Oxford, Oxfordshire, South-East England. Central London is approximately a 90 km drive. Train to London Paddington about 1 hour. A London to Oxford cycle may take 6 hours. In 2017 Oxford’s population was estimated at 152,450. May 2021 to May 2022 the average house price was £579,526. An average detached house £906,470. Semi £581,956. Terraced £518,748. Flat £315,445. The average UK house price was £278,000, meaning houses in Oxford are £300,000 above average. The average temperature is as low as 1°C around December - January, up to around 22°C from June - August. Early records show a nunnery was established in Oxford in the early 7th Century (C). In the 9th C Alfred the Great created a network of fortified towns in England called burhs. These were a network of fortified settlements to keep out attackers like the Vikings. These burhs included Bath, London, Winchester and Oxford. Though fortified Oxford town was still burned to the ground by vikings in 979 and 1009. Oxford also came under heavy attack during 1066 in the Norman Invasion. By this time it was a large well established town. Between 1071-73 the Normans built Oxford Castle. Academic teaching was first recorded in Oxford 1096. The University of Oxford was founded in 1167, it is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. Oxford began to flourish as a market town and centre of academia. But there was ever continuing conflict between townsfolk and academics. In 1209 a woman was killed in the town and the townsfolk hung 2 students. Students fled and established the University of Cambridge. Riots were recorded in 1228, 1236, 1238, 1248, 1272 & 1298. The tension came to a head in 1355 when fighting lasted 3 days. 63 scholars and 30 locals died in what was known as the St Scholastica Day Riots. The relationship between “town & gown” was tense. Kings gave students special privileges over the townsfolk. Over time conflict lessened. During the 12th & 13th C Oxford was also known for its manufacturing, particularly for cloth and leather. In 1517 the mysterious sweating sickness killed half of the population of Oxford. The Diocese of Oxford was formed in 1542, initiating the first Bishop of Oxford, which in-turn granted the town a city status. In 1555 The Oxford Martyrs (3 protestants) were burnt at the stake. This was part of the Marian persecutions where Mary I of England (Mary Tudor or Bloody Mary), had over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake during her 5 year reign. During the English Civil War, where the Parliamentarians and the Royalists fought, Oxford was home to the court of Charles I after he was expelled from London. The town was surrendered to the Parliamentarians during the Siege of Oxford In 1646. Toward the end of the war, with news of Charles II approaching, the Parliamentarians caused much havoc. During the Great Plague in 1603 & 1625-26 the city suffered severe outbreaks. In 1665 Charles II would leave London for Oxford while the plague peaked. Oxford underwent many changes after serious fires in 1644 & 1671. By the 17th & 18th C Oxford had a skyline of spired buildings, including theatres, colleges and churches, with well-paved streets and a large high street. Oxford amply provided for the community and the universities. As the city grew in popularity the streets become more congested, in 1774 a covered market was built for food traders. Prosperity brought the Oxford to London railway in 1844. The summer of 1862 Lewis Carroll took Alice Liddell and her sisters rowing on The Thames in Oxford. Carroll told them the story that will become Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, copies are printed in Oxford three years later. In 1884 the first copy of what will become the Oxford English Dictionary is published. By the early part of the 20th century Oxford is important manufacturing. In 1913 the first Morris car is assembled and sold. In 1920 female university lecturers are given equal status to their male counterparts. The University admits their first 100 women to study for full degrees. Spring of 1926 CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien meet for the first time. Albert Einstein lectures at Rhodes House preparatory in 1931. In 1954 graduate Roger Bannister runs the first sub-4-minute mile on the University track. At the Jericho Tavern in 1986 Radiohead play their 1st gig. Today Oxford's industries still include manufacturing, education and publishing, as well as IT and science. The city of spires is an academic stronghold of excellence, while maintaining lots of tourists throughout. Oxford has been in many films and shows: Anatomy of a Scandal 2022, Eternals, His Dark Materials, Skyfall, A Discovery of Witches, A Clockwork Orange, The Mummy 2017 and Inspector Morse. Harry Potter: the Chamber of Secrets, the Philosopher's Stone and the Goblet of Fire.

Magnificent filming, EIS. The colours of the stone against the early sunlight...really very beautiful. Years ago, I'd spend a weekend in Oxford, staying in a room for the night where the landlady would bang open the door with a tray of an English breakfast and chat away as I, somewhat befuddled and under her eye, would eat the lot. Then I'd got out, wander. I went down the streets you showed, and into narrow alleyways, where I once picked a large pink flower - an hibiscus, perhaps - and placed it in the middle pages of a book I was reading (to find it years later still there, compressed).
This is what can rise up in your memory in looking at your work.

I'm really going for a walk with you and it's a walk with a friend who is just like me. Calm, reflective, sensitive to beauty. I'm sorry for having the courage to call you my friend, but that's how I feel. Thank you for everything. For every image, place, atmosphere, peace, morning and silence. For the sun and shadow of streets, roads, paths and fields. Thank you for every moment spent with you on walks.
You chose wonderful places and showed them in a unique way. It's great that you're...

