the heart of Jodie Foster who was attending College at this time. She had some of the calls recorded.

    I remember this day. I was in a classroom in Dallas when the news came over the PA system. And all the kids cheered.
    Different times.

      @@PM-bv2nx - Texas was a blue state back then. Also, Texas always had a large immigrant population. My grandparents were immigrants in 1940.

    What i never thought about until the movie came out in 2001 I just watched was the Bushs were close friends with the Hinckleys , The Hinckleys and the Bushes have been friendly for decades, going back to the days when both families set down stakes in the dusty town of Midland, Texas. The Hinckleys were donors to Poppy Bush’s political campaigns over the years, and they gave to support the first, unsuccessful bid for Congress of the young George W. Bush, in 1978. The families lived close to each other, they socialized; I saw indications that, at one point, they may have shared the same lawyer,Here’s an amazing example: Bush Senior, known to family and friends as “Poppy,” claimed he could not remember where he was when he heard that President John F. Kennedy had been shot. I discovered a good reason why he should have remembered - because he, himself, had been in Dallas that morning.I also learned that Poppy Bush was a longtime acquaintance/friend of George de Mohrenschildt, the mysterious Russian “baron” who was perhaps the closest person to Lee Harvey Oswald in the year before Kennedy’s death. it was so clear the news paper ran it, what happened in the Whitehouse while he was in the hospital? I'm not sure if people know about this, the Secretary of State took control? who is fourth in line of succession after the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, and the President pro tempore of the Senate. Then he was looking for the nuclear football, which went missing, the phones were out, they looked for Reagan's wallet for his nuclear codes, and we almost fired nukes at Russia because we didn't have comms with NORAD and they just happened to run an incoming nuclear missile drill right after he was shot, which we had a hard time talking to the Soviets to find out if it was real, the Secretary of Defence put us at DEFON 3, this was a coup d'état power grab with some of the same names involved with JFK, and they almost pulled it off...the news papers really ran Bushs family close ties to Hinckleys they show it in the movie, they lied about everything , Reagan was not ok..he was clinging to life, the backfire was so bad Bush wouldn't take the 25th and take control when the president was really under anesthesia for days, the bullet was next to his heart, and it was an explosive shell that didn't explode , they desiced not to tell the doctors until the last minute , which they have to bring in a man in a bomb suit and a container to take the bullet out of the hospital. The FBI had Hinckley on a short watch list, which they never handed over to the Secret Service, The FBI was in charge of closing off the floor, but another man made it to the bed of Reagan when he was out cold, the FBI said "he worked there" but that was never proven or looked into or the man arrested, I just learned all this 2 days ago and I'm baffled by it all, Even more strangely, Neil Bush, son of the vice president, was scheduled to have dinner with Hinckley’s brother, Scott, the day after the shooting. th-cam.com/video/cXBZ2oU_Njo/w-d-xo.html that's the movie..so shocking..

      The fact they lowered the dosage of his meds so he could take a picture, which took 100 times to get a good picture , while they made Nancy prop up his head..is just sick and sad.
