I still think Javier Bardem is one of the most deserving oscar winners of all time for his role as Anton Chigurh. I can't remember the last time a character unsettled me so much as a villain. The movie does an incredible job at making him feel relentless and inescapable

    • @roel.vinckens

So much went into that role. Just look at how Heath studied the look and colour palette of the Joker's costume, the structure of his makeup, the state of his hair. You can almost smell the guy.
Good to know some broad lines came from Rutger's Hitcher, another one whose stink came of the screen to follow us decades after...
And Tom as Rudy in Ironweed, where he plays besides Jack Nicholson 2 years before his Joker, might have put some eary likeability into Heath's performance.
But it's Heath who does the magic here. The voice, the laughter, the absence of fear without removing the adrenaline, all the little sounds that come from that mouth... And let's be honest, when Heath enters the scene it's his universe we're watching. Just has the Joker would have it.

Don't get me wrong, Star Wars is a great story with many worthwhile accomplishments, but I do sincerely believe people tend to overrate the series. It seems that no matter the category, be it characters, visual effects, soundtrack, cinematography, story, or whatever crosses one's mind, Star Wars always pops up as the GOAT which is simply not true. While it does nail a lot of aspects flawlessly, I find lots of other movies surpassing it in many ways. Yes, it's good having it on a list, but don't give it more credit than it's due just because it is the most popular choice. It's one of the reasons why i love CineFix so much.

I saw Mulholland Drive (and its infamous scene with the homeless man behind the diner) before Blue Velvet, but while the former scene was truly the jump scare to end all jump scares, the scene where Booth shows up in BV made my skin crawl. I'm not sure I took a good breath the entire time. Pure Id, pure shadow, unfettered chaos. Well done, CineFix.

Did you have to show the hobbling from Misery? For some reason I can handle Saló and Pink Flamingos, but that scene in Misery makes me physically sick. Also, I’m happy you picked Nurse Ratched as one of your choices. She’s the embodiment of the quiet, distant apathy that should never consume someone in control.

another archetype I like a lot: the villain that only appears late into a movie. this applies to "finally he shows up" Harry (In Bruges) or john doe (se7en) as well as the typical "plot twist villains" tyler durden (fight club). keyser söze also kinda counts but in a different way.
those are almost always fun to watch imo. aprt from that, I also wanna throw in michael gambon from The cook, the thief, his wife & her lover. one of the scariest villains ever put to film from a rather unknown movie.

A great addition would've been Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes in Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd." He fits the "work in sheep's clothing" archetype so well, he almost redefined it. Amazing on so many levels: that is was Andy effing Griffith playing the part, that it was made in 1957 - foreshadowing everything we're experiencing right in this very moment in American politics, and that it still holds up stylistically to any similarly themed films of the past couple decades. It's that good, and most people don't know it even exists.

Great list. Tough list. Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber gets mentioned in your lists, but never with the love he deserves. It was his character, not McClane's, that redefined and recharged the action movie genre for decades to come. Also, malign the film all you want, but Patrick McGoohan's portrayal of Edward Longshanks in Braveheart was pitch-perfect. I would also throw in Col. Jessup (A Few Good Men), Col. Mathieu (Battle of Algiers), Spattoletti (Love and Anarchy), John Doe (Se7en), Aaron (Primal Fear), Amon Goeth (Schindler's List) and Le narrateur (Last Year at Marienbad). Thanks for another entertaining list.
