Sitting back as an older generation collector (will be 70 next month and currently with 14 cars) and an Alfisti to boot I sit back and listen to you young chaps and your opinions. Also having owned a Euro car workshop (Italtune here in Christchurch) I feel I`m reasonably qualified to provide a valid opinion on the two cars. I am quite convinced the 156 (I own two, a `98 V6 & 2000 TS 2.0) is one of the best Alfas to have been produced post ww2. It`s styling in this owner`s eyes, particularly the 1st generation still remain a good looking car with little styling features that delight and still gather favourable comment from onlookers. Their interiors are stylish, user friendly and highly durable, more the equal of the German cars I have owned and again generate comment but best of all they are great driving cars, far better than our family`s 159 for example which is a third bigger, feels heavy & unweildy, and apart from the front on view doesn`t look as good exterior wise nor interior wise as a 156. Never owned a 147, never wanted to but have worked on, and driven many. In "my moderns" own a GT (basically same interior) and prefer the 156 interior. I`m saying to every Alfisti that will listen buy a 156 as they will never be cheaper and they are one of the better Alfas which should rise in value. By the way in the real world on real roads ultra low profile tyres and harsh short travel suspension makes for a slower point to point car, certainly in my world with few motorways. You chaps want to drive an unaltered 116 Alfetta or std 105 series Alfa to appreciate real chassis engineering.

Couldn't agree more about the 156 - and especially the pure Walter de Silva styling of the series 1. I'm onto my third 156 V6 and my current GTA is my daily driver, now done over 254,000km. Best car I've owned in the last 35 years.

I had a 147 GTA for about 7 years, which I sadly had to eventually part with, as I had run into some financial struggles at the time and the car needed quite a bit of work that I just couldn't afford to take care of.
I've owned a twin turbo Subaru Legacy, an original 1989 MX5, a Lexus IS200, a Alfa Giulietta QV, a Mercedes C250 an 8V Audi S3 and a Skoda Octavia RS245. Most of those were excellent cars by every measure, but none of them (bar the MX5) really came close to having the character of that 147 GTA.
My GTA was my daily driver for about 2-3 years, but due to work circumstances I bought the C250 as my daily, and at that point the GTA became my dedicated weekend car for last 3 years or so that I had it. The C-Class did every part of the "daily driver" thing to perfection, but it had zero capacity for "fun". The throttle response was laggy, the gearbox was slow to change, the engine suffered from noticable turbo lag, and when revved out the engine sounded coarse and strained - it was the type of car that could really only be enjoyable when driven in full grandpa mode. So every time life felt boring and tedious and uneventful I'd put the C-Class back the garage and take the GTA to work for the day.
I swear that all it took was a single turn of the key (for that Busso growl to kick in) and a little smile would instantly appear on my face. About 10 minutes into the drive that little smile had turned in to a huge grin, and for that 20-25 minutes drive all of my worries in life seemed to disapear.
The Alfa unqustionably had it's wekanesses - the turning circle was a pain, it was a bit hard/crashy over bumps, it was loud, it was thirsty and by this point it had become a pretty expensive thing to keep ont he road...so because of all that I was never really tempted again to daily drive it. But in a way that just added to the charm. Becaus I only drive it once or twice a week it made each drive feel like a treat, and it made the car feel even more special.
I actually had a breakup from a 8 year relationship which unfortuantely happened about 6 months before Covid hit. I couldn't really date or go out with friends due to restrictions, and it really felt for a peroid of a couple of years like I was stuck on an island on my own - I could only leave my house to go to work or essential grocery shopping. And frankly, the little smile that my 147 GTA put on my face every time I drove it was one of the rare things at that time that actually made me feel alive and feel some sense of joy. It's hard to put a dollar value on that.
For all their flaws these late Busso Alfas are truly special cars, and I'm very seriously considering buying another as my long-term weekend ride now that I can actually afford to keep it maintained.

Love the GTA's. Just a quick comment on the "silencer" box on the intake. Leave it in. It wasn't designed as a silencer but to equalise or balance the airflow into the MAF. I knew someone who removed and replaced it with a carbon pipe and the car got between 6 -10 HP less power on the dyno. He couldn't understand where the ponies had gone until eventually he put the box back out of desperation and the power went back to where it was. The Italians were indeed very smart with the design of the box.

