The video description is spot on. I grew up with Dragon Ball Z and it definitely has valid criticisms and is by no means perfect, but it's always going to be my all-time favourite. There's definitely many better written shows out there, but it just has a special place in my heart that no other series can match and that's how it will always be no matter what anyone says.

Yamcha would be the most powerful character in so many animes. Peak Yamcha could easily blow up a planet if he wanted to. The thing is that the rest of the cast is stronger than him, but put Yamcha on Naruto, One Piece, Attack on Titan... And he can just use a Kamehameha to destroy the strongest enemy.
Couldn't have described this feeling any better... not that Super is bad, but.. it just doesn't match the same atmosphere as Z gave, and I'm sure it's 90% because of Goku being too goofy and characters now getting random / invisible power-ups...

I love dragon ball z because when I was getting bullied at school I watched it for hope. I remember seeing Goku vs Perfect Cell and saying I want to be able to defend myself. Which I did because Goku inspired me to do martial arts. I related to Vegeta more because as a kid I felt that the world was against me and I couldn't get what I want which is the same as him. Vegeta wants to be number 1 but can't. A lot of people are emotionally connected to their favorite anime, so it's more than just nostalgia.

Yo goku was a like a role model for me when I was comin' up. Somedays were so damn bad, I wished Goku was my dad. You can't take away Dragon Ball emotional connection from those of us who grew up with the thing. Sure it may not be the "best anime" in the production sense of it. But on a spiritual and individual level, that shit was hella lit. I grew up a better man, because of the values I learned from Dragon Ball. 1. Always take care of your loved ones if you can. 2. Try to be good, never fail to be kind. 3. Take care of your own body, as it is your temple.
Yea dragon ball is good and I personally love it since I watched I grew up with it. Hell I even enjoyed dragon ball super. Still can't say it's one of the best anime though. It does have its issues. No one is saying you cant enjoy it and hold it dear to your heart though. I enjoy McDonalds sometimes even though the food isnt 5 star.

Train hard, enjoy life, and protect your loved ones. What more philosophy do you need than that? DBZ hits so hard because it rings at the core of being a man. Other shounen touch on similar themes, but none is as pure and deep as Dragon ball.
I used to wait a week to watch a 30 minute episode of DBZ before soccer practice. I remember watching en episode during the Frieza vs Goku fight on Namek. There were 15 minutes of commercials, 10 minutes of Goku yelling and powering up and maybe 5 minutes of dialogue and fighting. Still nothing beats the excitement of waiting for that next Saturday 😂
I would have hated to watch dbz weekly. I caught up before super was out but didn't even know it was out until episode 50. It was the first anime I've had to wait and watch weekly. I watched it weekly from episode 50. I'm currently watch one piece weekly. Such a pain lmao

I know Dragonball Z has some issues with the plot, and many shows that have come out since its release have improved on what Dragonball Z did in many ways. However, the characters and themes of Dragonball Z are so strong, they hold a special place in my heart that I do not think any show can replace.
@Pythonista nope, as a young boy I loved the themes of, Hard work and Training can overcome adversity. Everyone talks about how OP the character are but they EARNED IT! years of dedication and backbreaking training to get that power. Everyone had some special talent but they trained it beyond their limits to achieve godhood. I still like to go back and watch it for those themes. Current anime with OP characters skip all the training and themes for the idea of power fantasies. then everyone downplayed DB to that level as well.

Dragonball owes it's existence to Kung Fu movies, Journey to West, Akira Toriyama's humor, his editors, his wife, and the author of Saint Seiya, Masami Kurumada. Its great in own right and changed the anime landscape going forward, but even it has flaws.

