Former BK2000 owner here and I think I like this one pretty well - the problem I had with older upper-playfield games was that they didn't always have much going on underneath - this one has the whole main level under its BK2K-styled UP, while if I remember right the BK2K main level was mostly just the outer loop and center u-turn lane, since the pops were on the upper, etc. It doesn't look as flowy as I might expect from Steve, but I think the layout is as good as the fan-plus-toys games from the end of Williams. Damn I miss the days when I could buy pins - but even as little as 10 years ago brand new machines were half this money! I bought a LOTR brand new for like 37 bills or so! EDITED TO ADD: Love the music, and I was wondering how long it'd be til I heard STAND UP AND FIGHT!

As a fan of previous BK games and long time owner of a rather nice BK2K.. I found the soundtrack to be exciting. Very metal-rock with the familiar chorus. Game sound is on point - One of Stern's best yet. Playfield. Typical awesome Steve Ritchie layout with plenty of flow. Shots look smooth and fast. The artwork is amazing and the implementation of LEDs is good. Love the RGB effects and the "bulb fade" effect with flashing lights. Takes the harshness of instant off-on LEDs away Great job! Lightning effect is awesome. If I were a decision maker buying one to put in operation, Pro all the way. Easier for casual players, easier to clean and maintain. (Some of us do clean weekly and keep them up). For home? I just can't make myself consider the extra money to get the Premium version with the upper playfield. I will watch closely over the next few months to see if owners report the upper playfields getting dull from wear in play. Six ball multiball is mayhem. Looked too busy for the playfield space, but then it was just once. The upper-playfield just doesn't seem to add the extra $1600 in value in my own opinion. One real negative - why no cabinet protection around the flipper buttons except the LE? I remember the old Stern side rails that had the curved drop-down to protect the cabinet. I really liked them. Even with the Pro version, this is a huge investment at $7000+ when you figure in all the incidental charges to actually get one. Another con, no backglass flashers even on the LE. Again, why omit something that is an attention grabber? I have a T2 in operation, and that post-game flasher show grabs attention. People often walk up to the machine and play it just due to that light show. These used to be basic features that all games used to have. The whole strategy for commercial amusement equipment is to grab attention! Backbox flashers say "Hey! Look at me! Come play!" Thank you Stern for allowing an original title to be made, that pays homage to the previous games! Hearing those sounds of the Retro mode was a really cool, special moment! Pinball needs more original concept titles! All of that being said, I think the overall design is a masterpiece. When it comes to the gameplay, the most important aspect of the game, this one looks fantastic.

Yes no upper playfield and the same goes for mirrored back glass. Both BK and BK2K had mirrored backglass coming as standard but with the new BK you'll have to pay over 10K bucks and go for the LE to get it. And for that price you have no special light show behind the back glass but just the standard fixed LED illumination from the spike CPU board :=(. I really hoped they would have rewarded the owners of those models with some special treats and try to reproduce the ballet of flashers behind the backglass in rythm with the action/music just like BK2K did. That's sad :=(. They didn't even think of putting a real knocker in the LE and ppl will have to cope with this awful digitized fake knocker sound.
Agreed. I'm still looking forward to this table more than any recent Stern machine, but the upper playfield is as much an iconic feature, unique to the Black Knight series, as is Magna Save. Also, maybe I'm an old-head, but it seems like modern pinball software doesn't quite have the kind of intricate coordination between sound, music, light shows and playfield actions as did the great Williams/Bally machines of the 80's and 90's. It's almost as if the more limited hardware of that era (even including DCS audio, which was advanced but still restricted to 4 sound channels), forced the software engineers to plan the machine's responses to simultaneous events very carefully. Nowadays, when everything can trigger at once, there's less....well...showmanship in how the games perform during play. Having said all this, I'm always happy when Steve, Pat and all the legends of pinball have a new table to play, and I can't wait to see this one in person!

As for Bally/Williams,I think the closest you'll get today is Jersey Jack. The light show and sound design on those things is awesome and they;re loaded with mechs and toys. They remind me of the greats from yesterday.

The Black Knight of his Eponymous Pinball series is soo filthy rich just imagine his actual net-worth due to the amount of money he gained from all those pinball players since the awesome 1980s? It turns out he became soooooo rich he built his own castle (or raided someone's castle and seized it for the matter), got his own minions, he even learned The Dark Arts, maybe achieved immortality (albeit he may still be killed, he just can't die) and even found The Sword of Rage. If he ever appears in MK11 as a guest character trading blows with Shao Kahn, its gonna be one of the most insane moments ever seen.
No lyrics? :( I have to add to the chorus of the disappointment with the music... it's good, but its very shallow... the BK2K machine had so many different tracks and versions of a track depending on what was happening or how long you last. It doesn't seem like that with this one. There also doesn't seem to be as many voice clips as I'd have guessed there would be... It really feels like the sound design for the game is incomplete.

I can't tell from the video. Does the upper playfield block LOS to the burning castle at all? Brendon needs to do some Nathan Explosion voices in the game. At least give us a "BRUTAL!"
I own the first two editions of Black Night. They play fantastic. I have had a chance to place this new incarnation. The spinning mace just adds a clunky feature that impeded the game. The upper game field just doesn't have the right flow. They missed the mark on this one.

I....jus... no... my favorite pin... my inspiration to start designing pins of my own... desecrated...ruined... Why an LED screen? Why limit the upper playfield to the higher models? Why ruin the legacy of such a brilliant pin series with an obvious cash grab? I... need some bleach. NGL, that soundtrack? Absolutely legendary. But I cant look at the rest of this table and see it as a cash in. Ill be more overjoyed when Zen brings BK2K to FX3.
I can't do anything to change it. The ongoing trend with the model pricing / feature allotment seems to alienate long time enthusiasts and only serves to reward Stern and those who utilize the supply / demand trend as an investment vehicle. It sucks, hard. Also, as an A/V engineer, Tim, talk INTO the mic, and your shirt has a green headed wang on it that's unseeable.
Steve is one of the best designers of all time - duh. But the nerd factor here from the host is off the scale. Just like people who think pinball is a sport. Dumb.
Honestly idk about this one, a mode based board with like 5 or 6 modes and 2 multiballs? And it’s a black knight game? Sad. There just doesn’t seem to be very many things to do/shots to make. Lacks replay value previous black knights and some stern tables have. The music compared to bk2k is also lacking, lyrics lacking as well. Also the return of magnasave is awesome but imo is completely ruined by its placement here.
