    I had to pause the video at #1 and say that this 🇨🇦ian high school sewing teacher has enjoyed the incredibly positive and empowering experience that my students are having in my classroom when they sew their own face masks. They are so proud and they seem blown away that they can make something that is so purposeful and so cool looking. They love picking out their fabric and seeing the face mask take shape as they follow the steps to make it. Best of all they love walking out of the classroom proudly wearing their new face mask as they head to the bus loop to catch their school bus home.

    Great video. Just one side note - the shampoo bar is not pronounced so-lee-du, it's pronounced with short i (like solid) and accent on du. And as a Lithuanian I'm happy to see a big sustainability youtuber like you promoting product made in our country :D I don't want to be an advertiser but if you are ever in a market for sustainable natural cosmetics or makeup, I can recommend another Lithuanian brand called uogauoga, I love their products.

    About the period cramps: Have you seen a doctor about your extreme cramps to make sure nothing is wrong with your reproductove system, or to make sure you dont have endometriosis? Cramps are normal but cramps so bad you cant walk can be symptoms of something being wrong.

    • @olibob8
      @olibob8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I have them. Doctor says that’s just how my body works. Sometimes there’s no reason.

    • @diloramukhtorova626

      @@olibob8 I agree with Lis Albers.There is always a reason. Your body is trying to tell you something. You should see a better doctor or do your own research to find the answers.

    • @MissIndependentFCB
      @MissIndependentFCB 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@olibob8 Extremely painful cramps or extreme period pain are never normal and there is always a reason for that. In my case, I can't get out of the bed the day I get my period and I feel like my whole body is just falling apart, but my doctors always told me "it is what it is/that's perfectly normal" and to just take painkillers, and then I found out I have ovarian fibroma. Change your doctor.

    • @arwenphillips9462
      @arwenphillips9462 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I.... didn’t know that. My periods get worse the older I get and it never dawned on me. My mother and grandmother had endometriosis so extremely painful periods were always a normal and something I heard about.

    • @PheOfTheFae
      @PheOfTheFae 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I was going to comment about this, too. Also with a side note: I participated in a study about endometriosis and told them this part, and they said that they had heard other such comments (tho that wasn't what they were studying), so it might not just be me. I got diagnosed with a bunch of food allergies a few years back, and when I started eating the allergy-safe diet (previously I had been vegan, cannot be anymore due to how restrictive the allergy diet is), my endo pain ratcheted WAY down. Way, way, way down. My theory is that since soy was one of my allergens and it can effect your hormones to boot, maybe that was the culprit, since I ate a fair amount since soy was my favored dairy replacement before. But I don't know for sure. But either way, it's WILD what diet can effect!

    When our kids were growing up, our entire neighborhood would do fireworks on July 4th and New Year’s. We would pace our kids on doing small fireworks in the early evening, and then sit outside and watch others that bought the big stuff. It wasn’t perfect low waste but it was sooo much less resources and money than our neighbors spent. Now we live in the woods, so no fireworks, but our grown children come over for games and an evening of cooking hotdogs and marshmallows around the fire pit. We never miss the fireworks.

    Fire works: Consider video game alternatives, there’s online articles about the best video game Fire work displays. Also if you have VR maybe paint or art some digital fire works. Light shows are a great alternative. If you simply must have fire works go to a large show, then the fireworks are shared and the number is reduced and shared with a crowd.

    On fireworks...a lot of cities will have community fireworks shows (especially in the US on the 4th of July) - encouraging and supporting this would be a great way to reduce the amount of personal fireworks that people purchase and use. Also laser graphics/digital light shows are becoming a thing too!

    For fireworks, we used to just buy different metal salts (found at hardware stores) and dash pinches into the fire pit to make different colors. We'd crack open old expired fireworks & do the same thing. Kind of like that old show 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?'. Then just recycled what we could of the packaging. It was pretty awesome & kind of bonding to just be talking around the fire pit at night, watching the sky, eating s'mores, throwing sparkley stuff in the flames...good times!

