Is your prop spinning when under sail, I gues that you have a hydralic gearbox, otherwise you could put it gear when sailing. But you that right.

I presume that whirring sound is the autopilot. I suggest that it is too sensitively adjusted, mine was only occasionally correcting the course. It must be using a lot of battery, because if it is too sensitive it will always over-correct, then the process repeats.

A good idea to stop that spin by using a shaft brake, unless of course the gearbox is designed for it. Slowly spinning while out of gear will either wear out the disks in your clutch or wear out the bearings because the slow spinning gearbox does not properly oil the bearings or the cones--
But some gearboxes have special oil pumps that solve this problem. Mine was not one of them, so I put the gearbox in reverse. That stopped it. Reverse was a lower gearbox ration than forward, putting less pressure of the clutch.
