it's also crazy how Colleen writes about how we should be asking "why men harm", but she also defended her son while he was being accused with sexual harassment against a minor... alot about these people just isn't right, and it's unfortunate that such an important story gets ruined by these bad promotions and BAD people.

Justin Baldoni, the director, is the one who talks about deconstructing toxic masculinity. He bought the rights to both movies. Colleen's books normalize toxic masculinity and misogyny so idk how this happened.
And the thing with her son is he texted a 14 yo girl asking for butt pics. She reported it to Colleen and Colleen blocked her and has never talked about it publicly

She and her husband did "a coordenated attack" on Justin Baldoni and it backfired on them.
Even the movie poster she produced ( her face and flowers), there isn't his name on it either as main actor.
They hijacked his film he produced and directed and she promotes it without mention him like the film was hers. He has been working with it since 2019 when he bought the rights of the book to make the film. Not professional and not respectful. Shame on them.

100% It was all very disgusting. I certainly did NOT appreciate how anyone but Baldoni promoted this movie. After seeing the different movie posters, I was even more furious. Also, excuse me but where you florals and grab your girlfriends and run out and see this movie?! Are you serious?! Myself and one of my friends have experienced domestic violence so it's not OUR idea of a fun, light girls night out! I never read the book and only knew it was about domestic violence because of all the talk about what a crappy author Colleen Hoover is. It's obviously, NOT a subject I want to read about for fun. Had I gone to see this just seeing most of the marketing, I'd have been very upset!

Justin Baldoni bought the rights to both books and he never wants to work with Blake or this cast ever again. Even Colleen sided with Blake to climb the Hollywood ladder. So, unless he sells his rights off, a sequel is highly unlikely. And good for him.

I knew from day dot! A trailer told me DV was involved and I said ooooh that's a tough subject... how are they going to parse it?
Not gonna lie the birth scene near the end made the movie for me. The dialogue was in a trailer but seeing it on screen was satisfying.
I think false expectations and bad advertising (didn't see anything except 1 trailer) can ruin the experience.
I had a good time, and I now have a new perspective. How the gaslighting and excuses work was a revelation for me. I definitely have WAAAAY more empathy for people in this situation, because the movie was able to show me, not tell me.

It feels like Blake (or her team) tried really hard to mimic Ryan's marketing strategies while misunderstanding why those strategies work for him. On the surface, integrating your liquor brand is fine; Ryan used multiple movies to promote Aviation Gin. But none of them dealt with domestic violence, which frequently goes hand-in-hand with alcoholism & substance abuse. Even if the abuser in the movie isn't an alcoholic, naming a cocktail after him is extremely tone deaf. We love watching silly joke interviews with Ryan bc they showcase the same charisma & style of comedy we expect to see in his films. But it's so uncomfortable & borderline uncanny to see him do it for a serious film that he's not even in! He's normally so on-point with marketing & promotion that it's surprising he'd even agree to do something like that. All of it feels oddly forced

    • @Nenernener123
      @Nenernener123 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

I think this is a case where people are nitpicking & often are not the ones who have experienced this. It’s still a film that helps show how people get in these relationships, but that isn’t EVERYTHING. Like how dare Blake say to get your girls together & enjoy this film! Sorry but it’s painfully ignorant & doesn’t help anyone. Just helps people not want to cover this in the future.

I honestly feel awful for Justin Baldoni. He clearly wanted to spread awareness about domestic violence, but Blake Lively and Colleen Hoover seem intent on pushing up the fashion and romantic love story aspects. Colleen Hoover was also a social worker before becoming a writer, and you'd think that it would make her more adept when writing about topical issues. She also saw no issues with a colouring book being published, only to sheepishly have it recalled.

While in the film, Lily raises Emmy on her own, with Ryle out of the picture, in the original novel, she allows him to coparent unsupervised with her, with her logic being that her own father abused her mother, but never Lily herself. The funny things is that it would have been effective marketing to have the main leads promote it differently but have one of them promote it as a dv story and the other as a rom com but leave easter eggs to the audience that it is coordinated and purposeful. It is clear that Blake was more focused on how she could promote things that would make her money after the film, while Baldoni was focused on the impact of the film.

