  • The dancers of the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center plié, pirouette and jeté to their own rhythm in a new form called Hiplet. The dance draws on both the movements of hip-hop and classical ballet technique and is performed on pointe shoes. We caught up with the dance's creator, Homer Hans Bryant, to learn some of the moves, get the story behind its inception and find out what it takes to make it as a Hiplet dancer.

      Dezh22 Finally someone has said it! I did ballet and I'm sick of people saying this "offends them" and that "they're making a mockery of ballet". There are many forms and types of dance and if someone finds something enjoyable, why scorn them for that!

    • @ksy4747
      @ksy4747 7 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      Dezh22 lol when ballet started out, it was a far cry from what classical ballet is perceived as now, anyways! its been going through evolution and change since I think the 15th century. And just less than a 100 years ago, ballerinas were supposed to be short, stalky and definitely not willowy. I forgot the name of the first ballerina who broke that boundary but she did and thanks to her we have these anorexics running around! lol I'll never forget a Russian film about ballet I saw as a child called "dancing ghosts" (my own translation, so I could be wrong) and how strict they were about even an inch or an ounce of fat on the dancers body...dance is for everyone and everyone has a right to participate and to interpret however they want. I've always danced and my own dancing went through so much evolution. I started off loving and doing classical ballet (which I had to stop doing short after starting) and now I love just dancing from my heart, very primal and primitive, almost trance and ritualistic like. and I dont give a fuck what anyone thinks about my dancing because purest dance is a like a purest prayer, needs to come from heart and soul. plus I love all things tribal and that translated into my dancing..or maybe I love all things tribal because of my dancing style..lol conundrum

Also, a lot of the hiplet moves are supposed to be on sickled feet and that's dangerous, both for the dancer and developing a dangerous habit for actual ballet😢

      Serena Tang I would assume as with it being their interpretation of ballet, some rules and techniques would change. As they said, it's hiplet and quite frankly, it's just as good and normal as any traditional(although a bit sleepy) ballet put onto any stage. It's an art form and people have diferent ways to express themselves. As you can see their form is more loose and a lot less "swanlike". It's funky and groovy. It's hip hop.

    I love the idea of hiplet and what it offers for all dancers. However, I'm predicting that there is going to be lots of injured dancers after trying this. I see they're all classically trained, but it is very evident that all the work goes right out the window as they start to dance hiplet. None of them could go on the full boxes of their shoes and several were sickling bad. Not being able to go on your box and sickling in ballet can get you removed from your class because of how dangerous it is to do either. I'm going to assume it's even more dangerous to do either while dancing hip hop. While these young women are likely aware and are doing everything to prevent injury, the thousands of little girls looking up to them do not know that this is not proper pointe work. Yes pointe work has to be proper, that is why ballet is so strict, to prevent injury. I see several pulled muscles, sprained ankles, and damaged joints in their futures. They should include an advisory and explain how long they trained in order to even go en pointe for the first time so little girls won't be so tempted to try this. And yes, I am a pointe dancer.

    I don't understand where this whole "black girls can't do ballet" thing came from. I live in the UK and have been doing ballet since I was 3 years old and I have never come across such comments in my life. I don't know if its an American thing or something...
    Edit 2021: so I'm black btw, the main issue I had was with hairstyles and texturism more than anything else I must say l, that does not make anyone else's experience invalid.
    Edit 2021: so many of you in these comments are loud and wrong, I'm saying I've never come across PEOPLE telling me I shouldn't be in ballet, there were barriers to accessing things but as a kid I thought it was quite normal. I was trying to say I can't imagine anyone saying that to ME where I live, that doesn't mean the issue of race in ballet is non existent

    • @Mr.Tryandstopme
      @Mr.Tryandstopme 7 ปีที่แล้ว +240

      Yes it is an American thing. It's become trendy in America to claim that one is a victim for not being white or by being a woman. Most of these claims are not true though. Most people like to play the victim in order to avoid criticism.

      I think it's because most black people are bigger boned/heftier than white people, which can be discouraging. I'm the only black person dancing in my class and I'm Jamaican, the moves are always harder for me because i'm just naturally heavier (i'm an aerial dancer) and in general, bigger than the rest of my classmates. I suspect that anyone white or black that seems to have a heaviness to them may find it harder to fit in sometimes.

