  • The Member who provided the previous Airfix railway related photo's, provided diorama pictures that include those builds. Some pictures are work in progress, while others are the finished dioramas of the fictional Airfix station of Oakham.
The coaches were original Rosebud Kitmaster kits. The interiors were cardboard aftermarket items produced by Peco.

Thank you for a great video. I was born in 1955 and as a young boy in the early 1960s I remember going shopping in our city centre on a Saturday morning and while my mum was looking at ladies clothes I used to look at Airfix model kits encluding the railway model station kits. They where in a see thru plastic bag with a piece of folded card stapled to the bag and with an illustration of the completed model on the card. These were all hanging on a revolving display stand. And this revolving display stand was situated not far from the ladies accessories. I think this was so mums could keep an eye on their children. And if I had been a good lad my mum would always buy me a model kit and I always chose a railway kit. I am not sure how much they cost in those days, but I guess something like 6d or 1 shilling, i am not sure of the real price, and how i wish I had a collection of Airfix railway kits now, unopened. Oh well, happy memories if nothing else. I do believe that Dapol re released these kits and you can still get them albeit at modern prices. Your models look amazing, again thank you for showing them. Well done sir. 👍🚂

Thank you for your comments. I shall pass them onto the builder of those kits.
The first Airfix kits I built came in 'Baggies' and were bought from FW Woolworths. They cost 2/6d. We're talking the mid to late 60's.

Airfix models were fairly basic, yet were a great start to model railway accessories, in an era when the hobby had an inexpensive entry level for young children.
I learned it was better to pre-paint the pieces BEFORE assembly, with good old fashioned humbrol paints.

Personally. I still use Humbrol paints. I'm to old to change now.

I’ve considered making either a diorama, or small layout using Dapol models myself, but not necessarily keeping them standard.
I already have a few such as the semi detached houses, but cladded in Slaters brick, and much finer detailed windows with some 3D printed components such as bay windows.
It made a refreshing change from scratch building models to prototype as I did many years ago.
Unfortunately I’ve had to temporarily pack everything away whilst we have some work done on the house.

Great to see the complete Airfix station accessories together as most of us would only use a few.. I'm guessing the biggest seller was the footbridge.

I've no idea why the builder did this. I can only assume that they didn't have a train set as a child.

As a kid i was always intrigued by the airfix railway kit range. Although not that freely available back in the 70s. Recently i acquired the rare powered van designed to power the kit locos. Sadly it was without its chassis

So sad that these models are no longer available,or very difficult to source, extremely well done,

Be of good cheer. When Airfix stopped producing these kits. They sold the tooling to Dapol. They're all still available from them (I've just checked their website).

Nice modelling. The Airfix Booking Hall is a tough model to get looking good and the modeller has definitely succeeded in this case. In future would it be possible to upload at a slightly higher resolution, just so we can appreciate the work in all its glory.

Sadly. I can only work with what I'm given. As I understand it. These pictures were previously Posted on a model related Forum, where the resolution was limited.

Fair enough. A bit like working with the pockmarked Dapol mouldings in soft recycled plastic compared to the crisp original vintage Airfix mouldings. I understand completely.
