So I wanted to share my experience and tips that have helped me along the way to be less awkward and create great relationships with my clients. I hope you find this helpful! If you do, please give the video a thumbs up and make sure you're subscribed for more videos like this in the future! :)

    As an introvert I like to relax when I get my hair done and try to avoid the small talk. I personally don’t like chatty stylists.

    I went to cos school because I wanted to do hair. I knew I’d have to talk to people but didn’t realize the gravity of it. They honestly should include some psychology or a communication workshop in school that is about real life conversation and not just consultation because people do talk about the most personal things and sometimes we just have no clue how to respond. I think I’ve come out of my shell quite a bit, being an assistant and listening to another stylist interact with clients has helped a lot. But it is a huge part of the job that doesn’t get enough attention in school, and you kind of have to just find your way. It sometimes trips me up trying to concentrate on a color when the client is also trying to have a real conversation. Getting there step by step. Loved the video ❤️

      Agree!! I’m in cosmetology school right now and as an extreme introvert, I get so shy when it comes responding to certain things or asking questions. I wish they’d talk more about it rather than focusing on the consultations because I feel it’s just as important if you want to feel a connection with your client

      Gabriella Gagen I haven’t finished the video yet, but when you are new and all your clients are new that’s the worst and so exhausting. It gets so much better when you start getting repeat clients. Then you are over the small talk you actually know things about them and they do about you and you guys can keep picking up a genuine conversation. Hang in there. I’m an introvert I don’t do hair anymore, but I would always hate getting new clients. 😂 I ended up enjoying hearing about other people’s lives, but I never liked talking about myself.

      @@staceychance1 I used to love new clients, but with repeat clients it was strange after a while 🤣 (Fellow introverted ex hairstylist). With new clients, I could ask a million questions- but once they told me everything about themselves, and I was supposed to talk about myself, awkward city! Lol just interesting how some introverts work differently than others. ✌

    This makes me feel less alone. Sometimes I get so inside of my head trying to think of topics and then I start to overthink things and think maybe I shouldn't ask those questions. I miss the days when we were kids and being social wasnt so exhausting. It was so much more natural for me then. I love people but I honestly hate small talk.

    New subscriber 🤗 I actually went to cosmetology school and taking clients in school made me so anxious because of the socializing part. It’s so unfortunate that I spent so much money in school and I feel like I can not pursue a career with my education because of my social anxiety 😞 Thank you for this video I’ll implement these tips into my daily life 😘

    • @gtucci02
      @gtucci02 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Honestly you could just tell your client as you’re about to start the service “sorry if I’m not super talkative, it’s hard for me to focus on doing hair when I’m talking” and I bet they’d be totally fine with that. You could even throw in a jokey “I’m just weird like that” or “I’m not the best at multitasking” to lighten it up. And anybody who would be offended by the fact that you’re shy is probably not the right client for you 🤷🏼‍♀️ Don’t waste your money and education just because you’re shy! People are more understanding than you might think.

    • @gtucci02

      Also I understand social anxiety is serious and my tips might not help at all. Just throwing it out there

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very true!!! Especially in the beginning (sometimes even now, if I'm doing a service that I don't do very often or I'm trying a new technique) I really have a hard time holding a conversation while I'm concentrating on doing hair, so I'd tell my clients that. But good luck! I hope you can find ways to cope that work for you! I'd hate for you to be unable to do something you love :(

    This video is pure gold!! I can't say how much I relate to this so thankyou for your help! I'm about to start school as a hairdresser and this was one of my main worries, since I am pretty awkward myself ha! I was such a shy kid and still am today which kinda sucks 'cause people around me don't seem to struggle with that! It's funny how you describe clients who don't seem to talk because of their short answers to your questions because I was that client and I did want to talk but wasn't confident enough to speak my mind.

    Girl we are the same exact person when it comes to being shy and awkward 😂 I totally had to make a mental list of topics to bring up, and I’ve definitely said the same thing when forgetting a cape… multiple times! I’ve been doing hair about 10 years now and being behind the chair definitely does feel like a stage and it’s easy now, but in my real life I’m still super shy and introverted. It helps that when you’re doing hair you are standing behind the person cause I’m horrible with eye contact. Loved this video! 💗

  • @ruslana7555
    @ruslana7555 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I always ask how their day is going, and if they have anything else going on today and the first question is a great icebreaker because if you have someone who likes to talk they will lead the conversation but when I ask the second question that is crucial because if they just give me a one word response then I know that they don't want to talk. Even when they don't want to talk that's fine, I just keep the conversation strictly about hair. Ive only been doing hair for a year, but you're exactly right you definitely have to fake it to make it. My personality and hair skills are my money makers, growing up shy too I didn't think I would be good at talking but I've surprised myself because now I feel like its super easy to adapt to what the client needs and wants. You just have to be observant and see what gets them going/talking and roll with that. Of course be careful with iffy topics like religion and politics. And don't forget to smile!! Even when you're doing hair, you don't have to do a full blown smile even a half smile is okay. I have a resting bitch face and just doing a half smile with my shy/not talkative clients does wonders because it makes them a lot more comfortable. I've made it into a game now lol, it's like being on stage and being different characters. Hopefully this helps whoever reads this!!