It will always be the best to me. DBZ is probably the biggest reason I even like anime today, and it still entertains me, which most shows from my childhood don't. I've seen so many good anime from other genres now, but DBZ just hits different.
Surely dragon ball isn't perfect nor best but it's still a masterpiece for me till this day cuz it set a standard for fiction in it's time.....(and when i say it's a masterpiece i'm not implying that it's the best in the world or the best anime ever, but still something everyone atleast enjoyed at some point in their life)
That's the thing. People confuse "masterpiece" and "pioneer". Dragonball and Dragonball Z 100% deserve respect as pioneers for the genre. But writing and the formula have evolved while Dragonball chose to stay the same. staying the same isn't even inherently bad but people need more than the bare minimum to enjoy a story nowadays. DBS is just so damn predictable & boring
This is literally my music teacher, after he told me he watched DBZ I asked him if he watched Naruto and he said no because characters in Naruto were too weak, I looked at him like "really bruh?", then said Naruto had way better fights and stuff and he said "but Goku just way stronger".

DBZ does a good job of keeping people entertained. Also it’s been running longer than the Simpsons yet it’s stayed more true to the original than shows that Run more than 7+ years. That’s about it. Oh also Vegeta encouraged me to lose 15+ pounds as I saw that even though he thought he was the best, being in second place is the worst. It’s always better to strive to be your best self even when the odds are stacked against you. Gohan also encouraged me.

If you look at dbz critically NOW that your older at least half of the show contains nothing of substance philosophically. Nothing wrong with that but dont make it seem like it was ahead of there time in terms of characterization, plot development, deeper themes and thought provoking discussions. All of that came from vegeta and trunks. Everyone else plateaued in development...
It may be nostalgia, but DBZ is classic/legendary, it was the foundation for so many animes, so of course it has flaws - it was one of the first and all the new animes can learn from it and be better (in fact the new animes should be better, they had all these years to improve writing, plot development, pacing etc). It's like comparing Atari and PS5 and saying PS5 is better than Atari - well no shit lol, time has changed and improved. That being said, I still enjoy watching DBZ today, and ya DBZ power level is still untouchable.... which means it's the best anime lololol
Ironically, plenty of animes surpass DB's power level (The most famous example probably being Gurren Laggann) And don't forget Cowboy Bebop in all this, IIRC it too was influential, right alongside Dragon Ball I think.
Considering it actually inspired so much mangakas and the global influence it had around the globe, I don't think it's purely nostalgia to admit it's a classic, just fax.

I grew up watching this on VHS tapes I borrowed from my friend. And then I remember waiting for the new season to come out. It was a childhood experience. That's what made DBZ amazing. Yes it was flawed but that's 99% of entertainment. Just enjoy the show. Plus, you have to love the thing that inspired DBZ: Abridged.

@@zenith5048 predictable plot is something ingrained in shounen, so dbz having some isn’t a problem and even then, it’s a pretty unpredictable show considering it’s age. Pacing problems is also a problem ingrained in shounen, even shows that people consider peak fiction like one piece and hxh have pacing problems. Let’s also not forget that for dragon balls case, the pacing problem doesn’t really exist since even the filler is enjoyable for most people. Pikkon and turles are still super people characters in dragon ball and broly and gogeta were so popular that they eventually became canon, you don’t get that in most shounen.
It's way less pervasive than the "dbz is the best anime" argument though. A lot of people will admit to enjoying Redo of Healer, but very very few will unironically call it the best.

I love dragon ball z because when I was getting bullied at school I watched it for hope. I remember seeing Goku vs Perfect Cell and saying I want to be able to defend myself. Which I did because Goku inspired me to do martial arts. I related to Vegeta more because as a kid I felt that the world was against me and I couldn't get what I want which is the same as him. Vegeta wants to be number 1 but can't. A lot of people are emotionally connected to their favorite anime, so it's more than just nostalgia.

Yo goku was a like a role model for me when I was comin' up. Somedays were so damn bad, I wished Goku was my dad. You can't take away Dragon Ball emotional connection from those of us who grew up with the thing. Sure it may not be the "best anime" in the production sense of it. But on a spiritual and individual level, that shit was hella lit. I grew up a better man, because of the values I learned from Dragon Ball.

