  • SilverTorch66 presents: Philippine Silver Peso American Colonial Period
    During an R&R visit to the Philippine Islands this summer, I decided to Acquire some silver to add to my collection. This series of videos called "Silver Travel" will present my silver pick ups and of course include a little story about the history behind them.
    From 1903 to 1912 there was a series of Silver coins produced by the United States after they acquired control of the Philippine Islands as a result of defeating Spain during the Spanish American War of 1898. This video will present the coins of this series that I acquired during my recent visit to the Philippine Islands.
    The obverse, credited to Filipino sculptor Melecio Figueroa, features the standing figure of an adolescent Philippina wearing a long, flowing gown and holding a hammer in her right hand, resting atop an anvil. Her left arm is half raised and holds an olive branch. Behind her is a depiction of the volcano Mt. Mayon, …….an almost perfectly conical shaped volcanic mountain northeast of the capital city of Manila. Above the design you will find inscribed the denomination “ONE PESO” and below the word “FILIPINAS”.
    The reverse displays the arms of the US Territories Shield, a broad winged eagle clutching an olive branch in its right claw and a bundle of arrows in its left, sitting atop a shield divided into two registers. The upper register has 13 stars, and the lower register has 13 vertical stripes. The date appears at the bottom, and "United States of America" appears at the top. To the left of the year may be a mint mark “S” for San Francisco. Coins with no mint marks were minted at the Philadelphia Mint.
    Variety 1consists of the years 1903-1906 - its diameter is 38mm,the Silver Weight of this coin is 0.780 ounces (total weight is 26.956 grams and is comprised of 90% silver)
    Variety 2: consists of the years 1907-1912 - its diameter is 36mm , the Silver Weight of this coin is 0.514 ounces (total weight is 20.000 grams and is comprised of 75% silver)

    Sir i have a 1906 coin,, i ask a coin collector they ask me about the weight i told them its 24.9 and the diameter is 37.5... they say its fake but my grandmother its already in her position since world war 2.. does it mean during wrld war 2 there is already counterfeit? Please advice..thank you.

    • @SilverTorch66
      @SilverTorch66  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jabe, based on the weight and diameter you stated, I would also say it is probably a counterfeit. A definite determination can only be achieved by a hands on inspection! Even if this coin is counterfeit, it could still have some value if it's a good counterfeit! Nothing like the value of an authentic 1906 though. I would recommend that you hang on to this coin. Don't let anyone convince you to sell it until you are very sure of its true value. Can you send me some pictures of it, front and back, to silvertorch66@yahoo.com Thanks!

    • @SilverTorch66
      @SilverTorch66  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jabe, If you want to seriously find out what your coin is worth you will need to send it to a professional grading company. It can get a little expensive but if your coin turns out to be authentic, it will be well worth it! Check out these vids th-cam.com/video/Mor8i6JiiqE/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/9PszJB_pkvo/w-d-xo.html. www.ngccoin.com/submit-coins/how-to-submit.aspx I would have a hard time trusting a local grader especially given the potential value of your particular coin. I would try to do every possibly scrutiny to this coin before spending the money to have it professionally graded. Good lucj!

    Beautiful coin and nice history. I've always wanted to get myself a Phillino silver peso. The US Mint also made commemorative silver pesos depicting Franklin Roosevelt and Philippine president Manuel Quezon in 1936. These 1936 commemorative silver pesos have mintages of 10,000.

      Double check your coin date. During the Second World War, no coins were minted from 1942 to 1943 due to the Japanese Occupation. In preparation for General MacArthur's return to the Philippines, the Treasury Department ordered the San Francisco Mint to strike millions of Fifty Centavos coins. The San Francisco Mint struck 19.187 million Fifty Centavos in 1944 and 18.120 million in 1945. When American forces liberated the Philippines in 1944 - 1945 they brought with them the Victory Coins produced in the continental United States. The 50 Centavos coins produced in 1944 and 1945 were of .750 fineness. Due to the large number of coins issued between 1944 and 1947, coins were not minted again until 1958.
