4 years late on this reply but I just learned about these guys and I already loved Jimmy from Widespread before this. First time I heard him live I said his guitar felt like chocolate syrup.
This is probably one of the most important bands in the evolution of the current live music scene. Oteil went on to play in the Allman Brothers Band and is currently in Dead & Co, and Jimmy Herring played with Phil & Friends and The Dead before his current spot in Widespread Panic. But if you're here, you probably know that already😉
Once upon a time ago, ARU asked me to write the liner notes, band bios, press release, and sales sheet for their new album, "The Calling," which I did. Alas, due to contractual conflicts, it took several years for the album to be released. By that time, they didn't use my materials, nor did I get paid for my work. Oh well! A few years earlier, I also helped book them for WJCT's Jacksonville Jazz Festival. Here's the result. A freezing night at Mayport Naval Base but a hot gig!
Its One Of My Favorite Groups and slowly getting the Albums together into My Collection as Well as On You Tube.. Brilliant, Magic. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chris Tredwell Birmingham UK Aged 76 & 9 Months !!!!!!!!!!!!
I was there. There weren't many of us because this was an off-site event and there were performers at Metro Park -the main venue - at the same time. And it was *Cold*..wind was blowing right off the ocean. It was worth it. Who gets to plop their butt on the front row and see/hear this!
I saw this tour in San Diego at Brick by Brick, a small club off Morena Blvd. Having seen the version prior to this (1994, Perfect World Tour) and being a huge fan of Jeff Sipe I was, in my younger-self brain, saying "Huh, so can this guy play?" (referring to Sean O'Rourke) and was hugely surprised and we became friends. Today we're Facebook friends. RIP Kofi Burbridge, as well as Col. Bruce.
I was at this show. Someone mentioned it was offsite from the rest of the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. They had some shows offsite at Naval Air Station Mayport. Can’t tell from the video in, but right behind them was a huge navy destroyer or carrier.
Played with them in D.C. at The Bayou back when Bruce was jammin along. Hypnotic Clambake gave Armond a taste and the Sunset Clause was never signed. It's all good!
Great band. Found them only last year when I read Alex Skolnick listed Jimmy Herring as one of his favorite guitar players. The rest of the band is very good too!
I saw these guys at Arb Stock at Carleton College in Northfield, MN in the mid nineties and they killed it. We got to hang out with Oteil for a while afterward. Amazing. Jimmy Herring is a monster.
Peavey Classic 50 with the "Peavey" badge missing... Definitely a solid under the radar amp... Mine didn't seem to help me play like Jimmy Herring though unfortunately...
I love ARU, though I prefer them with the Col., but this is nice too. Just to say though, whoever wrote the description for this video makes it sound like Oteil had just joined the band or something. He was there from the beginning, along with Jimmy, Apt. Q-258, Matt Mundy, and Count M'Butu. Jeff Mosier of Blueground Undergrass played with them in '88-'89, as well as Charlie Williams. This was the last lineup, after Apt. Q-258 left, but Oteil was always there. Okay, Apt. Q-258 is Jeff Snipe, but that was how the Col. always referred to him.
Best Herring Solo of all time th-cam.com/video/lzxVxC5kLMQ/w-d-xo.html after this solo my friend said to me "the guitar player is GOD" and I just nodded, and we both were epic players

Very reminiscent of Terry Kath and CTA in many ways. How the hell does it happen that a guy discovers he can sing jazz vocals? Tone, timing and ingenuity is off the hook.
He's the Sun Ra of the South -- to this day he's a tremendous influence and mentor to uncounted great musicians including Oteil, jimmy, Derek Trucks, Dave Matthews, Jeff Sipe, and a young Hendrix emanation named 'Taz' -- it's worth watching everything you can find on youtube connected to him including clips from the documentary 'Basically Frightened'
ambassadorportal My guitar teacher 'ordered' me on to him 10 yrs. ago. I liked ARU just fine ("Mirrors of Embarrassment") then went another direction and now find he's mentor to the current hottest guys I'm digging...
This is dope! They sound like a jazz fusion Pearl Jam. Jimmy Herring is a monster!
Bro. That Herring solo on No Egos Underwater has floored me for years. UNREAL! 11:45
While ripping a cig. So sick.
Look up his solo album lifeboat it's sooooo good!
This is, without any doubt, the best band I'd never hear of until a few months ago...man, what i'd been missing. Jimmy Herring is phenomonal.
me too.
I've been calling him the most underrated guitarist on earth ....
Nothing against the other guys but To be fair Kofi may be the most musically talented on that stage.
Try some Widespread Panic
4 years late on this reply but I just learned about these guys and I already loved Jimmy from Widespread before this. First time I heard him live I said his guitar felt like chocolate syrup.
Man I love Jimmy Herring. Insane chops & his ideas are so musical. All of these musicians were firing on all cylinders.