      There are many ‘white’ girls that also can’t do ballet because of their physique. Too tall. Too short etc etc etc. But don’t make a huge issue of it. Just suffer disappointment. Even if they have trained full time since 11yrs old. I don’t understand that when a girl of another colour can’t do ballet they pull the race card. As it has already been said. Is it an American thing? I only look for talent not colour when watching a performance.

    I will never understand when someone says something is "insulting" to a genre of music or dance or movie without someone outright verbalizing an insult to it. How is it an insult? Like man just ignore it? They aren't going up to you and saying "alright, ballet sucks this is whats new and better." They are doing their thing, you can do your thing. The only people who find something else insulting by simply existing is people who seek attention.
    No, no, no; they can't do that because that takes away from the prestige and elitism that I uphold. These other people are trying to do this thing, but they can't, because only I can. The classically trained, the expensive film schools, the music tutors. They shouldn't try their own form of art because I want mine to be special. I want mine to be exclusive and I want everyone to pay attention to what i'm doing. That's some petty shit.

But ballerinas give up everything including their childhood to dance, so our money has always been used on the shoes and the lessons instead of toys and as adults, fancy holidays or stuff like bowling and eating out. For christmas, we wish for a pair of pointe shoes or a few extra lessons. It's our passion, so the price ain't gonna stop us ;)

Hiplet just seems very dangerous because the girls aren’t getting on their boxes and a lot of the girls have sickled feet. Also I just don’t know why you would combine the two when you could just do ballet or hip hop? Like pointe hurts and is special to ballet so idk why you’d do hip hop on pointe too. I don’t know it’s just my opinion. Again don’t come at me, I’m just sharing my opinion! :)

When someone mentions the negativity, the "others" deny it and say it's actually Blacks hating on them. It's gotten so I can almost guess what kinds of comments will be present in the comment section: "It's not just Black people/women. All people do that. Why do they have to bring race into it? They're the ones being racist." Lol and smh. Apparently it is the unpardonable sin to speak on anything positive relating to Black people/women. kmross73 I'm not saying what you pointed out isn't real, but you are over personalizing this thing.. this is the internet, you are confused about there being bigots and racists and xenophobes hating on dark skin pigmented people???
      it is not an objective reference for the opinions or potential of people in a given real world instance..
      It's general human conditioning.. no one race or people or culture is free from this.. I mean honestly, if one has any objectice perceptive ability at all, that is very easy to see.. (for example hardcore music.. this is not popular, and alot of people will say and project a lot of stupid shit onto this thing, or anime or alot of things).. I'm sorry but the only way to truly be objective in this world is to look outside the personal narrative. Otherwise it's just an endless cycle of the bickering of egos.. "My team is better, no this team is the best, no those teams suck, its this one"... by you think I'm defending "white" people because my pic..... (no)....

    I'm all for mixing dance styles. Juzz funk, contemporary fusion, yes please, bring it on. But in my opinion this just doesn't work. Pointe shoes were created to create that illusion of floating and defying gravity. You pull up. On the other hand in hip hop you need to really think down and be grounded. Embrace the floor. And putting it all together just looks awkward to me. But if it makes them happy, yeah sure, dance is for everybody! Just ladies, don't hurt your ankles! Hip hop on poite can be dangerous because its fast accented nature.

      I feel the same, and I feel bad about it because I *do* genuinely think the concept and fusion of styles is great, but being en pointe is difficult for *anyone* and requires a lot of technique and strength, and some of these woman just don't seem to be there yet :/ Especially with hiplet, the bouncing/jerking style lends itself to injury almost too easily, so I hope their teacher will work on that.

    • @Svana_Scribbles
      @Svana_Scribbles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Ballet CAN be injury, but if done PROPERLY then injury is less likely to occur. I don't know why you're here talking about how "barbaric" it is, when I'm talking about the dancers not dancing properly. Think what you want, its your opinion, but you can get the fuck off my comment with your hate. Not all dancers are anorexic, have lost their period or have mangled feet. Ballet is a beautiful art form and if you disagree, leave. Don't leave your unwanted opinion on my comment. Make your own damn comment.

      The box is the square part at the tip of the shoe that supports the toes/foot on all sides. "Getting over the box" means your pointed foot is arched/strong enough (and that the shoe fits well enough) so that the box is vertical and in line with the toes and ankle and not at an angle. Here's a reference: pointeperfect.com/over-the-box/

    • @billywhite6940

      Mottenmond you are correct, classical ballet does have strict "rules" surrounding placement and posture that are designed to prevent injury. I can guarantee that these girls will have broken ankles in the next couple of years due to the "sickling" of their feet and not getting completely over the box. Honestly, they have the technique of 12 year olds.

