Honestly though prime Westbrook from like around 2012 to 2017/18 that was legit dynamic , his MVP 2016/17 season was just unbelievable , that was spectacular to watch

Since they tell the story because most people don't actually watch the games or even look at the stats that before this season he had an over 70% winning percentage when he had triple doubles. The fact early in his career him and Durant led that young Thunder team to the NBA finals. Shit the media has shit on Kareem for being "surly" with them and he is one of the greatest and most accomplished player in NBA history.

@Honest Westbrick Fan #1 Nah I actually did the research myself looking at his triple double game logs myself because I kept hearing the "media" who is obviously biased against him saying that his triple doubles don't lead to winning yet I kept seeing wins in the boxscore when he had them. In addition if I would've known Jimmy did the work it would've saved me some time. Nice try tho.

Westbrook used to have an extremely reliable midrange pull up. I genuinely have no clue how it got so terrible.
He never had an "extremely reliable midrange pull up", he has always been a dog shit shooter. He shot 36% from the midrange in his MVP year.

Russ’ seasons with the wizards and rockets were really underrated, after becoming a 2nd option under james harden he still averaged 27/8/7. All star first option numbers while also playing with james harden averaging 34 a game. that was a CRAZY backcourt. And russ still made it back to play in the playoffs after having Covid and going a while without playing. The wizards went from being the worst team in the LEAGUE to being a 8th seed while russ still averaging 22/11/11. And he was considered washed these years??? No washed player ever ever put up those numbers. You attach those stats to a different player and they get all the praise in the world. ik russ had a rough season with the lakers and there are flaws in his game but to consider him not even a NBA talent is crazy especially considering 18/7/7 is a BAD season for him. everyone says russ doesnt play winning basketball but james harden, cp3, dame, etc does even though they had the same opportunities playing with great players and still get bounced out of the playoffs and havent won anything. I hate the narrative everyone is giving russ. He has regressed but hes still a good player and picked it up towards the end of the season while barely having AD around.
Also forgot to add something about russ being underrated in houston, he was top 10 in MVP VOTING PLAYING WITH JAMES HARDEN AS A SECOND OPTION
Well to be fair he doesn’t get out of the 1st round compared to those guys even with talent, at least as a 1st option. Usually he needs to be the second option to do so. As for the rockets he had an amazing season that was great to watch during the regular season (I say this as a rockets fan). But we all knew for him to have that great of a season they had to hamper the team by trading Capela. Freeing up space for him to operate. I’m not saying russ isn’t a great player but his criticisms are warranted wether you like him or not. Which makes it so frustrating to watch when you really just want him to win.

Westbrook either good screwed over by injuries, got screwed over because he got put into rosters he didn’t fit into, or the rare moments when he just chokes. In Westbrook's prime his one man army style of play was amazing to watch. He can be the best player on a 47 win team but his style of play can't lead a team to over 50 wins a season.

@@bjr0467 Westbrook is an inefficient shooter with poor basketball IQ. His usage rate takes the ball away from other shooters and slows down ball movement. He contributes nothing on offense off the ball, like setting screens or making runs to draw out defenders. He is unfocused on defense, a natural athlete like him should at least be a good defender.

Prime Westbrook was definitely a force to be reckoned with. He always had a bit of a ball dominance problem though as he needs to be with the ball a lot to accomplish his triple doubles, which imo can hinder teammates quite a bit. When he was the main guy and at his peak in OKC it worked out for him. But playing with other stars has kind of exposed him as needing to sacrifice other player's scoring to get up his own, and as time has gone on and he has lost some of his scoring prowess, it's become less and less viable to have him ball hog since his output is so reduced.
I think this has just come to a head with the Lakers. I respect his accomplishments, but I never saw this trade as being a good one since he would need to adapt a lot to be efficient with not only 1, but 2 main scorers alongside him
And then there's the turnovers......
Westbrook played with KD, Paul George, Bradley Beal, Harden, Oladipo, LeBron, A.D, Steven Adams & ibaka (in his prime). Dude was a beast but Scott Brooks never taught Westbrook discipline.

I think Hakeem had a more sudden fall. In 1996 or 97 he was averaging 23/10 then next season he suddenly only averaged 16/8 while almost playing the same number of possessions

Actually he changed his game _significantly_ . But people won't give him any credit.
He was the league best playmaker by _far_ last season.
He was the league clutches player _far_ last season as well.
He added an entire dimension of post moves he didn't have before. Which is what athletic players do as they age, like Wade.
He's also improved his 3pt shot, changed his mechanics to a one-motion shot, but hasn't developed it consistently yet. It will come. Last 20 games he shot 42% from 3pt range.
A down season for sure but 18/7/7 is trash? Not to mention Russ was adjusting to a lot this year especially woth Lebron. 3rd stars on Lbj teams have always suffered at first. Just ask love and bosh. Now theyre asking a GUARD to adjust. Russ was trying to change his game to an off ball player and in the last like 12 games he was pretty good.

nothing has changed except the fact that he’s not the first option anymore. every flaw he has now was a flaw he had back on the Thunder. it was just less visible because he overshadowed it with highlights and dominance. Westbrook was a good defender when he tried, otherwise he was a dud. he made dumb passes, he stat padded, and it’s clear having him as your #1 guy wouldn’t lead you to a chip. He had the ball more on the Thunder, therefore he stuffed more stats
It was also less visible because the league wasn't as efficient 5-10 years ago.
TS% hit a low point in 2012 at 52.7%. Last year was 57.2%.

