    The wrecked Guy shown at 5:39 was destroyed by advancing SS forces near Esquelbecq, about 20km South of Dunkirk in 1940. The commander of the Guy was Piers Edgcumbe, who was killed with the driver, Leonard Webber after they abandoned the vehicle and fought a last stand in a nearby farmhouse. Recently, due to the work of a number of people, Piers Edgcumbe now has a known grave.

    Of all the amazing resources of the Tank Museum, David Fletcher MBE is incomparable! Thank you again and as always, Sir!
    On a far less important note, is it fair to say that the unreliability of the Guy was a function of an underpowered engine being stressed in an extremely hot environment over difficult terrain?

    • @foamer443
      @foamer443 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      More like it is "fair to say that the unreliability of the Guy was a function of", "Right we just got that armoured car contract, so send the lad around with a note that we need 50 of their cheapest 4 banger engines." And no effort to see another better power plant would fit in the same space.
      In fact it would not surprise me to learn the engine compartment/vehicle was designed specifically around that engine as they were so used to using them.
      Right blinders in place, lets design something.

    I'd forgotten about 'Phantom, aka ‘A’ Squadron, GHQ Liaison Regiment. Their work was naturally little reported but the unit was known for its CO, Lt Col David Niven, who had returned from America at the outbreak of war and re-enlisted, the only British actor to do so. He went through the new commando course before being appointed to this SIGINT/recce role.

    Honestly, I think someone needs to do a proper history of welding in Armored Fighting Vehicles. That would be a great vehicle for exploring the complexities of many national economies going into the War, perhaps dispelling some persistent myths about just how easy it is for a modern nation to actually modernize its arms.