    A long time ago, I danced only hip hop ... I’m not a trained dancer or anything but I loved dancing. When I moved to a big city for college, I was excited to have the opportunity to finally attend dance classes. I started off with hip hop and liked it. I decided to try ballet because It’s so precise and wonderful. I’ll never forget the instructor saying “you guys need to stay tall, don’t go down or slouch. God, if you’re going to do that. Just get out and go to hip hop.” It honestly bummed me out that she had that attitude towards another genre of dance.

    I think it's awesome! They're learning classical ballet and learning hip-hop, and merging the two together, which I'm sure many would have thought to be styles that are like oil and water, but they're doing it, and well! And they're having fun, enjoying themselves, and creating something new!

    I just have a question? How many "years" of formal ballet training they have? Pointe shoe work is a challenge you accomplish after maaaaany years of training. As a former ballet dancer I can tell I've noticed some weak ankles there and that is very dangerous. Nothing to do with the race but with the strength of your ankles which you get, as I said, after years of training.

I love ballet, though am not at all able to do it, and all I see when I watch it is the amazing grace, beauty, and power of the dancers, both male and female. This Hiplet dancing looks like it's a tremendous amount of fun for anyone trained in ballet, and if I was physically able, I'd be dancing my feet off with this terrific way of moving!!! I know absolutely nothing about how ballet is meant to be performed, of course, so please forgive me for showing my ignorance.

    nope. not a fan. sorry. beauty of ballet lies in the technique. and guess what? if you're not doing the right ballet technique you will blow your ankles out by the time you hit 25. fact. That's why it takes years to be great. not knocking anyone on their hustle..but you can't fuck around with ballet technique. it's been around before us and will stay on long after.

They aren't going over the box and that can, believe it or not, hurt them very badly. Heck, I do it all the time on here with little white girls posting videos asking if they're ready for pointe. I'm going to start assuming anyone who tries to make something about race is racist.

    It's awesome to express yourself and stuff but from what I'm reading on here from people who have been doing ballet on here for over half their lives? This isn't healthy
    This isn't good for their ankles, posture, and will most likely come back to bite them in the ass. I may not be a ballet dancer, but I am a figure skater and I have done hip hop. Ballet requires fluidity and airiness while hip hop is focused on center of gravity and keeping yourself grounded.
    It's really cool to express yourself and all, but if it costs you your joints and health? Please don't.
    On top of that from what I have seen in the video this appears to be hip hop but on your tip toes? I haven't seen much aspects of ballet within other than a few plies.
    But again, I'm not a dancer. I'm just a figure skater and someone who dabbled in hip hop.
    Ballet is something known all across the world and is danced in so many countries... it'd kinda suck if this is what people thought of when someone said ballet rather than classical ballet

    In several ways i am impressed but at the same time disappointed. This video segregates based on "race". They are doing the same thing that they accuse others of doing in ballet. I don't think that anyone should be excluded based on their skin nor promoted because of their skin. There are origination and inspiration from and for all regardless of skin color or background. By opening ourselves to things we grow and adapt, otherwise things become stagnant and slow to change.

    Respect to the director for bringing something new and fresh to the world of dance.
    Especially when it is something which will give EVERYONE an equal chance to get into...
    Let's face it, a afro american or african woman will always have to go that much further to get into the world of ballet and contemporary dance when auditions come up because their bodies have always been considered different from those of a traditional "ballet dancer".
    I hope this revitalises the world of dance and gives directors a chance to give dance that welcome twist from the norm.
    Time to go mainstream with Hiplet.
    Word!

    • @megg2826
      @megg2826 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you realize that hiplet is not in any form ballet? Also, it's not just colored women who have it hard, but also white women too. When it comes down to it, it is all about talent, practice and the most minuscule of performances that separates one ballerina from the rest. Yes sometimes race does play a factor into it, but in the end none of it matters when the ballerinas are audtioning with hundereds of other people for the same part.

      Peace and LOVE sickling of the feet is when the foot is not properly turned out. The foot isn’t placed properly and just looks disgusting to look at. A lot of these girls doing these moves had that and also weren’t turned out. Yes, pointe shoes were designed for ballet as said in the video but if they were specifically designed for ballet, then they should stay in ballet. Nothing else. Anything else will ruin the shoe and possibly damage their feet as well