That and injuries quickened his downfall. He relied a lot on his athleticism and speed. He's no longer that scary player because he can't run past defenders at will like he used to. He never really was a great shooter so that stands out a lot more and his confidence has gone down the drain.

He was "the bigger name" literally for only 1 or 2 seasons, when KD left and when he joined the wizards. PG and Harden were the better players and it was not even close.
The GOAT of every 2K players play style! Sometimes his style was just ugly. Forcing an assist, ball hog the ball until last seconds on shot clock. Have Steven Adams box out for rebounds. Dribble up the floor everytime and miss transition points because his full court pass was just inaccurate. Bricking 3 pointers and jumpshots because his release doesn't match with his jump
There’s no Doubt in my mind that if Russell Westbrook continues to play like this , with the way he’s been playing ,no team would even want him in the next 2-3 years

Magic Johnson and Jason Kidd they play great defense unlike Westbrook who doesn’t put 100% of his effort on it. He had the body and athleticism to be a great defender for his position.

A triple-double is a lot less impressive when you lead the league in turnovers, steal rebounds, and shot 43% from the field.

Not when your on a team with abysmally bad spacing due to an extreme lack of 3 point shooting and playmaking. Have y'all actually played ball yourself playing in a team in which nobody can shoot 3's and everybody just crowds the paint because they know you're the only threat? Maybe y'all never werent good enough to be on that position and thus dont understand how incredibly hard it is to get efficient points and assists like that.
He shot 43% which is literally 1% off the average fieldgoal percentage of the all time best PG's who at least scored over 18 points in their careers, which is 44%. Curry the best shooter ever averages 47% for god sakes. The bigger the player the higher the efficiency and the less hard shots have to be. I'm always baffled how people don't understand. There are literally zero PG's in history that averaged more than 20 points on 50% being 6'3 or below, zero. Even if I'd add 15 or more, Maurice Cheeks is the only player.
Also Westbrook supposedly steals rebounds which is about a 40 year old fastbreak tactic to have the big man box out and have a big guard or a player with a matchup mismatch so the big man can instantly run the court at the same time as the PG instead of being late. Doncic does it, Morant does it coincidentally, with Adams, Lebron and Davis, Bosh and Love did it and even Josh Hart at the Pelicans does.
What about offensive rebounds in which he's second all time of all PG's with Magic a 6'9 PG and Jason Kidd a 6'5 PG? He also with Magic averages the highest offensive rebound average of all time with 1.7 per game in his career.
That's more than the grand majority of SF's like Lebron, KD, Butler(a known great offensive rebounder for his size), Kawhi, George etc who are all at least 6'8 except for Kawhi who is 6'7.
So how is he stealing offensive rebounds? I always wondered why nobody ever said anything about him 'stealing rebounds' when he played with KD, Ibaka, Kanter and Adams of which the first 3 all averaged at least 8 rebounds but Westbrook averaged 8 himself. Where was all the chatter of him, 'stealing rebounds' then?
He averaged 8.6 rebounds and when Ibaka and KD a guaranteed 16 rebounds left, he's 'stealing rebounds because of those 16 rebounds they left, he grabbed 1.4 more.

That’s amazing In and of itself . But he’ll always be known as a great player who gets in his own way until he has a better attitude.
Russ seems like the kind of guy that would retire instead of settling for a bench role or a pay cut. I see him playing maybe 2 or 3 more seasons max. After next season, I'm not so sure he will have many offers. This season wasn't good for his image and the league doesn't care about your resume only what you have done lately.

Yeah but he started getting going at the worst time. Lakers needed him to step up all year and especially when AD went out he was a negative for the team 80% of the games. I think what made him such a bad fit on the Lakers was that he fed into the things that made the Lakers so bad. Poor shooting, no defense and high TOs. As his athletic ability declines his ability will only get worse as that’s what made his game what it is
If he could be this efficient for an entire season, sure. How many TO's did he average.
But, even Julius Randle had an anomalous highly efficient season last year. Look at where he is now.
Great potential squandered by low basketball IQ. The fact that he never got out of the first round with OKC after kd left and players like oladipo and Sabonis became all stars immediately after leaving him tells you everything you need to know about the dude's value
That's bs bruh. Oladipo was already a high pick and got into his 5th year and got a leading role. His last half of the season for the Thunder he was already averaging 18 points after a slow start.
Him averaging 5 points more with 5 more shot opportunities is as much of a shocker as Harden who went to the Rockets and instantly became a star. Its not because of Westbrook or KD that he became a star, it's because he already had the potential.
Domantis took another 2 years to develop in a fringe all star player and averaged 11 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists his first season with Indiana and 14, 9 and 3 the year after.
He was literally a 19 year old rookie with the Thunder bruh his first season i the league.
Sabonis was an all star 3 years after leaving Russ and Oladipo was young as well.

