As a disabled person, I'm grateful for the encouragement to not be perfect. Because I cannot fully take care of myself, sometimes I am fed animal products. I personally try to be vegan as much as I can and when I care for myself I usually am, but being vegan all the time or the most sustainable in other areas all the time is just not reality or a possibility for me. So, thank you.

No one can live completely zero waste in a society not designed for it 👏 Well said! Very insightful. I deffinetly think I've been so discouraged with how overwhelming the zero waste community can be initially. I felt like I had to be perfectly zero waste, or nothing, I failed. Everyone's situation is different, we can all make impactful changes in our lives and evolve in our low waste living.

First of all, I am very grateful to the TH-cam algorithm that has introduced me to your videos. :D I have started my zero-waste journey in September of last year. I have been vegan for almost 5 and half years and started reading about the other effects and consequences of hyper-consumerism . Then I started phasing out fast fashion and reducing waste. Boy, it was tough! The clothing aspect not so much, since we have a lot of online second-hand stores and a lot of small brand designers, that are quite affordable. But, waste is a completely different story. I come from Serbia, where everything is packed in plastic and you have a plastic bag full of plastic bags in every household :D So, going zero waste here is a whole different level, because people will look at you suspiciously if you take your own bags to the market or you refuse to use a straw. And I felt so strange and awkward just asking whether something can be put into my container (sometimes, I still do). Also, our recycling system and waste management in general is a disaster. We even do not know whether the stuff we throw in the recycling bin is actually recycled.
Recently, I have started ordering online from small producers and everything is packed in plastic bags, so I try to reuse them, instead of loosing my mind over them. I see it like a two ways street. Yes, there is some waste, but I am supporting a small local business and farmers and getting fresh healthy food, so the pluses are bigger then minuses.
Also, I have tried in the past months to eradicate the exotic ingredients from my diet (like bananas, dates, chocolate...) and to focus on more locally produced ingredients, but this is also almost impossible mission. :D So, I just go with the flow. Sometimes I am making compromises, because it is important not to loose your common sense in this. As you have mentioned it several times, it is not possible to go zero-waste in a world that is not designed and you should be able to enjoy your enjoy, not have anxiety attacks each time you come in contact with plastic. :D
Boy, this was a long comment :D I just wish to say thank you million times! :D

When I first started I also felt really bad for having waste/plastic, but most things are not packaged sustainably, and not many package-free alternatives. Now I am content that I am doing my best most of the time, starting small projects for myself to improve different aspects of my living to be more sustainable.

The responsibility really needs to begin shifting to corporations. There is absolutely no reason that cheese needs each slice to be wrapped in plastic or my bread needs not only an outside plastic wrap but an inside one too. There is only so much the individual can do. It’s outrageous.

I love this. I was lucky to grow up more sustainable than the average child (was allowed be vegetarian at 10, never bought a ton of new clothes, limit my waste as much as I can, am allowed to grow food at home as a 17 year old, have always gone to green schools/fairtrade schools). Incredibly privileged to have the opportunity but yeah, I love seeing other people’s journeys into the awesome lifestyle I fell into.

In my high school and early adult years, I had a serious clothing habit. And as I got jobs and my own money, it was even worse. I felt like I needed to have different clothes and shoes all the time because it made me feel better about myself.

Such an inspiring and important story, thank you so much for sharing your journey! :) some parts really reminded me of my own life, e.g. growing up in a family that doesn’t have a lot of money but then ending up buying fast fashion as soon as I had some money. I think in my case it was more the fact that I finally could decide what I want to wear instead of having to wear my cousin’s old clothes than the fact that I was into fashion (for sure I was far away from being a fashion blogger, remembering all the weird stuff I was wearing lol). And it’s great to hear that even a role model for sustainability, like you are for your followers, started like this. Like you said: no one is perfect, and focusing on perfection all the time is pretty toxic. I’m still working on my sustainability journey but what I can say is that even stopping to buy fast fashion and starting a vegan diet as a first step into sustainability already feels amazing! :)

I’ve watched your videos for probably about a year now. And hearing you talk about being so irritated by “surprise plastic” and having that weight of perfection.... This is where I am currently. I would love to hear more about overcoming that feeling! Ways to cope or accept when others around you consume differently, how to focus on areas YOU can control, and how to use “mental” energy in a way that doesn’t exhaust you when it comes to trying to be better aligned with a zero waste life!!!

