I got my 2021 two weeks ago and it’s an amazing upgrade. The comfort, stability, tech and safety features are outstanding. Couldn’t be happier so far. Down side, my S60 averaged about 32 mpg combined because I did a lot of highway driving. Now that I’m retired, the XC90 is getting about 16mpg driving around town. Bigger tank. Real world, I’d get 500 miles on a full tank in my S60, I get 350 miles on a full tank in my XC90. Worth it.
Just traded my next/first generation 2016 for a 2021 at the Lisle dealership. This is only the second time I’ve bought the same car twice. Love this car!
Awesome steering wheel design Love how it’s not ugly like the other ones out there The only thing I would change would be the rims and the tires more rubber less wheel
@@DriversOnly And you can’t use the wireless charging if you’re using Apple car play (or those other guys) because it has to be plugged into the USB which dos the charging. I guess a passenger could use the wireless charger.

Why all complaining about how to lift up third row seats from the back?? if you need 3rd row it means you need to charge passengers, so from the doors, ergo, opening passengers doors you can MUST do it. if you need more cargo space then you need to pull down seats, so it is perfect the way they made it.
Real shame they don't offer the D5 anymore. Love that engine and so useful when going to rural parts of Western Australia where 98 Octane petrol can be difficult to find but diesel is always available.
wonderful review, you know so much about the nuances of this car, thanks for educating us. i have seen all your previous reviews on the XC90 and having been an XC90 owner for more than a decade i can see that your reviews are top notch and spot on.
Dealer just told me there’s not been ONE fatality accident in an XC90 since 2002 when it was introduced. Not one fatality in any Volvo model since 2016.
i now own a xc90 recharge extended range t8 and I will say the best suv so far I mean its the best with 455 combined hp and performs like a beast. the luxury is at the top.
I have one of these. I would add two clarifications. It isn't hard to lift the third row back to from the back--although I get that a strap would make it easier. I'm also 6'4", which might make reaching in to pull it up easier. The third row headrest can be obtrusive, but it is easy enough to flip down the headrests when not in use.
I’m 6’3” and wanted to ask how is the leg room since I see the center console might not let taller ppl spread. Does the console bother your right leg/knee/thigh?
Please include the use of voice command for xc90, that way the viewers are aware that they don’t just rely on the infotainment. I have seen a lot of comment that the infotainment is unsafe to use while driving without knowing the purpose of voice command. This is one of the feature a lot of car reviews missed to inform.
I have an XC60 and I have to strongly disagree--the infotainment system is terrible and the reason I wouldn't recommend the car. There is huge delay from starting the car until you can access any controls which is a big deal when*everything* is controlled by that system. Get in on a hot day and you can even change the air. Even worse is sometimes it will load up, but huge lag from taps and you're driving off and the screen finally catches up. Finally, and most concerning, I'd that sometimes I have to shift from Park to reverse and back multiple times just to get the backup cameras to come on. Frustrating to me but may not bother everyone is that the car has no memory for the driving setting you select. I find the car sluggish when not in Dynamic mode; so when running errands you have to change the drive mode everytime you start the car. Can't be locked into that mode and doesn't remember it in the driver profiles. Just mind-bogglingly annoying. Comfortable car, good looking, very safe. Couple software changes and I would highly recommend.
You can set your own driver setting. You have to link it with the key fob u always use. What we do is we name each key fob in the infotainment system. So when I pick the kry fob that I use all the time, as soon as I unlock the car, the setting such as the climate, seat setting will automatically arrange for me.
Volvo was also in the bottom 10 for Consumer Reports, landing at 24th with 38/100 rating for reliability, with the brand's flagship SUV getting the worst rating for reliability.Apr 10, 2020 - Chinese OWNED SINCE 2010
How have the 2021 held up? Any issues with them? I am thinking of upgrading my 2010 XC60 at the beginning the year (2025) to this model year or the 2022. The price is looking attractive on these.
You guys are very lucky, for the Indian markets they started REDUCING the safety features even for the high end XC90 Inscription trim too and we pay a much much higher price than the western world. Which means that they are planning on exiting from this market, as I always thought that SAFETY was THE CORE VALUE OF VOLVO
Yes, the gears hold longer to prevent downshifting in a sporty instance where you would still want the vehicle to be in a higher gear- so you don't have to shift up again. The dynamic actually can come in handy in stop-and-go traffic because of this, preventing more shifting than needed.
Hi, thanks a lot for this excellent review. I am in the process of finalising the purchase of XC90. I have a question about the 3rd row. I did test drive XC90, pilot, Subaru and MDX. I felt XC90 is short on 3rd row legroom and ease of access compared to Pilot although both has been shown to have similar measurements, without borrowing any space from 2nd row. Pilot is way better. Is there something to consider? What do you think?
I'm new to Volvo, and the xc90 in general. I'm thinking I'd like a vehicle like this for my wife and I as we do a lot of long distance trips. One thing I'm wondering about, and what piqued my curiosity, I've seen ads for the xc90 that show the passenger with their seat back, and feet up on what looks like a fold out table or ottoman. None of the reviews I've read or seen so far have mentioned this as an option or standard. I'd love for my passenger to be able to enjoy that level of comfort while on a road trip. Is this just false advertising?
Good Review, buuuuut active bending headlights have been around since this car was launched! Our old V60 from 2012 had that so I don’t think it’s new for this 2021 XC90
Touch screen, menu, submenu, sub-submenu, CRASH. Whatever happened to buttons, levers, and knobs you could operate with motor memory so that you could keep your eyes on the road? Volvo should remember their safety priority.
Snobs usually stick with snobs. That is, German's stick with German's, I know, I am German! However, this car takes a high leap in comparison to the less well-to-do, and boring German autos. Frankly, my uncle worked at M.B. for the last 38-years and knows that the end of a good German auto from M.B. ended back in the 1980"s. The Germans seem to be worried that now, they realize, that for the most part M.B. has been and remains to be a danger to itself and resides asleep at the wheel (metaphorically referenced) terminal lifespan unless things drastically improve.