I love how the city has all the modern amenities (paved streets, traffic lights, etc.), but the MINUTE you see the gorgeous architecture of the university, you're whisked back to medieval times. Education in some form or other has existed at Oxford since 1096, just thirty years after the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror's capture of England. Thank you for this video. I'd imagine that one can really feel the history of the place when walking around.

Very much appreciate the framing, pace, and structure of these elegant walking tour recordings. As an American who is fascinated by British nature, environs and history, walking along with you provides an encounter. The quiet interspersed with bird calls is quite relaxing and allows one to absorb nature - love that tangled walkway in Lacock! - but also the British architectural elements startingly detailed and beautifully fresh to outsider eyes.

    Yes those firkin Vikings again.
Like the mixture of city street views and the parks. Oh so different to anything that we have here in NZ.
Was going to ask if the building had been water blasted clean then you turned of the main drag into a back lane and the stone there was black no doubt from a mixture of centuries of coal smoke and mold especially where where the sun dont shine.
Plenty of work for stone masons.
Talking of stone masons. On a visit to Selby Minister I went into the stone masons yard even though it said Not Open To The Public. The foreman kindly took us ( my young son was with me) around and showed us some of the most wonderful restoration work being carried on there by the team of masons.
    Many Thanks for the vid.

Lovely walk, today. When my wife and I were in Oxford, it was late morning and the amount of traffic was really heavy. What I loved was getting off on those side-ways (in York, I believe they call them "snickleways") and suddenly you could hear the birds chirping and the quiet. If ever you can get up to York and walk both the walls and the town, that would be something to behold. Thanks again for these morning walks. Your filming is even more outstanding with the golden sunshine. Also thanks for going by the Bodleian - another place we visited while there.

Beautiful visuals of Oxford. The captions offer a lot of interesting facts about milestones in the history of the city, but they stop less than halfway through and offer no information about what, exactly, we're looking at. What are these buildings we're passing, and what kinds of subjects are taught inside them? How is Oxford divided into various colleges? Interesting that Radiohead had their first gig here, but more culturally significant (especially for an institution like Oxford) is that in the early 18th century Samuel Johnson attended the school for one year before he ran out of money and had to leave. (Oxford later offered him an honorary doctorate after he had become England's most famous man of letters.)

I Love Oxford! Your video is one of the best I have seen.
All of the streets and paths you take are wonderful.
You get a lot of the beautiful old buildings, and I like the
way a beautiful building suddenly shows up while you
walk a path ,34.45. through 35. Before that 27 min. when
the Sun is rising. And the way the sun lights up the bulidings
    in that beautiful color.
I hope you can do another video of Oxford one day, in
    the Winter.
Thank you for this fantastic video,

I really love all of your morning walk videos because of the wonderful and peaceful atmosphere! I think it’s the most beautiful time of the day though especially the light situation and watching these videos feels like to be there. Also so cute that you put always a lot of information about the spot in there. Thank you for that! Many greets from Berlin :)

This was an amazing walking tour. I have not been to Oxford. Your video gave me a feel for the city. What I needed, though, was to know what I was seeing; which colleges I was passing; where in the city you were walking. To help me do that, I used Google Maps. I was able to follow your path through the city in Google Maps. This allowed me to see where in the city you were, what buildings you were passing, and on what streets you were walking. And by using street view, I was able to see things on your walking path that your video to not pick up.

Thank you John. In hindsight I would have added building detail directly on to the video file as well as the captions. The feedback is appreciated.

An early morning walk indeed !! Bravely done :) I am a retired Oxford academic of some 30 + years, and remember well the many chilly bike rides to prepare lectures for keen and sometimes anxious students !!
Nice to see my own college, Merton, but perhaps, for those not familiar with Oxford, some mention of the various colleges you walked past may have been of some help, don`t you think ?
Regardless, a pleasant walk, nicely filmed at a steady pace - well done !

    • @everywhereisimagined
      @everywhereisimagined  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm a little aw struck that you were at Merton and took the time to comment. I completely understand your comment and it is something that I have thought about at great length. I think I was a little overwhelmed with all the history and buildings and what angle to go with. I've had a couple of ideas on what to do regarding acknowledging key buildings and will try and rectify this over the coming weeks.
I can picture in my head those crisp winter mornings. Thank you kindly

@@everywhereisimagined Oh I say old chap, just thought to offer a constructive suggestion you know - just to lift your video that bit higher :) You might add ( say ) that Merton College, one of the three oldest Oxford colleges, also has the oldest continuously functioning college library in the world, dating back to Medieval times,or that Edmund Hall college ( Teddy`s Hall ) is the only survivor of the many early halls of ( religious) learning that predate the establishment of the colleges themselves !!!
Once again though, well done for your early morning walk - original and interesting :)
