Every year my dad took us. Fishing on Ash Wednesday. If the weather cooperated. We talked about Lent Good Friday, fasting, changing to be a better person like Christ. My dad loves Lent as much as I do. Thanks Dad. And thanks Jesus

Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan with not even water. So it can be done, but I
personally think it terms of blood sugar and hydration so choose other forms of Lenten practices.

      Colossians 1 About Jesus:
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
      19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
      1 John 5:3
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not burdensome.
      Rev 22:14
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
      THE TEN COMMANDMENTS….
1- THOU SHALT HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME
2- THOU SHALT NOT MAKE UNTO THEE ANY GRAVEN IMAGE
3- THOU SHALT NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THY GOD IN VAIN
4- REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY
5- HONOUR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER
      6- THOU SHALT NOT KILL
7- THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY
      8- THOU SHALT NOT STEAL
9- THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS AGAINST THY NEIGHBOURS
      10- THOU SHALT NOT COVET
Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Hebrews10:26-31- For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God!!..
These few verses unmask deception and reveal idolatry:
The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the works of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them become like them. SO DO ALL WHO TRUST IN THEM. Psalm 135:15-18
      Deuteronomy 4:16
that you do not act corruptly and make an idol for yourselves of any form or shape, whether in the likeness of a male or female,
      Jeremiah 7:18-19 KJV
The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the ¨queen of heaven¨, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger. Do they provoke me to anger? saith the LORD: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces?
Mary and saint worship, Mary the mediatrix and queen of heaven? God cleary told us Jesus is the ONLY mediator between God and mankind. Whoever else you use as mediator or pray to is IDOLATRY.
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.
Saints dont intermediate and dont listen to prayers, they are dead people like you and me, made of flesh and they died, Mary also is one of them, she was a normal woman who gave birth to Jesus and she and other people may not be worshipped.
God declared the dead as the following:
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 For the living know they will die; but the dead do not know anything, nor have they any longer a reward, for their memory is forgotten. 6Indeed their love, their hate and their zeal have already perished, and they will no longer have a share in all that is done under the sun.
If the dead are alive somewhere... then who are the ones Christ will resurrect at his arrival?
*Second commandment (Ex 20:4): Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, ...*
this includes rosary necklaces, Mary and saint statues, Jesus, Mary and saint images, crosses, 'holy relics' and many more items used in worship by most denominations. People bow down before these things, kiss them, pray with them and that is wrong.
Christ is the mediator we pray towards, close the door and pray to him honestly without any items or images, he is the living God and does not share his glory with manmade things.
It is time to return to the old Hebraic faith of Jesus (Yeshua) and do what he did (obey the Fathers commandments and laws). There was no Catholic church or hundreds of denominations each with their own views and opinions back in the days of Jesus and the prophets. Believers had the old testament back then, which is the foundation of all scripture and the key to understand the new testament. Most Cathechism practices like rosary prayers etc are just invented in the 16th century.. first pope existed in 538ad and not in the apostles their days. those things got nothing to do with Jesus, its the traditions and vanities of religious men who went far astray from the Fathers commands.
      Matt 7:22
Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’…
      Berean Standard Bible
Only those who obey Gods commandments will enter the kingdom, there is a large familiar group of people who think they please Jesus but obviously they will be rejected by Him because they denied the commandments.

Thank you for posting the video. It’s a good refresher for all Catholics. (BTW, we usually refer to avoiding meat as “abstaining” and reducing food intake or changing our eating style in general as a “fast”). Most people have forgotten that the Church still “recommends” abstaining from meat on every Friday throughout the year.
🔥“Being Catholic” isn’t just for an hour on Sunday mornings. New life begins at baptism and our goal is unity with God Himself. Dorothy Day once said, “If you don’t learn to enjoy God now you never will.”
📖 A few weeks ago I started “Introduction to the Devout Life” by St. Francis de Sales. I HIGHLY recommend it!

You can add something. You don’t have to necessarily “take something away”. If you add prayers and pray throughout the day, you are sacrificing your own time. That was what I did last lent and I’ve kept it up and it’s changed my life.

"If you add prayers and pray throughout the day, you are sacrificing your own time"
Exactly, too many people focus on the gluttony and lust they are "giving up". The point in fasting is not glorify your own "sacrifice". We need to focus on our prayer and service to God. Fasts should be an excuse to donate the extra* food we are not eating for ~180 days out of the year. ☦

I went Vegan in 2020 and found Change The Food Change The World by Paula Sandin a Catholic Perspective and it has brought me so much closer to God by healing my health and emptying out what wasn’t serving me and living a life of kindness and compassion. I’m just reading my Lent book and it compared Lent to a little Camino for 40 days and carry with you only what you absolutely need. So beautiful. Have a blessed Lent and thank you for your content and sharing with us. 🙏🏻

Vegan/vegetarian Catholic here - since I don't eat meat anyway, on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent, after a morning cup of green tea, I only drink plain water - no tea, no juice, no flavored water, just water. I feel this is the closest I can get to the feeling that omni people feel when they can't eat meat on Fridays.
Before I went vegan, I'll admit that Lenten Fridays were weird for me because I *love* seafood and I'm not a fan of meat (like chicken, beef, etc) so it was supposed to be this penitental time while I was, like, "Yay, my favorites are all on sale!"

