  • Without this, you're favourite pair of jeans wouldn't exist. And that would be a tragedy.

I think that needles are pretty useless for sewing leather. To sew leather you first puncture the leather with an awl all along where you want to sew. You then use the needle the thread the thread along the holes the awl created.

Sounds like a needle is still least useful, even if it still requires an awl. Threading something through a hole made by an awl without a needle is a lot less efficient and more frustrating than using a needle, right? Like gears aren’t required to make a bicycle but a bicycle with gears is a lot more practical than a penny farthing.

This is true, I wonder what requires more effort, threading by hand or making the needle

Bone needle can also be used as an awl

i guess they wouldnt mind to thread the needles over and over again. i bet that perception of time back then was very very different of how we think about today

they probably minded :( they just had no choice, the fact we dont have to do that now means at least one person mined enough to make a better version

Whilst we are presently in an age where the technological developments are on a grander scale, our survival and flourishing comes down to such things as needles, cookware, fire-starting and keeping techniques, levers and, of course, the wheel. Being able to sew is a skill not ranked as highly as it should be, especially the skill to embroider - back in my younger days that was a valued talent in the Rock Music circles for being able to adorn your denims properly :)

Does it matter that once you thread a needle you can sew without looking? If I was in the cold dark north in a bed of furs in a cave with my savage stone age bf on my left and my savage stone age gf on my right, there's no heckin way I'd get out of bed to push a limp thread through 200 tiny holes while I shivered in the rare sunshine, no way I'd even bring the work up above the covers into the freezing air if I didn't have to.

Yeah tbh I wouldn’t want to be chilly either, I’d just wear fur ponchos if I could get away with it