Ok maybe controversial I'm going to throw the GT into the mix... I know it wasn't badged a GTA but it did get the Busso... Would be nice to see that compared to the 156 and 147 as it was part of the family... That being said of the two on show 156 all day long... Also would prefer the sport wagon

Agree. GT with the 3.2 Busso has the chassis of the 156 GTA and 2 door hatch and front interior of the 147 plus plush coupe rear interior and Bertoni lines. Stiffer shell than it's sisters too

    • @pete3198

      I agree.
In fact in some ways one could argue that it's the best all round package of the three.
IIRC the wheelbase is slightly larger then the 147, so the rear seat space is better (closer to that of the 156) - yet it has the best cargo area of the three by far, with similar boot space to the 156 combined with the hatch flexibility of the 147.
It's also got styling that is more sleek and elegant, and less "look at me". This could be seen as a plus or minus depending on who you ask, but I'm gettign to an age where I kinda appreciate the "wolf in sheeps clothing" element.
From what I understand the GT also has a nicer gearshift then the 147 GTA, which from my experience (and from feedback I got from others) was a big vaugue and sloppy.
My ownly issue with the GT is that it doesn't have the aggressive bucket sets from the GTA models - those seats were one of my favourite things about my 147 GTA and to this day are the best seats ive ever sat in on any car.

Heard you mention the Giulia Q. I’m lucky to own both a 156 GTA (SW) and a Giulia Q. Of course, the Giulia is miles and miles better in every way. There isn’t a single objective thing I can think of that the 156 does better. However, the nice thing about Italian cars is that ‘objective’ only goes so far. Subjectively, the Giulia’s V6 can’t hold a candle to the Busso in terms of sound, but also responsiveness on the NA engine will always feel crisper. And then there are small things like the GTA seats which look like Ferrari seats from the 70s, or the ‘Shrek ears’ wing mirrors that would not pass regulations anymore, or the red instruments lighting in the dark. In the end, you get emotionally attached to this stuff and as a petrolhead, that’s what counts most.

I’ve got a 156 gta had it 8 years and still love driving it. It’s got cf2 manifolds, wizard downpipes, wizard cat back, yellow konis, eibach arb’s, eibach lowering springs, mtech quick shift and q2 diff. 0:01 But just over a year ago I got a gt 3.2 which I saved after being off the road for a few years with alternator gone and need timing belt doing. So ended up with new alternator, water pump, timing belt kit, full service, eibach lowering springs, yellow konis, eibach arb’s, cf2 manilfolds, wizard downpipes, scorpion cat back and quaife diff.
I drive the gt more but it’s coming off the road this month as needs sills/rear arch and some paintwork.
The wife has a 156 gta Sw selespeed with eibach arb’s, red konis, apex lowering springs, q2 diff, centre de cat, scorpion cat back and 18’s

I have a 147 and 156 GTA and would agree that the 156 feels more refined and relaxing to drive. The 147 feels more edgy and angry, it's as if their looks reflect their characters.

I’ve owned both cars, I had a black 156 GTA about 10 years ago and daily drove it for 4 years. I have now owned a blue 147 GTA for 5 years as a weekend toy. They are both fantastic cars.!!
For me interior wise the 156 felt just that bit more special though mine had a faulty info screen that was annoying (a common fault), my 147 GTA has the Tan inserts that do get a lot of comments. Exterior, the ass end of a saloon 156 GTA is just sweet, but overall the 147 GTA does it for me.
My 156 GTA was completely stock bar a stainless exhaust and it drove just fine, my 147 GTA has had a complete suspension overhaul similar to that featured in the vid and would agree it’s harder work to drive but as it’s a weekend toy its fine with me. It’s also had some intake work done and feels a lot quicker than my old 156. Either way they are both great cars and would recommend them to anyone who wants a cool fun fast car.. 😎😀

I love the 147 GTA, it looks really cool and to have this busso engine in a hatchback shape is awesome. But i do prefer the 156 GTA, because it is so damn cool. I own a 156 2.5 V6 24V myself and I absolutely love it. The busso engine is smooth, powerfull and it sounds awesome. Fun fact is that mine has the GTA dashboard, which was part of the facelift they got in 2003. I have it for 6 years now and it hasnt given me any problems, it is more reliable than people think. A 156 GTA is dream car for me, but it is very rare here in the Netherlands and the prices are rising, even for the more normal 156s. So much for my thoughts. Great video and I love the channel.

My 147 GTA was honestly pretty damn bulletproof for the first 4-5 years I owned it. A couple or small niggly things I had to fix here and there, but no different to any other car ive owned of the same vintage.
I got pretty unlucky though in the final year I had it. The ECU failed (which are notoriously hard to find, and hence expensive to replace), there was also a coolant leak, the driver side power window swich failed, and i got an issue with the oxygen sensor. These all came up within a period of about 6 months, and cost me in the ballpark of AU $5,000 to fix.
To anybody considering buying one of these, I recommend keeping $4,000 - $5,000 aside at all times just to be safe. If all goes well you'll never need it, but if you get unlucky and something big goes wrong, it'll save you a lot of heartache.

