Apple has won me back after 10 years of Android with this. It's insane to know that the hardware hasn't changed, they've just given the option to bypass the awful processing (sometimes it's good but almost always overdone) and that this was technically possible all along. They should just change the standard video mode, or at least a "natural" option in the camera app to Apple log with a baked in rec.709 lut (or even a selection of luts) without the processing and then made into a regular size video file.
I believe that Apple will give us that choice (natural option with H.265) with the next iPhone. Unfortunately, knowing Apple, it won't come to previous models.
@@mrlightwriterprobably on iPhone 20 for 2 decade anniversary. Same with 8k sensor just for action mode and better handling of details and making the file small and 4k only.
in my opinion the standard should be graded too for the right comparison! With my old 13 pro max I used to decrease brightness and contrast, adjust the white balance and saturation and the result was a lot better than the straight out standard video! I would say closer to log graded than standard that I've seen in this video!
Log is not a color space...a color profile includes a transfer function (like SLog3) + a color space (Sony uses S-Gamut). The log portion is controlling the gamma curve (which is a curve because its defined by a logarithmic function), which records the brightness information, which is why it's related to Dynamic Range (the brightest and darkest parts of the captured image). It is basically a way of compressing that luminance information. Apple Log is using the Rec.2020 Color Space combined with their own Transfer Function. The image looks "flat" and "washed out" because it is compressing the tonal range of the scene into the limited bit-depth of the video file in a specific, reversible way. It's basically just encoding and decoding. tldr - log affects luminance (brightness), color space affects chrominance (color).
Wow amazing. I love the S23 Ultra's video but the video on iPhone in Pro Res Log looks much better. This just shows that more resolution does not necessarily mean overall better video quality. Great work!!!