I used to wait a week to watch a 30 minute episode of DBZ before soccer practice. I remember watching en episode during the Frieza vs Goku fight on Namek. There were 15 minutes of commercials, 10 minutes of Goku yelling and powering up and maybe 5 minutes of dialogue and fighting. Still nothing beats the excitement of waiting for that next Saturday 😂

Back in 1991 we didn't have super cool anime fights scenes, power ups, transformations, and overall intense stories like Dragon ball z, it broke ground for anime. People didn't even need to like anime or know what anime was to like Dragon ball z

Everyone talks about how OP the character are but they EARNED IT! years of dedication and backbreaking training to get that power. Current anime with OP characters skip all the training and themes for the idea of power fantasies. then everyone downplayed DB to that level as well.

It will always be the best to me. DBZ is probably the biggest reason I even like anime today, and it still entertains me, which most shows from my childhood don't. I've seen so many good anime from other genres now, but DBZ just hits different.

DBZ might be a series with numerous problems but let's be real for alot of kids who grew up with it, it taught alot of us life lessons that we'll always take with us for the rest of our lives. Also for alot of us DBZ was the first show we ever watched with stakes lol
How to be an ass hole, you can beat the bad guy into being humble if you jump him?, have faith enough in your 13yro son to save the world because you didnt plan on the main villain being that strong. I love DBZ but for the life lessons you might as well just watch one piece.
like what???? the main character is obsessed with fighting to the point of insanity, a pickle raised his son better than him. The entire plot of the show comes down to goku nearly getting beat up then powering up for 1000 episodes
If you look at dbz critically NOW that your older at least half of the show contains nothing of substance philosophically. Nothing wrong with that but dont make it seem like it was ahead of there time in terms of characterization, plot development, deeper themes and thought provoking discussions. All of that came from vegeta and trunks. Everyone else plateaued in development...

It may be nostalgia, but DBZ is classic/legendary, it was the foundation for so many animes, so of course it has flaws - it was one of the first and all the new animes can learn from it and be better (in fact the new animes should be better, they had all these years to improve writing, plot development, pacing etc). It's like comparing Atari and PS5 and saying PS5 is better than Atari - well no shit lol, time has changed and improved. That being said, I still enjoy watching DBZ today, and ya DBZ power level is still untouchable.... which means it's the best anime lololol
Ironically, plenty of animes surpass DB's power level (The most famous example probably being Gurren Laggann)
And don't forget Cowboy Bebop in all this, IIRC it too was influential, right alongside Dragon Ball I think.

I grew up watching this on VHS tapes I borrowed from my friend. And then I remember waiting for the new season to come out. It was a childhood experience. That's what made DBZ amazing. Yes it was flawed but that's 99% of entertainment. Just enjoy the show.
Plus, you have to love the thing that inspired DBZ: Abridged.

The fact that Internet is private and also accessing a legal website is private and has a fee, anime nowadays simply does not have the impact on the GENERAL population like in the past.

@@zenith5048 predictable plot is something ingrained in shounen, so dbz having some isn’t a problem and even then, it’s a pretty unpredictable show considering it’s age.
Pacing problems is also a problem ingrained in shounen, even shows that people consider peak fiction like one piece and hxh have pacing problems. Let’s also not forget that for dragon balls case, the pacing problem doesn’t really exist since even the filler is enjoyable for most people. Pikkon and turles are still super people characters in dragon ball and broly and gogeta were so popular that they eventually became canon, you don’t get that in most shounen.
DBZ may not be the best anime, but it is certainly the one that will stick with us the most.
Honestly want it to be erased from my memory considering how bad it gets at times with the characters being the same

I was one of those younger anime fans who never grew up with dragon ball and always thought that only meat heads could like that show but after i started watching the show out of curiosity, i started realizing how deep and truly rich the story is... it's genuinely one of my favorite animes now and i was a hater before 😅