For those of you who don't know, I'd like to share a few things about Colleen Hoover and this movie plus advertising. So, Colleen Hoover is a romance author, as we all know. She wrote It Ends With Us with the intention of writing a surviver of abuse, which is very noble and a praise worthy act. Until you start reading her other works where their is examples Of the love interests: stocking, manipulating, gas lighting, physically restraining, verbally abusing, infantilizing, objectifing, and controlling the female protagonist but Ryle is the only one that is viewed as being bad because THIS time it is, whereas every single other pair in Colleen Hoover books are soulmates and meant to be. Even Atlas, the guy that saves Lily from Ryle, displays abusive and controlling behaviour, but it's okay because he's not Ryle. Are we understanding this? Colleen Hoover writes Ryle in every single novel, but this time is bad because she said so.
And it follows into the marketing of this movie. If you have the knowledge of how Colleen Hoover writes her books, then it shouldn't be surprising that she wants to market this movie as a "cute romcom to bring your friends to and have cocktails later" because she doesn't understand the weight of what she wrote and what was put on screen because if it was any other book, she would market it the same way. This is the woman who shamelessly made a colouring book for It Ends With Us because of the popularity of the book. She is not above treating this as a light-hearted love story.

Last week me, my younger sister and my mom went to see It Ends with us in theaters, my mom read the book and loved it, my sister read it and hated it and I never even touched the book ever, but I heard it's controversial. So the day itself was already going great. We were in a luckier situation, because all three of us has media literacy and knew it's about DV. Let me tell you, as I was sitting in the chair as watched the movie, I literally felt like the movie is trying to convince me that this Ryle guy is actually good and the DV scenes actually made me angry cry, because they were raw and triggering (saying this as someone who was born in a toxic marriage). I personally thought the movie was okay, because if you set the cast and the drama aside, it's perfectly (unfortunately) at the middle between romantacising abuse and representing it from the fmc's POV. The biggest problem here is the cast, acting like this is a rom com, I heard little girls, 13-14 YEAR OLDS, discussing who should've Lily ended up with, like it's all Twilight again! THESE ARE KIDS! Stop the nonsense and treat DV as what it is, ABUSE.

I like how they portrayed Ryle . Hijacking the big moments , gaslighting the victim & making them think it's an accident. Love bombing, putting on the charm & being so attrntive right after the abuse that the victim starts questioning if they imagined it . That's also why it's difficult for the victim to make others believe. These people are so charismatic often in proffesions that gives a certain image of them that people just can't put together with an abuser .

This is her best book, it’s actually somewhat based off of experience and as a victim myself, somewhat realistic on why she didn’t leave? Kinda.. But oh my god, the way she promoted this, her other books, this weird romanticization of harm, and her own actions make me really deeply dislike her.

I think it says a lot that she hijacked a lot of the movie, like the styling, the marketing, the poster, and even the direction of some scenes, thinking she knew best and those are the the parts being criticized the most. And rightly so. But, hey... it has been a financial success, so she won't consider her mistakes or admit to anything. She will say it's all coming from haters.

But blake is just a basic white girl and it comes across in her interviews. She has not faced struggle or abuse it seems, and Im happy for her for that. But shes just a simple pretty girl living her happy life. I dont expect any depth from her. It really doesnt help that every decision in marketing has just been bad when it comes to this movie. One such is my daughter who went through all the stages with a nut-job boyfriend. Thank god we were able to support her against him and see him off, but it was a scary couple of years. From this review it seems that the Rile (sp?) character changes when in reality they don’t change. They can’t. They just eventually move onto the next victim. It doesn’t help that with regard to the film, it would be hard to see Blake Lively as a sweet girl when we now know she isn’t. Far from it.
