I totally see where everyone is coming from when criticising aspects of this talk. And, while I hadn't thought of it, you are probably right. Points were broad strokes and words were loose. I love that we can question our teachers in this community. STILL, I would like to internalise his points as a bit more metaphorical. In the end, may all beings have happiness and its causes. And we love you, Gil. You help make the world a better place.
I would invite all the reacting folk to consider how you would create dialogue that is deeper than partisan side-taking or right-wrong judgmental processes…I deeply appreciate teachers who take on the inescapable questions of our time, questions for all times, efforts to quiet the drums of war.
There’s no “right / wrong” but a powerful oppressive side and one being wiped out with our tax dollars. Spirituality is what we live and not speaking up against this injustice goes against all The precepts.
First, love your teaching Gil. You have been a life changing resource for me on this meditation path. But in mentioning the pro-palestinian protest at the beginning of the talk you said that it was organized by hamas and that protesters called for the death of jews. In researching this, i cannot find evidence for either of these claims. There is an active student led pro-palestinian activist group on campus who seemed to organize this. And i read that they called for intifada, which means arab uprising. Maybe this is what ppl thiught was calling for the death of jews? But intifada in no way means death to jews. I as a jew also support an intifada against the genocidal, oppressive government israel. I understand the talk to be about making friends out of enemies and the transformative power of love but to conflate pro-palestinian protesters with hamas and a call for intifada as a call for the death of jews is truly dangerous. I can only hope that you have been misinformed. Thank you for your teaching.
Thank you for your insights. I was very disappointed in this framing of the pro-Palestinian protests as led by Hamas (There has not been a single protest in the US led by Hamas). It's not only misinformed but also dangerous. I appreciate Gil's teaching and kind affect, but the unattended, yet underlying message here, is the subordination of Palestinian lives. At the heart of any Pro-Palestinian protest is the mourning for the loss of 30,000+ lives of Palestinians. Also, his framing of Middle Eastern violence as stemming from Middle Easterners themselves (Gil claims they have not learned their lesson) is, frankly, racist and ahistorical. I appreciate Gil's teaching on Buddhism and his calm demeanour, but his narrow understanding of history and politics means he's not qualified to talk about these issues because aspects of his speech are harmful, even if the opposite is intended here.
Yes incredibly ill-informed and dangerously biased. Gil has been, for about 5 years, one of my favorite dharma teachers and I'm afraid after the deafening silence for 5 months and this talk following it, I can no longer follow his teachings. Hoping he come across new information and is able to change his mind, as I know he has a very kind heart. In the mantime, I'm taking a break from listeing to him and finding teachers who can address the injustices we've been witnessing without having this strong bias towards Israel. My heart continues to be broken for the Palestinean people and now alo, for losing this dear teacher as my guide.
Also to compare it to sports team was horrendously insenstive. They are not sports teams gil. There are children dying in gaza having their limbs amputated without anesthesia. Its not a joke for people to cheer on for or against. I am so disappointed. This talk also completely ignores the history of the creation of israel, based on brutal violence and colonization of the palestinian people. To wag the finger at both sides is completely ignorant. There is a cause to this problem and that cause is supported by the US and British governments. To deny that fact and say that both are at fault is completely wrong. One is the colonizing power, one is oppressed. Would you tell a jew to love a nazi? Would you tell them to roll over and die while lineages of their family are being decimated?

💛🙏 Yes, Gil, thank you, “may we all transform our enemies into our friends.”

@@luizaflips i feel the same. I followed them for years and i have been so disappointed by the response of IMC.