Russ never really improved any other facet of his game. Never improved his jumper, never learned to play at a different pace, and never learned to play without the ball in his hands. If he would’ve done that he could be playing at a solid level today.
Russ today reminds me of Iverson post-Denver (Detroit and Memphis) and Carmelo Anthony post-NY (OKC, HOU). Washed, but doesn't know it and refused to come off the bench.
disagree with iverson , he came off a great season in denver and was traded to detroit and they never let him play most of the time since they wanted to tank but when he played he was still good at the time. He probably wasted his remaining prime in detroit falling off after getting to memphis.
Great video. I feel like we should blame OKC for most of that. Russ coming from college as a defender SG, OKC turned him into a PG for no godamn reason, even if Harden was way better passer and PG back then than Russ. Putting Westbrook, early in his career, into a role like a slasher/ defender and mainly a cutter would have been the best version of Russ, but OKC spoiled him giving him an all around role, when he didnt have the enough IQ to play like that.
Very interesting opinion and that makes sense and for someone with his energy you cannot force into a passer first PG role, especially if his passing game simply is not good enough. It was mediocre cause he was fast but he has no finesse like other PGs. With a good PG next to him he would have developed differently, but noone is to blame. With Harden, KD and ibaka next to him you have to play the PG as the smallest one, especially that talented.

He tried to do too much bc of being in La, playing with bron, the injuries by the rest of the team and he never really got a chance to settle in his new role and his role changed alot throughout the season and he was forced to shoot way more threes then he was capable of and the expectations weighed alot on him whether he admits it or not, it was clear. He is clearly not the same Russ and not worth 40+ mil a year but he is not some bum. If the Lakers keep him and build the team right they can be successful and AD is gonna have to play Center. He has to and he has to play at least 60 games. He did it in 2019-2020 so with only like what 60 games in the past 2 seasons and a full offseason he has no excuses. I think they should trade Russ if they can but if they can't it won't be terrible, they CAN make it work. This year has to be a big learning experience and they have to use it
He had the Energy! As a volume shooter to make 50 points and a tripple double, even with a few assists and rebounds given you need that mamba mentality to go 100% and for this i give him big respect. The more you do on the court the harder it gets to maintain a high percentage. He never learned to play with less energy but higher % though which hurts him now his prime ended.
Prime Russ was a stat padder, he was just a very good one surrounded by teammates who allowed it
2x scoring champion, 3x assists champion, led the league in p.e.r., led league in vorp, finished top 5 MVP voting 5 times and won one of those, 2nd in scoring amongst PG's in NBA history, avgs 25/8/7 for the playoffs, Russ is absolutely without a doubt one of the all-time greats and I didn't even mention his triple doubles

Westbrook and lebron started on the same foot. Lebron spent his time chasing championship and developing a slower pace game and jumpshot in case he aged.
Now nobody would even leave lebron open for 3s.
Westbrook spent his time stats chasing. And now that russ have aged he have no skills/moves to play the game slow or other way since he have no jumpshots or moves that work while playing slow.
Most of his shots are wideopen but he still bricks and airballed them.
Westbrook stats is amazing(only regular season) but it is useless in playoffs when compared to players who actually wants to win.

Regression for someone like Russ is inevitable at his stage of his career. He's 6'3 and 200lb, has averaged a triple double 4 times, jumping 4 feet in the air and going coast to coast.
He’s the ultimate stat ladder. He simply won’t do anything if it doesn’t lead to points, rebounds, or assists. He really could careless about wins and losses, he even mentioned averaging a triple double in his exit interview in a year where lakers won 33 games.

His offensive IQ has always been subpar, specially in the clutch. He is the ultimate anti-team player.

Russel Westbrook will be in the textbook of basketball as an example for how stats can be easily manipulated as long as you have nice teammates.
But at least for that 2016-17 season, he tried to carry this team offensively. Yes, he was still inefficient, slacks on defense, steal rebounds, and is sometimes so obvious that he's stat-chasing at times, but considering that team had no other scoring threat and only defense to bank on, they weren't supposed to win 47 games with that team. His playstyle may not be helpful to all his teammates, but for that season, it did help them get to that spot

Comparing Westbrook's 2016-17 season to Chris Paul's 2019-20 season in terms of success will favor Paul especially knowing that the 2019-20 Thunder were supposed to tank then and instead pushed the Rockets to seven in the first round. Nevertheless, knowing Westbrook's style is inefficient and does hold back a team to being at their possible peak, that 16-17 was the best season his playstyle worked and you can at least commend him for being confident in himself to a fault

Here is a key point you're missing: The best NBA play by far is: transition offense. Better than 3pt shooting, better than w/e you can come up with.
Guess which player on your team will raise your transition scoring opportunities from bottom in the league to the top 3 when added to your roster?

Why? It's called statistical expectation. The first player (assuming 2pt shots) produces about 1.68 points per game.
The second one produces about 14.08 points per game.
This is excluding of course, drawn fouls.

Adams can get 15+ rebounds a game but instead helps his team get rebounds. That’s not Westbrook’s “fault”, that’s Adams being a winning player.
