  • After putting in just above the recommended amount of miles for my first service on my 2023 CFMOTO Ibex 800T it's time for it's first service. I could definitely have taken it to a dealership but what fun would that be? Let's see how it is doing the First 600-mile service here in the shop!

I’ve never let a shop touch my bike for any maintenance. I’m a trained car mechanic that has always had bikes and always kept them well maintained. As for the IBEX, I’ve been watching this bike for months viewing video after video. I own a ‘22 KLR Adventure. I was considering a trade in until my 24 year old son decided that he wouldn’t mind having an adventure bike. That being said that puts my financial limit for another bike at about 13k, not the 20 plus that I was considering. So far I’ve seen nothing but good things about this bike and its Chase’s videos on it that’s helped me decide that this is the bike for me after I turn the KLR over to my son. I live in the northeast so weather sucks right now but come spring time…IT IS ONNNN !

Oil changes are easy. I usually take my bikes in for their initial service so the dealer can catch anything that needs addressed while the bike is still new-ish. I'm glad I did because had I done it myself I might have missed the loose head bolts (well, more like not properly torqued), which explained the vague steering feel. Having the dealer mechanics go over and document everything gave me good piece of mind and let me know what to keep an eye on until it's 9,000 mile service.

Excellent video, Chase. You are definitely more people friendly on video than the other mechanic.

That same filter is also used on the LC8 1290. I changed from Motorex to Motul 7100, and it's been perfectly fine. KTMs drain plug bolt heads are soft as butter. Even torquing to spec, they feel way tight when you go to undo them again.

OC: definitely donthe oil change myself.
Its simple enough and its a good starting point to start wrenching on your own bike.
Also OG Keytag got transferred to the IBEX 🙌🏼😎

I do my own oil changes in the spring because the back up at the stealership is 2 months wait time and $100 of cash for my waiting. Just do it myself and know it's done proper.

3 quarts was right on the money for oil and filter change.
Put in 2 quarts , then start and run the bike for a few seconds , then
add the final quart and you should be good to go. Did mine a few days ago.

Holy crap... 9k is the longest oil change interval I've ever heard of on a bike. Honda has the longest oil change interval of all the Japanese brands at 8k and you should see what conventional oil looks like after 8k miles in a bike. I change my Hondas at 4k just cause its so cheap and easy to do, plus my cb500f burns a bit more oil than I'd like and I attribute that largely to the 8k interval oil changes for the first 100k miles. After that I switched to the 4k oil changes but I'm still using conventional oil in that bike with a half a quart of lucas oil stabilizer mixed in to reduce the oil burning... Nevertheless oil changes are super easy and after 160k miles on the 500, I've changed her oil 26 times now. Definitely no reason to take it to a dealer if you have the know how to do it yourself.
Having done my time as a motorcycle mechanic at a dealer, I can also tell you that I've watched coworkers do some shady things in service. Actually had one guy that had a gallon jug that contained the remnants of every bottle of oil he used on a bike, and if you needed a bit of a top off and your bike was on your lift then that's what went in your bike. Nothing like a little mix of gear oil, 20w-50, 5w-20, 10w-40, 10w-50, 2 stroke, and who knows what other oils to keep your engine running tip top right?

I dont get why people buy a new bike or are near new bike, then skimp by servicing it themselves(or trying to) if you dont have the diagnostics and the skills, why void your warranty, cf moto offers a 3 year warranty if you service it at a dealer, i added a mt 800 to my stable it had 12000ks on it just did the 15000 services, cost me 350 au dollars,, the bike has 20mths warranty left on it wich carried over to me as the 2nd owner, in Australia if you service a bike under warranty yourself you void the warranty

A lot of dealers here in the US actually encourage us to do our own servicing because they tend to be so busy.
Also it doesn't void our warranty here. we have laws against it. Right to repair and all that.
