Yeah that's mad. It's obvious from how he bottled it when he made it to the edge that first time and how awkward he was once he got on his board, that he's not a competent surfer. In what world was that a good idea to do try that - surely somewhere in his thought process after that first attempt he was thinking Rocks + Big surf = Potential serious injury or death.

The problem is "ego" and it could happen to anybody. The guy probably knew more than anybody that he didn't belong out there, but it's hard to back out when you have an audience overlooking the cliff and the "walk of shame" waiting your return with people waiting and eager to ask if you're alright or to tell you that you don't belong out there. On the other hand, by making it out successfully, not only do you partially redeoom yourself, you're able to suspend or avoid that dreaded "walk of shame". This isn't to say the dude made the right decision - obviously he made a mistake, but something like this happens to the best of us.

Just last week i witnessed a young surfer doing a similar thing. This guy here was TOTALLY out of his depth. His paddling showed an inexperienced surfer. Has youtube given people an inflated view of their capabilities ? People laughing at him in the video was slightly disturbing. What if he'd suffered serious injury or even worse? How would your laughter be explained? I spent decades jumping off rocks , mostly successfully .

    • @jonathanmayberrydesigns

it was funny, until we watched him paddle. no one was laughing anymore , not even on video bcuz only then did anyone realize he really never surfed before.
