@@philippusviridi6527 Well you are welcome to keep highly doubting, however he did in fact say that. No skin off my nose whatsoever, you keep highly doubting old son.
I sadly took him and Tull for granted back in the day. He surely is one of the best ever and from 1971-82 nobody could touch Tull live. Nobody. Very grateful I got to see them 5 times from 1971-75.
Barrie has always been one of my favorite drummers. Yes, he could play a great drum solo. but what he played during some of the songs was spectacular. Pretty much all of the drums on Songs From the Woods are killer. Then there's the double bass beat in Minstrel in the Gallery. Not extremely fast by todays standard, but what a feel. Thanks for sharing this with us, and paying tribute to a great drummer.
Do not compare Barrie to anyone. He was an incredible drummer. Rik Parnell was a good drummer. But I had never seen someone like Barrie. He was a killer. Nobody had played that instrument like Barriemore Barlow. Never in history. Nope. Never.
I just saw this video for the first time. I had an online discussion today with someone about Neil Peart, whom I saw 3 times. I think he's one of the greatest rock drummers ever. The only one I ever saw, that I thought was better, was Barrie Barlow, with Jethro Tull, 4/8/1977. There is another video on YT from that tour, with the same members, but this sure captures a lot of what I remember.
I saw BB when I was a kid. Capitol Center, many moons ago. At the time I was either Palmer or Peart , 2 greatest. Then I saw and heard Barlow and I was WTF? I could not believe how incredible. The good ole days
This man was truly ahead of his time. Fucking brilliant!! He's still alive, thankfully!! I must way that this solo bests probably most drum kit players of that time period including Mr. Peart. Many will say "FAUGH!!"and "SACRILEGE!!".... However the proof is here n this viddy, and it is sooo lovely.. 👍🏻 You totally kick ass, Mr. Barlow. ❤️🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 One of the best!!!
When I was a teenager I started going to concerts and seeing all sorts of great bands. But including Rush who I loved when most people hated them. Neil Peary was a beast! But then I saw Barrymore Barlow and said wow! There’s is a guy that I can put on a pedestal with Neil that I have seen! Never forget those Drum solos Barlow did! Amazing! I saw him with that Gillian fishing Hat he used to wear
While Bonham is my overall favorite for so many reasons, Barlow is one of, if not THE greatest techical drummer in Rock. I would put him and Peart in close comparison Stylistically
What a fan tastic angle! Finally a drum solo seen from the back! The best perspective obviously! I saw him on this tour... Barlow is in my top 5 list of drummers!
Conundrum is my favourite drum solo because of its composition, which is sublime and summed up Barlow as a musician first, (phenomenally gifted) drummer second.. This is Conundrum with knobs on, definitely more technically difficult. Maybe not as satisfying as a composition. I wonder if having Terry Bozzio on the tour prompted the extra added difficulty? Thanks for putting this up.
Really reminds me of Dave Lombardo. Always loved this solo. Thanks for this footage; I’d not seen it until now. Also this was the ultimate JT line up. The live album is easily the best live album ever released...nothing else comes close.
This is my favorite drum solo. And I recognized a lot. One of the reasons that I started my own career as (amateur) drummer. Incredible drumming, Barrie!
Wow....always loved Barriemore and Jethro of course, creative geniuses, what a great age for music these times were, I am 49 but was raised on this stuff....all my Uncles and Aunties, My Mom also listened to prog...49 years later this music still makes the hairs on my arms raise and my heart flutter !
I always knew Barrie from way back, from the early days of "Bursting Out",that he indeed was incredibly special. So,so underated but he will forever be one of my favourites ever! Even John Bohnam admired him greatly!
Saw him with Tull 4 times, all including his mega solos. At Capitol Center (RIP, located just outside DC), I sat in some higher seats off to the side of the stage (where I could watch him behind the huge speakers) just to observe him during a show on the Storm Watch tour. He was a show all on his own. So much respect - hard-working and massively talented; Great match for IA and co.! Listen to any Barlow-era Jethro Tull song (70-75 ish) . He doesn’t just keep the beat and add some flourishes like most drummers. He quite literally PLAYS THE MUSIC of each song. I just got Tull’s Broadsword and the Beast box set which has been remixed by Ian Anderson’s genius find in Steven Wilson. Wilson’s new mix makes the studio album sound like junk. Every instrument is so clear and concise, so Barlow’s play really stands out. If you’re a fan (Tull OR Barlow), I highly suggest getting ANY Tull music labeled “Steven Wilson stereo mix” (streaming services label as such!), and give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed.
I'm a drummer and usually don't even like drum solos or any solo on any instrument, but this is cool. Just the raw power is pretty amazing, it's like a machine.
Awesome ! Barriemore Barlow was really exceptional... Very fast drummer for those times.... but it was realy more than just speed, he had some sense of dynamics. A real pity he left Tull and then did only a handful of sessions... and stopped.I love his few performances on the first LP by Kerry Livgren from Kansas, in 1980. Thne he tried electronic drums, it seems, on Robert Plant's second solo album, Principles of Moments.... quite interesting too. and h eplays the drums on Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force (first LP) in 1984 but I don't like the way he sounds on it.
Thanks for posting this great solo! Reminds me of Phil Ehart with KANSAS during the „Original Six“ era! Sadly there is nearly no filmed footage (except Omaha, 1982) of this giant, but check out the double live CD TWO FOR THE SHOW and the drum solo after Miracles out of Nowhere, it‘s quite similar to BB here imho! TULL and KANSAS - two of the best bands ever!
this is the first time I've ever really given Jethro Tull a fair chance ... my mind is blown. this guy is one of my favorites now. right up there with Ozzy's original drummer and Gar Samuelson of Megadeth
Sadly John Glascock was ill for this tour. I remember seeing this tour in NYC and being so bummed out that John was not on stage. Having seen so many Tull concerts before in the 70's, the '79 tour was a bit flat and I attributed it to Glascock being ill. After this tour Barrie, John Evan and David Palmer all left the group. And athough I enjoyed Mark Craney, Dave Pegg & Eddie Jobson on "A", Tull was never the same again for me. That band of Barlow, Glascock, Barre & Evan in the mid to late 70's was the finest & tightest group of musicians Ian ever payed with.
While Bonham is my overall favorite drummer for so many reasons (style, sound, power, dynamics, technical ability, musicality, vision, insatiable groove and timing) Barrimore Barlow is one of, if not THE greatest technical drummer in rock. I would put him and Peart in close comparison of styles.
