    I actually used to work for the insurance company that underwrote the “warranty” that CarMax sold to their customers. While some vehicles would have large claims, the vast majority of policies would never have a claim. People need to understand extended warranties are just insurance policies. And all that insurance policies are just a wager between the consumer and the insurance company. You are betting that something bad will happen to you, and the insurance company is betting that nothing will happen. The insurance company has the data to know that the “odds” are in their favor. So, just like when you go to Las Vegas, the house sets the odds and controls the bets. That is why insurance companies are so profitable.

    Just because the warranty didn't "pay-off" doesn't mean it wasn't a good idea. It could still crap out a transmission on a moment's notice and you'd be big time in the black on the warranty.

    • @ivanoffw
      @ivanoffw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That Ford truck is getting close to 100K miles, so the odds of the transmission needing to be replaced is high.

    • @KeithZim
      @KeithZim 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@ivanoffw This is not a joke. All of the quality has been designed out of American vehicles. I worked at the claycomo plant during the 3 valve days. They have these 10 foot pry bars and giant impact guns. When some important frame bolt cross threads they send in the "hey boys", 2 will hold the impact, 2 or 3 will use a bar to put leverage on that impact to force that bolt on. All while never stopping the line... I watched a kid stroke out in the heat. Rolled his body off to the side and started the line back up, then called the ambulance. My point is that: production is all that matters at Ford. Not quality and not lives. Just those numbers. At the time it was 54 units an hour.

    • @bosgaurus1
      @bosgaurus1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@KeithZim, wow! Compare that to a Toyota line. At Toyota EVERY worker has the right and obligation to stop the line for ANY imperfection they see. Management is then supposed to come to the worker, thank them for stopping the line, and then ask for the reason. They then figure out a fix, and apply the fix to the line so that the same issue does not happen again. They've stopped the line for something as simple as bolts and fasteners being discolored. They needed to know why and how many bolts were off color, and to make certain that they weren't compromised and weaker than they were supposed to be. Once the fix has been applied, the line is started again. For Toyota an as near to perfect product is what matters.
      Years ago workers complained about undercarriage work being hard on their backs. Toyota made up a committee of workers to find a solution. One of the workers suggested a rolling, twisting, leaning chair on a rail they could sit on and twist and turn the chair as needed to get the job done. Toyota had the system looked over and when it passed safety protocols, they gave the Go Ahead to apply the fix. Much fewer back complaints, happier workers, better production.

    I recently (well, 6 months ago) bought a Ford Fusion at CarMax and purchased the extended warranty because the car was 8 years old and as a 1st year model was known to have electrical and steering issues. CarMax has fixed every issue that I brought to their attention, for free, but now I am finding that the reason this car had such low mileage (approx. 3K/year) is that it does indeed have several electrical faults. I am not sure if CarMax can or will fix them, tho. The instrument panel lights get suddenly brighter or dimmer at random times...but still bright enough to drive. Several of the buttons on each side of the steering wheel stopped lighting up soon after I bought the car, making them nearly impossible to see/use at night. And sounding the horn causes the radio to momentarily " freak out ". I am guessing that the wiring in the steering wheel is frayed or too weak for the job, a design or assembly fault? Right now, I am living with these faults.

    If you upgrade to another Ford F250 that still has the same frontend sheet metal just pull the grill guard and all the radar components and put it on the new one. When I had two 69 Darts and the slant 6 one blew a head gasket and I didn't want deal with it I swapped the better front fender that had the right trim holes and closer green paint between the two. Both cars still had fenders and the guy who bought the dead one cheap to fix couldn't care less.

  • @scowell
    @scowell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I bought the XLT F250 PS new in May 2018... but I made sure to get the extended warranty and the Premium Service. One big problem is that (after the first DW visit with the aforementioned 'band-aid' damper replacement) the dealer is going to claim that the *tires* are the problem... and, of course, the DW is back... only at 80mph (we get to drive 85 sometimes in Texas). The main solution, of course, is the dual-damper kit that attaches to the front axle and the tie rod... still researching one of those that doesn't require a lift kit. Also, as you may know, these trucks need a 'disaster' kit that adds an extra filter between the CP4 pump and the rest of the high-pressure fuel system. My warranty's up in 2025 I think... I'll be installing one of those before then. Otherwise, love the truck... just wish Ford would do right by the death-wobbling.

