I recently worked on a commercial where the director was really stressing colors to convey story elements. It was interesting to think about that, and after watching this it just amazes me how much details goes into telling a story such as the character wearing something contrasting to draw attention, or the color difference between scenes. Always a treat to discover something new like that.
This is not a film mentioned by critics ever, but I found The Last Five Years to be a good example of telling a story with color. The original stage musical used time cards to show us where in the relationship the scene took place between the two main characters, but the film, instead of using those time cards, used warmer tones for the early, happy stages of the relationship and contrasted that with colder blues for when the scene was placed toward the end of their relationship. Increasingly warmer (almost completely orange) at the very start and almost a monotone blue for the end of it. I thought it was a brilliant use of color and a great way to cinematically give the audience a timeline without the time cards.
at 4:20 he talks about the taint of the color a bile-colored color and how the main character has to 'endure' his surroundings. Very great use of explaining color here.
Idk where you're watching Whiplash but the dad was *definitely* wearing blue in that scene, plus he was very supportive of Andrew's drumming he just didn't want him to get hurt and he didn't understand how passionate he was about it
Bit late to this but from what I've gathered from this film and your analysis is that green seems to present obstacles or struggles. I think blue seems to present the vulnerabilities of Andrew or when he is vulnerable. And yellow presents when he's in the zone or in a moment of success. In the final scene of Andrews performance starts in blue light because Flether tricked him into doing something he doesn't know how to do. But when andrew takes over and does caravan is when the lights turn yellow. What I also noticed is that Andres shirt colour fluctuate between wearing white, black over white, and black to obviously symbolise his evolution into his obsession. And how since Fletcher also consistently where's black when he's teaching and when he isn't he wears a different colour. Andrew subconsciously tries to match this colour of black to symbolise in the end that ultimately him and his teacher are on the same page
Did you know that you are one of the favorite channel of a Turkish TH-camr called Barış Özcan. He told about you in a Live Broadcast. Turkish people will love your channel. Thanks to Barış Özcan. :)
He said he was cancelling it cause the anticipation he felt was too great and would disappoint too many people because of the long wait and expectations
Hi, I wanted to ask you, how do you set your camera exposure for indoor night scenes or low key indoor scenes ( with lighting) you mentioned you try to get the most in camera, do you mean you underexpose without crushing the blacks too much? I shoot with eoshd c-log 80d 2.8 lens And another question I’ve tried all different log pictures profile and eoshd c-log is the one I prefer for color grading even if it’s not real log, should I keep the 18% middle grey around 40 ire or should I expose like neutral prolost profile in the middle? Thank you in advance, bless you✨
I've been watching a lot of old episodes recently. I've been around from the start. Not with this channel i'm commenting from, but I've been a long time follower a long the years, there is not an episode that I haven't watched. I've seen every episode, short film, bts video and so on. I watched Filmstate when that was a thing and more-- i'm really looking forward to watch Ballistic!
It doesn't always work, but for this it did. I think this is great to know for student filmmakers, because most student films tend to go either dead, monotonous colors or extremely oversaturated. Knowing the in-between and when to use certain techniques would be a great help.
I wouldn't say the beginning has correct skin tones or white balance, there is a definite green tint in the WB. I find a lot of films go towards a more green bias in the white balance even when the colors are supposed to be normal. You really only ever see perfect white balance in reality television or comedies.
"Realistic" colors in movies for the last 15 years or so have been either grungy browns and greens or cold, steely blues. It's extremely rare for whatever reason to see anything that actually resembles reality anymore.
Yeah, using true white makes it feel less cinematic for some reason. But I think he was just trying to make a point in how it didn't have aggressive tinting like the other scenes.
Commander Shepperd This isn't an official comment but based on other YT channels probably have good connections or have a really good CV and apply while they are hiring.
How to get Stunt Actor Job/Career as a fresh in Canadian Movies or any Movie Production Studios?? I am a Martial Artist and Action Stunt Performer. I need guidance please
Are there any good FREE (or really inexpensive) editing programs that allow color grading for beginners? I would need one that can run on a lower end PC. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
Short answer NO. For color grading there is Resolve free full version, but needs a good deal of power. The same goes for the great HitFilm Express. Also free but.... you need a good GPU.
Thanks for the response. I currently have VSDC free video editor. Is that any good? I have a 500 gb hard drive and 8 gb of ram on my laptop, so you know.
VSDC is considered a good free editor. Your laptop is very minimal for Video Editing but will work with VSDC. Professional video editors that do FX and Color grading ALL recommend more memory and a video card (GPU) with a lot of power. Onboard video on most laptops and PCs just are not powerful enough to render without lag and stuttering. I am not an expert by any stretch, this is just what I have learned as I am getting started in video editing.
Hey guys, I'm interested in micro-budget filmmaker solutions to not having much money for equip. but still are able to produce good production value... I invite you to stop by and tell me about your films and the no-budget solutions you came up with... I will definitely check your films out and offer my ideas as well... Thanks much, Moses...
I LOVE you guys so much and how you teach film but honestly I don't like when you show other peoples teachings. I subscribe to film riot because I like the way you guys do things. I am always really dissapointed when I click on a FilmRiot video and it's you just saying "Watch This" I will always watch every video you put out but to me I feel like I lose a week of Film Riot.
Hey Film Riot! loved the video, Im a 19 year old filmmaker and am trying to get some feedback on my last short film! I would love if anyone wanted to check it out and leave me some feedback, Thanks guys hope you enjoy "Lake Crest Drive"

My mind doesn't want to believe how deliberate the color grading is. Truly Amazing
Whiplash is a pure master piece
Love the grading of this movie

I had noticed this without knowing 😂 So amazing 😍

Great lol, now we're going to see a bunch of people trying to follow this and making skin tones beyond over-saturated
lol
Gotta start somewhere.
You mean like Michael Bay and his "orange/red" actors :D ?
It doesn't always work, but for this it did. I think this is great to know for student filmmakers, because most student films tend to go either dead, monotonous colors or extremely oversaturated. Knowing the in-between and when to use certain techniques would be a great help.
this is a powerful tutorial. never knew that til now. its still hard to put it into work though

Hey Ryan, where are we going to be able to listen to your podcasts? Soundcloud?
The red-headed drummer is named Ryan Connolly in the film!
I was on board with the podcast as soon as he said Andrew Kramer
I have a podcast show like that, too. Plenty of room for more of them. Looking forward to your interviews.

Amelie on Netflix right now utilizes color the best way.
Shazam is finally out, Now I know what it is!
I was just noticing this sort of thing while watching Defenders a couple weeks ago

Was the thumbnail Whiplash, or did I see it wrong? Nvm, I'm pretty sure I saw it right, because it was one of the main focuses of the video.
1:25 before the video begins.. 🙄
Green might means toxic, but gold/orange.....dangerous, toxic?......nah.
WHY HAVEN’T YOU MADE A FEATURE YET??!!
Kek (笑´・艸・) Cool episode guys !!! I really liked the way a dude said saturated color implies “Unhealthy” or “Disgusting” relationship.
WHEN is ballistic coming???