I was born and raised Catholic and never heard of eating half meals, that's a very helpful tip. We usually starve ourselves until lunch or starve ourselves at night to only eat two meals on Friday. Now I'll use your tip, divide lunch and eat the other half for dinner 🙂 Also eating seafood or eggs would give me pleasure which would defeat the purpose of the Friday fast so I omit those from meals along with meat, snacks, candy/chocolate and added sugar and honey. It's not easy but it humbles me when I think of how weak I am spiritually because I find it hard to do for 24 hrs once a week and Jesus endured fasting for 40 days & nights.

Remember Prayers during your Fasting. Alms giving is encouraged too. The idea is to get closer to God, it’s not a ritual for its own sake. Getting closer to God is the focus and aim in these abstinence from foods and sins, ill will, pridefulness, prejudices, envy and hatred etc so that we’re not as distracted as usual. More spiritual time for God , less time for bodily desires and our senses.

I have my full meal at lunch rather than dinner. I only have a mini babel cheese for breakfast. I know sweets are forbidden but I have one of those store bought protein shakes as dinner. I don’t think of that as a sweet or dessert. I’m 66 and want to make sure I get enough nutrition.

In 1917 the Latin rite really took away the fast. Traditionally all of Lent you fasted, which was 1 small meal a day of only vegetables with oil. No meat, no dairy. Sundays are not fast days, if they were it'd be 46 days of fasting so in Sundays you may eat. All eastern catholic rites still observe the traditional fast. I'm trying to do traditional fast this year.

@@marinaifollowmyjoy3599 You may want to reread what the Canon law has to say, specifically. This video is correct. One meal, and two smaller meals that should equal the size of the first meal. Technically those two should be smaller than the main meal, but most people eat a lot less anyways on AW and GF, so nobody should be counting grapes. Three equally small meals negates any need to measure. God bless.

Once the Church changed from no meat on Fridays to no meat on a few days a year, I changed. So I no longer worry about the legalese. Giving up a hamburger and replacing it with a pepper and egg sandwich or a deep fried breaded perch fish fry or panko coated pop corn shrimp is no penance for me. I add something instead, as in more meditation time, spiritual reading, and lectio where I open the bible, run my finger to any passage, and then mull over the meaning of that passage. I also love listening to Catholic psalms on Spotify...both vocal and instrumental to keep me in the mood for prayer. Everyone has to find their own niche.

Need to ask quick question as I’m a born and raised Catholic, however, I’m now 65 years old and suffer from some major medical issues making me dependent on my adult children for care. Does the Church say if you’re over a certain age and have lots of medical issues, you are exempt from fasting, but can use your sufferings for redemptive sufferings. Can’t wait to hear from you as this is yet another important resource for Catholics.🙏🙏🙏🙏😇😇😇😇

I once fasted for a day when my parents left to India. It was fulfilling then. Recently, my parents noticed a possible fatty liver. Thus there was no birthday cake. Unexpectedly, my parents all kinds of other restrictions on what foods were served. I could be admonished for eating something from college that did not fit their category. No doctor ever suggested this. I exercise more than anyone else. I perceive that these restrictions will go beyond Lent. When I suggest healthy alternatives to foods with added sugar, my parents think that it is too expensive. Under these circumstances, there is a case to be made that there is no need to make a large daily Lent sacrifice. I have been forced to sacrifice enough already. Unless one lives an isolated life, it is hard for any family member expect another to completely abstain from anything forever in a society full of all kinds of foods.

I prefer to be like Christ as much as possible, and just go for the water on my fast . Do a fast! Most of us are able to do it. I’ve done it for a five days people I’ve done it for longer. It’s not easy but it’s totally possible and actually extremely good for your body not to eat so I can repair itself on many levels as well as get closer to God! Amen!

Sometimes fasting from meat or eating less is too easy. As I am usually eating small becouse I am not so much into food. I hear from nun that is good to fast from the things we are bound with like using internet or TV, or other things that make God second. So fasting is about to remove the things that block connection with God.

  • @philfrank5601
    @philfrank5601 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

For anyone confused, it's okay. The rules for fasting and abstinence have changed over the decades, and different cultures do things differently. In the Latin Rite, Heather is correct: according to Canon Law, only two days per year require fasting (eat less) and abstinence (refrain from meat). Some cultures and traditions included dairy when abstaining, but according to the teachings found in the modern Catholic Church, only meat products are not to be eaten. Still, many Catholics choose to abstain from meat and dairy on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, as a practice of further piety. Just read the official documents if you are in doubt, and be aware that many choose to abstain from a lot more than is actually required from them by the Catholic Church. Don't let the rules get between the purpose of fasting and abstaining on these days, however...because that's what's truly important. God bless you all.

She probably mentioned refraining from eating sweets because they are not in the spirit of fasting ... They are associated with feasting and celebration and do not fit into Lent. However there is no Church "law" that forbids sweets. But we should not be looking to do the bare minimum