The Q!
Yup. I go back to the Brandyhouse and the Variety Playhouse....danced hard!!!!! I love it
Don’t forget Kofi with Tedeschi Trucks. RIP

thank you for your service. I hope life has been well with you. Better days are before us and ahead is unknown.
What a wonderfully obscure, underrated band,
like Little Feat, Dixie Dregs & all the rest!

RIP Paul Henson and Kofi Burbridge :(
oh darn, i did't know....R.I.P.
Ah man, this saddens me :(
Didn't know about Paul.
The talent on that one single stage is greater than pretty much, greater anything that is happening today.
This singer was in a Chattanooga TN band called Kings of the Killerfish.....stand up people was done before Paul came to this group
With Shawn Perkinson. Band was awesome.
Living colour vibes are strong in the opener.(But, more jazz influnce, than metal.)
What a blast,great performance.
You KNOW the audience couldn't have been prepared for THAT!
Not only their performance, but it was also freezing that night with the wind chill.
I was there. There weren't many of us because this was an off-site event and there were performers at Metro Park -the main venue - at the same time. And it was *Cold*..wind was blowing right off the ocean. It was worth it. Who gets to plop their butt on the front row and see/hear this!
That must've been fun..I'd love to see them play with Col. Bruce,Jimmy and Oteil all together..
This is my favorite version of the band
God I love this band. Search Yourself is SICK.
I used to watch ARU back in Gainesville Fl. Oteil and Jimmy together are lethal. Best shows ever.

I love this stuff. I wish someone would post some of the old Frogwings stuff.....with Derek, and Edwin McCain. Badass.
Played with them in D.C. at The Bayou back when Bruce was jammin along. Hypnotic Clambake gave Armond a taste and the Sunset Clause was never signed. It's all good!
It's simply amazing Jimmy's solos
All the music you need right here!
This is magical. Thanks a lot for this.
Herring is a God!
When we were in school together in '84, we all knew he would go on to do great things.
One of the best bands!
Listen to Paul's voice, he sounds like jesco white. Which is pretty cool in my book! Great music
Great band. Found them only last year when I read Alex Skolnick listed Jimmy Herring as one of his favorite guitar players. The rest of the band is very good too!
You should check out Widespread Panic, Jimmy current band.
@@spreadneck2063 Oh believe me, I have

I saw these guys at Arb Stock at Carleton College in Northfield, MN in the mid nineties and they killed it. We got to hang out with Oteil for a while afterward. Amazing. Jimmy Herring is a monster.
I can't stop watching this...mind blowing.
My friends band covers stand up people & that's pretty much how I found out about them very tight
Oteil B. was in the movie “Being There”. he plays one of the “street punks” who confronts Chance..( Peter Sellers)
great audio quality! thanks for the history lesson.
The four thumbs down are lost and need to turn on their lovelight because they're basically frightened. ✌️
Dats good shit

He does resemble Geddy Lee🤣

Anyone else noticing similarities in the vocal phrasing with Warren Haynes in Govt Mule?

Did he just headbutt the bass In the middle of a bass solo? 🦄

Can anyone please tell me where I can purchase this??? I lost my copy and need to get it!
I don't think this show was officially released but you can get their CDs in mp3 on amazon
Yeah this was released at one point I remember buying it but thanks!
I haven't double-checked but go to abstractlogix.com. If that doesn't work, I can tell you how to download and save it.
No luck at that link. What's the best, virus free way of downloading it Robert? Thanks !
And saving it for sure.
Geddy Lee on drums doesn't suck
That's Shawn O'Rourke, not Geddy Lee.
Very reminiscent of Terry Kath and CTA in many ways. How the hell does it happen that a guy discovers he can sing jazz vocals? Tone, timing and ingenuity is off the hook.
what's the deal with col. bruce hampton?

Col. Bruce is a fully- realized bodhisattva
The singer ain't much to look at...but damn can that boy sing!
Twat!
They sound good! Not even remotely jazz though.....Jazz festivals aren't jazz anymore, so these cats fit right in.
Check Herring's solo that starts at 41:25 , asskickin'.