I had a 156 GTA Sportwagon for 14 years and it's actually the red one with the sunroof, plus the factory sat nav, as tested by JayEmm on his TH-cam channel. Apart from the expensive cam-belt change (done three times in its lifetime), it was exceptionally reliable, but it ceased to be my daily drive. I now have a very different 2017 Giulietta TBi Veloce (with a double sunroof) in splendid Competizione Red which, I have to say, has been brilliant - and drives superbly. I've had it for two years and have only needed to replace a windscreen washer bottle and a number plate bulb. It has now covered 103,000 miles, sailed through six MoTs with - critically - not ONE advisory. My MoT boys have told me NEVER to sell it. But, I am tempted by a 147 GTA - as a 'weekend' car, but I'll have to find another garage first. I am currently on my seventh Alfa, having owned a 1983 GTV6 (like Mr Clarkson has now) for 20 years, plus a 3 Litre GTV and 145 Cloverleaf. As us 'Alfisti' like to tell those who have never had the pleasure, Alfa Romeos possess charm, brio and charisma ... unlike any other mainstream, European manufacturer. Finally, thank you, Ant, for your honest and informative reviews ... and for your enthusiasm for a marque that continues to give 'old geezers' like me such profound enjoyment.

I've owned a 147 GTA so I guess you could say I'm biased, but personally I lean towards the 147 for a few reasons:
    1. I personally prefer the exterior styling of the 147. To me it looks like Alfa designed the 156 and then decided to make the GTA version later down the road - the body kit kinda sticks out with the sharp angles and looks a bit like someone just took a 156 and bolted some aftermarket body parts on it. By comparison the 147 GTA looks aggressive but also looks smooth - the body kit flows seamlessly with the shape of the car. It almost looks like Alfa designed the 147 GTA first, and then rolled back the design on the base model to make it look more basic.
    2. I feel the two door body on the 147 makes it look more youthful, sleek and sporty
    3. The hatch layout also makes he 147 a lot more flexible - I've had times where I've had to transport large items, and with the back seats folded flat it's surprsing just how much you can fit in the back of the 147. Over the years I've been drawn more and more away from sedans, as the the boots are very restrictive - not only are you limited in your ability to fit large items, but it's also hard to reach in to the far end of the boot to reach items that have fallen back there.
    4. I feel like 147 is a bit more unique. The overwhelming majority of hatchbacks are fairly disinteresting looking turbo fours with low rent interiors, so the 147 GTA (with it's italian styling flair, luxurious interior and hearty V6) really stood out as something truly unique and memorable within it's category. By comparison it seemsalmost everybody makes a higher performance prestige 6/8 cylinder sedan, so I feel like this made the 156 GTA a little more forgettable when you have competing products like the BMW M3, Audi RS4 and Mercedes C43 AMG which all had lots of street cred and special drivetrains.
    5. When it comes to prestige performance saloons people generally expect RWD or AWD. Any such car with FWD is often looked down upon as being a downgrade from what's expected, and this sometimes hurt the rep of the 156 GTA compared to its cometitors. By comparison FWD is perfectly respectable for hot hatches (even extreme hot hatches that dominated the nurburring like the Type R and Megane RS use FWD), so the FWD layout of the 147 GTA isn't really looked down upon by the car world the way it is on the 156 GTA - even though they are such similar cars.
That said, I'd be more then happy with either a 147 GTA, 156 GTA or a GT 3.2 V6. I miss my old 147 GTA like crazy.

  • @goxy287
    @goxy287 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I feel called out with the blacked out grill having done it on my 156 :D. But yeah the 156 def feels more special and premium interior wise and in general, the 147 feels more modern. I like the front end on the 147 better I think but overall the line of the 156 is cooler. There's also gta facelifts (or at least busso equipped ones) of the 156's and not of the 147's, at least from what I've seen. And the 156 facelifted looks like a modern Alfa. Also I think the center console is also different color on newer q2 etc 147's, not just the gta.
I've never driven gta's only a cheap 147 and a cheap 156 so I cant say much, but I somehow get what he means, at 18 and 19 I was fine with little zippy uncomfortable nuggets, at 24 Im bothered by slight uncomfort in a car so it's definetly nice when stuff is easy and effortless.

The suspension design advantage the 156 GTA has over 147 GTA is actually a disadvantage if its not all in tip top condition and aligned well. This is not a given with old Alfa's. I remember powerflexing my 3.0GTV at the rear and it lost some pliance and rear end stability but it was nice not worrying about all 16 bushes perishing!

Well the 4C was designed as a light, back-to-the-basics sports car, so its cable actuated air controls make perfect sense, as does the manual steering.

The 156 was $30k more than the 147 here in Oz but no way it was a $30k better car. It has better seats and that's about it. The 156 is a bit more grown up being a sedan but the 147 is the more nimble handler.

Good shout but having owned both Al depends on what models , if we was to say a gta 156 against a v6 159 then I’d choose the 156 Gta all day long.

147GTA Owner here and I’d say I loved both. But honestly speaking if you take the money and practicality out of the equation, my choice will be 156GTA SW> 147GTA >156. As a 3.2 Busso on both Wagon and Hatch just makes it extra special. However, I’d agreed any day that 156 has a better interior over 147 with more designs and details. 147 is a bit ordinary in comparison.
