    The lock feature is used to lock a compass direction and then you can set a distance. A waypoint is then created at that point. If you want to remember where you car, It's safer to set a waypoint before setting off on your hike and name it, or as someone else said take a geolocated photo of your car ( with the Garmin 650 ) as you leave it,.

    The lock location feature would have been awesome on a few of our hikes. We do not own a gps for hiking but after seeing what these things do I ll put it on our list. Cool vid dude.

      I'll have to do a better demonstration on what it does out in the field.. They are great devices, a little pricey being that cell phones can do about half of it's functions but as a life saving device it's hard to beat. If i could do it again I would have found a deal on a used device, but I still would have gotten it.

      We visit from Australia so for us to use the phone it costs $5 a day and not sure what would work. I really didnt understand what these did till I seen your video. Told the wife about it and she said we will look at getting one for the next trip.

      KianJorry as long as you buy the appropriate 24K maps to use for routing in the areas you are in... you'll be good. The 100K map it comes with shows great detail, and locaiton but won't route you anywhere. It will only tell you where you are, and where you've been and what things are if you click around. The 24K will do all that WITH the 100K and route you as needed on trails or roads. They sell the 24K in Regional maps, usually has 3 or so states in a group. They are worth the money, just don't get the one with the camera, it's not worth the extra cash. No difference in weight but the camera price mark up isn't worth it.

      robalan57 yeah there are a couple different ways you can tag a location with these GPS units but a lot of people just using their phones for that. I like the track back feature a lot though on the Garmin Oregon it's very accurate and gives you a lot of confidence I'm getting back to your car safely

    What's the difference in the activity options in routing, if you choose between say: mountaineering, hiking or car?

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Page maps change, also the dashboard changes. Hiking will have elevation ect,.where driving won't by default unless you add it

    I have a question for you about the 24K maps. Do I also have to have the 100K map installed for the 24K map to work? I will be using an Oregon 600 which only comes with their very basic world map and none of the Topo maps.

      No, the 24K will work with the 100K shut off. You just lose the detail that the 100K offers. You can shut off any of the pre-loaded maps at any time.

    How do I navigate to specific latitude / longitude coordinates?

      James Clark Hit that magnifying glass icon and enter coordinates in a WGS84 Datum, or go to a map and hit a place you want to go and navigate.

    I really found this video quite good, but I think those having difficulty understanding it should know that this builds on basic knowledge of the unit. I suggest watching a video that walks you through each basic function first, then come back to this video, which will help with filling in some of the blanks. My guestion is this. When I track my hikes, my auto pause feature will kick in at weird times while still moving and then not turn back on unless I manually start it. This is a real nuisance and can result in a track that has large portions not recorded and faulty mileage. It works better on a walk since my pace is faster and I keep moving but even at a 3 mile an hour pace, it will pause on me. Are you familiar with this annoyance? Is there something I can do to fix this? Thanks in advance.

      You can turn the auto pause feature off in the system maybe I will make some more videos on the device.

      Urban Outdoorsman Another video would be great. In my research, I had found that there seems to be different GPS models that allow the pause feature to be tweaked according to your speed. So, they could be set NOT to pause unless your speed dropped below a certain preset level. My Oregon 650t does not seem to offer this option that I am aware of, which was why I was wondering if there was another way around this troublesome glitch. I enjoyed your video and look forward to others.
