This is what MLB needs to do more. Uploading full classic games, and especially when the moments make sense. The 81 World Series this week makes sense, but the passing of Fernando Valenzuela makes tons of sense for younger fans to see how great he was in 1981.
We'll never see the likes of that again...Fernando battled and battled through tight situations and got out of them hurling 149 pitches total for the complete game win. Amazing for any pitcher, but for a 20-year-old rookie in The World Series?
After the news of Fernando's passing last night, i was looking for this and could only find clips. I'm glad you posted this in its entirety. 🙏 Rest in peace Fernando.
I’m 29 years old and this is such a treat to watch. This game is 14 years before I was born the only people I know on the field are dusty baker and Dave rhigetti because I’m a giants fan. Super cool to see these teams and learn about some legends I didn’t know about
As a Yankee fan, Fernandomania was amazing in the early 80s, while I was in high-school, after winning in 77,78, I wasn't too upset with Fernando and Dodgers winning in 81, miss that era 😊.
I got to see him at the stadium. He was spectacular, often times the only bright spot on a mediocre team. That entire period when he was going to the all star game year after year the Dodgers wre trying to rebuild after Garvey Cey and Lopes left. It took them until 1988 to get it together and by then Fernando had been over used. (Typical Lasorda).
Descansa en paz, Fernando. No habrá otro beisbolista mexicano como tú. Gracias por todas las satisfacciones que le diste a Mexico y a los Dodgers, del que soy aficionado gracias a ti. Duele mucho tu partida.
I was 9 years old and in little league when they played this game, we loved Fernando not only because he was great, but also because the dodgers station in Los Angeles, KTTV channel 11, broadcasted all of Fernando's starts on TV, as it was much different back then and hardly any home games were televised.
We lost the best pitcher of the early 80'1 in Fernado Valenzuela May he rest in peace. And let it be known Fernando brought the Latino community to the Dodgers and brought a sweet taste to what was bitter the Dodgers wouldn't have the fan base they have with him "If you have a sombrero throw it to the sky" Vin Scully Now let's watch greatness
Yes, it absolutely was a must win. This was Fernando's most important performance and win of his career. It shifted the momentum. The Dodgers ended up winning four in a row to take the Series.
That year, as a youngster in jr. high, Fernando gave me and others so many thrills and happy moments. He instilled a feeling of hope and positivity in me. Thank you Fernando. Rest in Peace.
Six time All Star. 1.98 ERA in the post season. Silver Slugger winner. Golden Glove winner. Shut down the Reggie Smith Era Yankees. Massive cultural icon, especially for us Latinos. He';s a HOF must. He shouldn't be punished because Lasorda over used him. I'll bet it's a bunch of East Coast sports writers keeping him out.
As a dodgers fan idc what anyone says it’s really anyone’s World Series in 2024. Both teams made it to this point by being the best in their respective region. As much as I want the dodgers to win it won’t be an easy feat for either team.
I still can't believe Fernando Valenzuela passed away at 63 years young. Rest in Peace "El Toro." Now you're up there playing ball with Tommy, Don Drysdale, Roy Campanella, Tim Crews, Steve Howe, and all the Dodger legends who have passed on with Vinny announcing. Fernando Valenzuela belongs in Cooperstown and should have been inducted years ago.
My dad was telling me that he played the whole 9 innings and I said “nah bullshit” and he looked at me with the biggest straight face I’ve seen Impressive what a legend
The game today was a classic, matchup, (regardless of preference) and will go down as a gem. Extra Innings Down by 1 Intentional Walk 2 outs /bad ankle Edman gets it going Grand Slam. What a game. Rest in peace 34, and thank you (all teams), and for your passion. ✨♾️⚾️🧢
I can truly relate to this comment- I used to live in Los Angeles back in the 80's. LAPD used to give out baseball cards From their cars. I would always for a Fernando card...
I totally relate to your feeling. I was 4 when my Dad & Uncle took me to my first Dodger game in 1966 to see Koufax pitch (their idea of babysitting). Vin Scully was practically the narrator of my life growing up, as his voice always filled our home coming from the tv or radio. I was one of many Dodger fans going to Dodger Stadium with my little transistor radio in hand so we could hear Vin better describing what we were seeing with our eyes. Whenever I’m having a blah day, I will stream a Dodger game from the past and the minute I hear Vin’s voice all becomes right with the world. Those days were the best indeed.
A Champion gets it done even though he doesn't have his best stuff! That was Fernando "El Toro" Valenzuela in this game that the Dodgers needed so bad to turn momentum around & beat the mighty Yankees. Fernando was the true definition of a champ.
what an awesome play at 12:38. he was struggling and needed to throw a strike. runners going and lopes still gets that ball off with winfield trying to get in the way. hurtful looking stretch by garvey at the end. the bullpen started getting warm at 12:32 from tv shot. I see that he threw 8 2/3's on the Blue Monday Oct. 19th game and he is throwing game 3 of WS Oct. 23rd. So awesome.
You know when I heard the sportscasters speaking, I immediately thought to myself, that sounds like Howard Cosell 🎤 what a flashback, my dad 😇 watched boxing with good ole Cosell ringside 🥊
What a different world! "Cey led the Dodgers in home runs this year - with 13." It shows what kind of dominance pitchers had, making Fernando's year all the more incredible.
Perhaps Fernando's most important performance and win of his career as a Dodger. It shifted the momentum. Dodgers would win four in a row to take the series. Go Dodgers on Friday vs them Yanks. El Toro will be watching from above. Gracias por todo, Fernando. 🙏

Without him dodgers are not nearly the worldwide team. He literally brought Mexicans and Latin American people to the game. Dodger stadium was built on their land so it wasn’t till he was there that they became such a huge team. Jaime Spanish broadcast when he pitched blared loud at the stadium over vinnies broadcast. He was on the 88 team also but his arm was gone from all those complete games. Glad the dodgers honored him in 2023. He’s the only numbered retired not in the hof at Chavez.
In the interview after the game, Ron Cey didn't talk about his big home run or diving catch, but instead praised Fernando in his gutsy performance. The Penguin was a class act and team player.
In case anyone is curious why The Yankees wore a black armband on their left sleeve? It's in honor of Yankee great catcher Elston Howard who passed away in late 1980... The Dodgers should recognize Fernando's passing as well with the traditional circular black patch with Fernando's number 34 on their sleeve.
I remember watching this and how proud my family was that he was from Mexico. I was really hoping to see him return to the World Series, but if you want to hear the Gods laugh, tell them your plans. Travel peacefully, El Toro.
