    I still think that HS2 should continue on with the extension towards Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and the rest of Northern England.

    As ever, a great video that fills in some gaps of knowledge well. That map of the delta at the end looks very interesting. Do you know if upgrades to Moor St (my fav station in England) are still going ahead as planned and, if so, do you think you'll make a video on that one day?

    • @Rail_Focus

      I believe the Government has agreed to fund the Midlands Rail Hub which will include Moor St, upgrades, but I'm not sure when it'll happen yet. I will be looking at that in more detail at some point within the next few months.

    This all looks very futuristic, but there is a huge reliance on visually mundane concrete - takes up a huge carbon footprint so they say. Give me a good old Victorian brick-built viaduct any day!

    • @Rail_Focus

      I wouldn't go as far as saying futuristic, just using current building techniques which will mean the structures will last over 100 years without any significant maintenance. Not all Victorian viaducts are made of brick they also used metal truss structures.

    • @1chish

      As for carbon footprints I think HS2 is leading the way in both low carbon building techniques like electric cranes and the actual concrete that is being poured.

    Wealth of information here 👍🏻 I bet the scaffolding contractor loves this job!
    I assume the canal will need to be closed at some point?

    • @Rail_Focus

      Didn't think to ask if they'll need to close the towpath. But it will likely have to close to construct the scaffold formwork. Not sure if it's used by narrow boats.

    4:00 I happily join in with the others here in thanking you for the details.
    I haven't been able to find answers to these two related questions, so perhaps someone here would be kind enough to help.
    I hold my head in my hands at the appearance of yet more Core-ten rusty steel as I presume that the road bridge is to be burdened with this already off trend eyesore.
    Please tell me that the girder bridge shown lit up with pastel colours isn't going to be like that in real life. I have a horrible feeling that your line
    "Designers have been tasked with ensuring that each element is architecturally striking..."
    veres towards this being the case in future.
    Who wants a pretty bog standard railway bridge like this visible at any time, especially at night?

    • @Rail_Focus

      Unfortunately the long lasting properties and minimal maintenance requirements means weathering steel is the go to material for bridges these days. As far as I can tell the lattice bridge will be illuminated at night, but the colour choice could change.

    Great video to inform the taxpayers of where their money is being spent. As I've said before most of us will never get to use it, even if we could afford it. 🤔🤔🙁🙁

    • @Rail_Focus

      It just doesn't make sense to build a railway no one will be able to afford to use. It will in effect just replace Avanti services.
      But even if people don't use HS2 many people will benefit from the capacity released between Birmingham and London.

      building it to manchester is a necessary critical infrastructure project and there's no other options

      It must be built to Crewe and Euston as a minimum yes. Although it will still relieve pressure on the southern section of the WCML.

    • @1chish

      @@xaiano794 the decision to cancel Phase 2 North was not short sighted at all. It was a necessary decision given a) the borrowing in place to fight COVID, its global effects and that war in Ukraine and b) the massive cost overruns in Phase 1.
      It needed a reset and for allocated funds to be used on other demands. HS2 will get to Manchester when its been redesigned as indeed Northern Mayors are already proposing.

    Too expensive. 5 times more expensive than France and at least double everyone else. Why?

    • @xaiano794

      Primarily all the complainers. From inception to breaking ground was around 20 years, that's 20 years of endless reviews, legal challenges, many, many redesigns, surveys and of course paying for the operation of the HS2 company despite it not being able to actually build HS2.
      Secondly, the ridiculous redesigns, like putting dozens of miles in tunnels just so it didn't spoil the view - this cost tens of billions.
      Thirdly (and laughably this is the smallest) corruption - for example Whittingdon heath golf club near lichfield had £400k of land compulsory purchased, despite the line going nowhere near the clubhouse (and no changes needing to be made) the government agreed to spend £7m building them an entirely new clubhouse.

      @johnfrancis4401 there needs to be a sensible limit on how many challenges are allowed, perhaps a 6 month period where all legal challenges be considered, but after that if nothing is found then the project can't be blocked.

    • @Rail_Focus

      Building in the UK in general is expensive for a myriad of reasons. Although UK vs Europe comparison aren't usually like for like,, as HS2 cost includes stations and trains, whereas in Europe costs are kept separate. Yes it's still relatively expensive but adding stations and trains inflates the costs.

    • @johnfrancis4401

      @@Rail_Focus Why are things more expensive? You agree that even after excluding stations and trains - our building costs are greater. My suggestion is that many delays add to the cost. Delays caused by appeals and lawyers. These could be avoided by going underground in areas of towns, villages, crossing rivers and major roads.

  • @peteregan3862

    Ridiculous building above ground viaducts. The main HS2 line should have tunnelled under Birmingham to a new underground 'through' station then continued from there. Would have saved a fortune.
    UK has wasted a fortune on HS2 repeating the inefficient networks of the 19th century.