    I don’t feel awkward I just can’t stand small talk at all. It got better for me when I actually built relationships w my repeat clients. We could have genuine convos which I love one on one. I always wrote notes about them as well. Especially their job, if they had kids then seeing that note would jog my memory and it would all come back to me the things we talked about. I would never want to ask someone multiple times if they had kids and things like that. Oh girl 🤦🏻‍♀️ the same convo all day long I feel you. The Netflix convos are really fun though if you guys are watching the same things. I don’t do hair anymore, I would never socialize or go to any events on the weekends I would miss all kinds of things and people would be upset with me, but I just couldn’t I had nothing left in me. 😘 Love your videos, nope I would have never guessed that about you.

      Sam Vay Yess! 😃 My least fav small talk is at the grocery store when they ask me what i’m doing later or for the weekend or comment on what I’m buying. I’m like none of your business I don’t know you. Since when did these intrusive questions become ok? Ohhh and how is your day going so far. 🙄😂 I know I sound like such a negative person, but I’m really not. Just talk to me about something real or not at all and yes that’s why it was so hard for me to do it to other people, but at least we are going to spend some time with them in our chair and not just say it in passing.
      Love your channel so so much, I really relate to you and your personality. I love that you are real and not over the top. 🙌🙌😘😘

Working at a theme park I've gotten a lot better with talking to people but no where near where I would love to be. It's hard for me to hold a conversation after just "hey how are you?" And I'll throw in a compliment on something in hopes they'll take the convo from there lol.That's all I got but once again you always have good tips and advice. I'm so glad I've found your videos. Can you please do a video on how to respond to clients to get them to book. Like if they send an Inquiry of them say they want to book with you but never do. Do you try to pursuade them and “sell yourself” at all or just tell them how to book. My communication skills need some work 😭

    I'm starting my journey soon as a cosmetologist. I'm 26! Never to "old" to follow your dreams. It can be hard finding an influencer you can relate to that you feel comfortable watching. I love how real and honest you are. This is such a real topic. So many of us have to fake it till we make it lol. I also have a resting bitch face so that doesn't help the situation. It helps to get outside of your head and take on a character role. I'm a natural performer (on stage), but one on one..nuh uh honey. 😅

      The resting bitch face is sooo real!!! Hahaha! I catch myself in the mirror sometimes as I'm working and I'm like "WHY DO I LOOK SO MISERABLE?!?!" lol. Meanwhile I'm loving what I'm doing and in such a good mood, but it doesn't look that way from the outside at all! Definitely something I've been trying to work on. Good luck on your journey!!

    I’m really considering going into this industry, but I am horrified by the idea of awful clients. I did horribly in retail because my customer service voice is nonexistent, and the idea of ruining someones hair or doing something they don’t like worries me. I really hope I’ll be able to do it, if I’m stuck in foodservice my whole life I’m going to end up 6 feet under by my own hands.

    I’m currently in school and I need to cut a men’s hair as my test so that o can take clients (which I passed) so now I can take clients and I’m scared. Some days I’m can talk and some days I can’t talk and I’m super shy and awkward. Where I live, there are a lot of retirement people and most of them can be intimidating which can be hard for me but I hope to be a great cosmetology and overcome my fear😔I’m also shy are my peers and some joke that I’m too shy and some understand but it can hurt my confidence so I try to think positive each day I go to school

    I’m totally an introvert. I have had someone in my family make me feel like a freak because I’m not like everyone else. I do get tired of being social. I don’t like small talk as much as I do an actual conversation that goes beyond “hi how are you.” Cause apparently I can’t be happy being an introvert. I am happy. I’m just different and it’s hard to get an extrovert to understand. Like “you don’t like being around people all the time? What’s wrong with you?”

    Yeah this is me 100%. I've been doing hair 13 years and it's still not completely natural. I know how to do it and I don't feel super uncomfortable anymore but it takes a lot out of me. I definitely still do the whole asking questions just to fill the silence and don't really listen to the answers sometimes😅 And if I drop a comb or can't find something on my first client, I do that crap all day😂 The struggle is real. I can only imagine how awkward I would be if my job didn't force me to interact with people.

    As an extrovert I feel so bad that some people can’t just do this on the fly, I’m super good at talking to people. I don’t think anyone would mind if somebody is quiet though, it’s relaxing to not have to be “on” all the time when I’m the customer

    • @styledbysamvay
      @styledbysamvay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I usually find that the client will do most of the talking (if they like talking), so you can usually just let them lead the conversation. If it feels like you're pulling teeth and there's a lot of awkward silences, they probably aren't too outgoing themselves or they're just not in the mood to talk. So from there, just focus on what you're doing and don't worry about saying anything else!

    I went to beauty school and got my license but quit doing hair... couldn’t deal with how rude and relentless people are when you’re new, shy, and not the best at doing hair yet... I applied at great clips and the manager of the salon interviewed me and I did a haircut on a mannequin and she took me into her office and yelled at me and told me that if she hired me no one would ever come back to that great clips location (mind you I was only 20 at the time and fresh out of beauty school) because my haircut was so awful... I left that place in tears... and my self esteem was shot. No job is worth making you feel like total shit about yourself. I did work at a salon before that and even that was a total nightmare. Haven’t done hair in 6 years now and I completely regret not going to college after I graduated high school.