I love this video! You are an amazing person and thank you for making it.
I just read “Klimaguiden” (a Danish guide to reduce your personal CO2 emissions) and they wrote that DTU has found that only 1 % of the CO2 emissions from food stems from the packaging. They also wrote about how 1,5 grams of plastic on a cucumber can extend the life from three days to two weeks and since food waste is so much worse than packaging (100 % waste vs. 1 % waste) it does not makes sense to be so anti-plastic as a lot of us has become. I would love some nuance on this in a future video perhaps, since I have never heard these arguments from anyone in the zero waste community. I know that there are so many other problems related to trash than just the CO2, but I have a hard time seeing a future where we can avoid packaging all together yet avoid food waste. I would really love a video on the future of zero waste. I feel like a lot of it is very focused on the “right now” and not so much on the systems that have to replace the current ones and how that would possibly look. I have so many thoughts about this (and no one I know care about this so I have to let it out here 😉) but I better stop so it does not get too long 😅

Your current approach is very realistic and forgiving, which makes total sense from your character growth story here. I hope you know, at least for me, but I’m sure for others also, that I did not have to go through the painful/ strict/ mentally unsustainable period of more sustainable living largely due to the teachings of your channel. Thank you!

Love the childhood insights. I was born and raised in Transylvania, Romania. When I got to know about the importance of removing single use stuff and recycling I cane to realise how eco friendly my grandparents lived. Partly because they didn't have much and would reuse a lot.
Now I have moved to the UK a few years ago and everytime I see herbs in plastic or all fruits and vegetables in plastic I am sad. Back in my hone country I have not seen this even in supermarkets. People don't like produce wrapped in plastic. Is normal to chose and feel all your fruits and vegetables before you buy them. We would use small plastic bags which is now slowly going away. I sincerely hope the UK will do it soon. Supermarkets look so much nicer without all the plastic. All the greenery and nicely aranged non packaged produce makes me so happy. And you enjoy the food more because you feel it and smell it before cooking and eating.
There is a petition now from Greenpeace, hopefully it will make an impact

I think I was driving them crazy and myself crazy! I am still conscious of trash and trying to manage reality of being more green but it helps to know it takes time. I think it all has to balance whether in the process/transition in being more environmentally friendly, trash conscious and the choices that’s all in us in how we live our lives in day to day manner. I remember being told to always turn off the lights when leaving a room, I do it automatically now. It's a great habit to have developed, especially considering I usually have a very hard time with habits. Also, do you have naturally red hair?? It's so beautiful.

I believe that each day is an opportunity to do better than the day before. Everyone makes mistakes. No one goes into this knowing everything. But we all need just to start and then we can grow.

I went vegan OVER NIGHT, almost 10 years ago, but my journey with waste has been the slowest little snail crawl. I love your ethos-- all that we can do is the best that we can, amidst a society not designed for a different kind of lifestyle. One day, we'll all get there!

Have you found it more difficult to be zero waste with the pandemic ? Everything so much more single use now then before because people don’t want the chance.

Growing up we always went thrifting for any of the stuff needed, it was completely normal for me. It was not until high school people really started judging where my clothing came from but to me it was fine. I still get most of my stuff 2nd hand.

I miss old-style landfill sites in the UK (ok, so the 'Household Recycling' centres are probably better for the environment and in general, but hey..) because when we were kids my dad would go to take something to the 'dump', and my brothers and I would come back with a car full of toys we'd 'found' and adopted. It was like a treasure site to me- but then again, I do tend to find treasure in other people's rubbish even to this day... I hate the throwing out of stuff that could be used by someone else, especially. It hurts me!

I remember going to the dump too. I miss those days. Dad and I found so much good stuff.

I'm really glad I got to zero waste/sustainable/vegan mindset early in life (I went vegan at 14, zero waste slowly still in transition at 17). Problem is that I can't really talk to most people my age about it.

In what ways do you repurpose/give new life to waste before resorting to disposing of or recycling it? Trying to reuse the waste that comes into my home, but I’m running out of ideas

I asked this myself some time ago and than I stumbled across something Rob Greenfield said.
It doesn't matter if we use it once or twenty times, singel-use cups/packaging will end up in landfill in the end. So we need to avoid trash as much as possible in first place.
For exampel I use old containers (without a lit) to sort stuff, but recycle other packaging as good as possible 🙏

I’m curious about what the tricks are in the zero waste community towards tape. When something is broken but can be mended by tape, what will you do? Most tape has plastic and sometimes paper tape isn’t an option so what is there for those situations? What is then something that you would use? I imagine tossing the item isn’t the best outcome either so I’m wondering what everyone’s opinion or tricks are 😇