    • @firstlast---
      @firstlast--- 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure there are no loose parts in the front end and then install caster bushings to increase the caster to about 5 degrees. Steering effort will be increased but your death wobble will be gone. A high quality steering stabilizer helps too. Tires can cause death wobble but it's not often the only cause

    I’d understand if you were pulling large machinery or the like.

    • @TheBrokenLife

      It's kind of a chicken vs. egg situation. Those vehicles don't exist in the US. When we had them, people didn't buy vehicles in that segment mostly because they never/rarely offered useful options like a 5000+lb towing capacity or quad cab in our market. The original Ranger/S-series trucks were discontinued 10+ years ago due to low sales volume and they only had a towing capacity of like 3000lbs, but cost almost as much as full size trucks to purchase. Most minivans/SUVs will tow as much, and some owners do, so there really isn't an appeal for a "kinda" truck.
      But... the new Ranger, being a much heavier vehicle than the "old" Ranger, is available with up to a 7500lb towing rating. But... once again, it's just as expensive as a full-size truck when you equip it to do so.
      Soooo... Chicken, egg, chicken, egg, and around and round we will go. The short answer is people here don't do it because we don't have vehicles that _will_ do it.

    I bought one extended warranty for $2k. I only had it in the shop once for a valve cover gasket replacement right after buying it, so they repaired it for free without the warranty involved. I haven't bought one on any vehicle since and I've never needed it. In the off chance I need a repair done that I can't do, I have an emergency fund. I'm ahead vs if I had bought warranties for each vehicle. Just my personal experience.

    I love it when you came to the realization that the $2500 warranty is not going to pay itself off. :) Hey though I'm sure you felt insured from disaster and that's ok too. I up-sized to a full sized truck a couple of years ago and it's my daily, and it is the most comfortable vehicle I've driven. It seems that about 10 years ago they decided that they could throw a bunch of comfort items into trucks and get their money back 5 fold, and that is definitely paying off for everyone.

    Once those Michelin tires get to 50% tread, they are worthless. I've worked in a tire shop for years and I have replaced hundreds and hundreds of them. You are better off getting a new complete set of a higher quality tire, get a all around alignment and you should be good to go. And if you have one shock leaking, the others won't be too far behind so might as well replace them all...

When I called Maxcare to file a claim they said too bad you have to get it approved first. So I am out the money for the repair. YOU MUST carry the Maxcare contract information with you and call their number and follow their process. Hopefully my loss is your gain.

    A lot of people have problems with the emissions system on newer diesel pickups. but I heard that if you drive a lot of highway miles (like you do) you will rarely encounter emission issues. Apparently new diesel trucks don't like tons of short trips. Like you would do on a kid and grocery hauler.

    I have not bought a car since 2008 but I have bought around 35 cars from dealers in my life, most were financed. ( over 65 total but the rest were cash from private sellers ) I have NEVER spent 5 hours in a dealership in all those times. It only took 2 hours to buy my house and sign all the paperwork. I paid cash for a SUV a few years ago at a buy here-pay here place, and even there it only took 30 minutes for everything. Luckily ? I am too poor to buy any vehicles anymore so I don't have to worry about it. My 2007 Elantra ( what I bought in 2008) will have to last till I die. ( probably only another 5-10 years max due to bad health problems )

    I have a similar oil caddy and mine doesn’t do well with a diesel oil change because the neck is too skinny to keep up with the flow. Also you’ve only had the truck for a year. 9:45 I was wondering why JR was talking about selling his F250 so soon after buying it and gushing how great it is. For us mere mortals that would be a stupid, wasteful move. But I realized he is using it for business and can take a Section 179 deduction of a huge amount of the cost of the vehicle. Most people sell cars way too early and waste their money. But as usual, JR has thought ahead and this move makes total sense for his business AND he gets a new(ish) business vehicle every year if desired.

    Gotta be careful with those carmax warranties. I had a friend that bought a Focus ST from carmax and got the best max care warranty available. 3 engines later he received a letter stating that he had used the maximum $ amount of coverage (they highlighted the fine print explaining the limitation) and no further claims would be paid out. He traded the car as soon as it got out of the shop for a brand new civic. I will say that the warranty paid for itself like 2.5 times at that point lol.