    Hi Gittemary! Thank you for the videos, your passion really comes across and is addictive! I have adopted many of your recommendations (glass jars, cotton bags, safety razor etc etc.) but even so, I feel like I'm creating too much plastic waste and feel bad about it... I'm a vegan and when I buy products like tofu or hummous it always comes in plastic. For things like pasta there are no zero waste shops in my area so even that I have to buy from supermarket (in plastic). There's a market closeby but it closes early (I work a 9to6 job) so I have no chance of buying local produce. Because I work so much I also dont have time to make my own produce (like hummous) You get the idea, society makes it difficult for me to avoid plastic completely and I feel helpless when I have to carry a huge bag of plastic trash to the recycling bin, once a week, knowing most of it wont be recycled and not knowing where that trash will end up.

    I would also recommend Modibodi as an alternative to Thinx, especially if you're in Australia or New Zealand. They have even more heavy duty underwear than Thinx that will absorb many tampons worth without getting slightly wet, so it's fantastic if you are really, really heavy or have a bleeding disorder.

      leafshave.com/collections/shop-all you should check out this razor. Its reusable and sustainable. Also its like a regular razor not like the scary safety razors :) its a bit on the more expensive side but has a life warranty so all you need is to just vut one for the rest of your life. I think you should trybit out if its with in your budget.

    You can get a portable bidet that's basically just a soft plastic bottle with a tube. So no battery needed either. It works fine.

    My favourite discovery this year was the german brand puremetics. Everything is packaged in paper and the shampoo/shower gels come in powder form. It‘s finally a natural brand that my sensitive skin likes too. I also had one very bad attempt at trying dental tabs in 2020. I like the idea and all but the feeling of biting down on them and the taste are just unbearable for me.

      Hi Anna,
      I’m using toothpaste from a brand called “Ben & Anna”. It comes in a glass jar (looks amazing and can be reused) and the texture is just like regular toothpaste. You get an wooden spatula with every jar, to put the toothpaste on your toothbrush. I’m living in Germany, it’s available in Many stores and online :)

      @@laurac5800 thanks for the recommendation! I have tried that one in the past (I‘m in Austria and the brand is pretty popular here too😃). I still wasn‘t really convinced and didn’t repurchase it, because I always felt like it leaves a film on my teeth... Otherwise it’s a great brand! I love their deo sticks and such. I‘m just very picky with toothpaste😂

    There is always that one jar that is better than the rest. For all those living in America, definitely try Adams Peanut Butter and re-use those jars. The lids are super aesthetic and the shape is perfect for anything. I just made some sauerkraut in mine. The PB is also just amazing!

    For fireworks:
    And this isn't zero waste but go to a fireworks show, theyre usually free and prettier than regular fireworks anyway. You'll probably spend less $$ on the drive there than actually buying fireworks yourself depending on where you live

    • @TheMyCave
      @TheMyCave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Have had my Hemp-case from Pela almost four years now off course on a second hand iphone. But when it comes to composting it one day, I am not sure how? I live in Norway where we compost food waste which go to a place where it is made into biogas. Would that be the way? Or could I bury it in my garden? No sure about which temp. it needs to degrade.
      Mayby someone knows 😉

    In germany we are not allowed to wear fabric masks anymore, we have to use those medical masks and FPP2 if we enter any sort of public place. Sadly, there´s so much waste caused by that and they are everywhere lying on the streets :(
    But I hope I can try to swap out some of the other things you showed in this video :)

  • @fignewton0000
    @fignewton0000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Omg I know exactly how you feel about jars. Also for fireworks I'd like to say it was invented not as a source of entertainment but rather a means of communicating that there's an emergency. I have a quick question about bidets as well: don't you still have to use toilet paper to wipe away the water?

    I would love a pela phone case but they don’t have a screen cover. And it’s more wasteful to replace a broken phone than a non plant based case. Maybe in the future they will come out with a more protective case.
