    I've had an option I got off of Woot back in 2007. It works really well. I do the turkey every year with it. I honestly don't do anything else with it at this point, but I have done ribs, chicken, pork butts, etc in the past. it's a solid product.

    you will always get a better smoke taste with charcoal and wood chunks - chips than a with a pellet smoker. Jack Try the Weber smokey mountain. it's a set it and forget it charcoal smoker.

    Ok, I have a few questions.
    1. does the smoke from the coals actually go into the chamber where the bird is?
    2. does the drippings that end up in the drip pan burn?
    If the smoke from the coals is actually going into the meat I have a HUGE issue with the method you used. Using briquettes like you did you NEVER want to put your meat on until the coals get white. There are a lot of chemicals that they put in them (especially when you use lighter fluid) to have them burn faster like "Match Light"
    The product looks good other than what I've pointed out. You might want to use "Lump" style real wood. This would eliminate the chemicals found in briquettes.

    • @cookingwithjackshow
      @cookingwithjackshow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +David Bowen
      1. no. The smoke from fluid and charcoal never enter the chamber
      2. the drippings were perfect and not burned at all. about 1.5 cups of beautiful drippings for gravy if you want. Drip pan has handle for easy lifting out.

    DAM IT! My cousin was just telling me about this and I said " DUDE, I gotta a Traeger please".......... Same exact Traeger you have Jack......I wish you didn't say that it smoked better cause now I gotta buy one of these. lol.
    Question: I didn't see that you filmed the juice tray....was there any juice or did it all burn up from the heat? Thanks

    GREAT REVIEW JACK, THE EDITED PARTS AT END MADE FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT. MY ONLY QUESTIONS WOULD BE WHY WOULDN'T YOU USE NATURAL LUMP CHARCOAL INSTEAD OF THE BRIQUETTES? AND I AM NOT A FAN OF THE LIGHTER FLUID, YOU COULD USE THE HEATON ELECTRIC CHARCOAL STARTER OR SOME PARIFAN BASED FIRE-LITES. MUCH SAFER (NO BIG FLARE UPS) AND BETTER FOR THE ENVIROMENT.

    • @cookingwithjackshow
      @cookingwithjackshow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Art Splawn the electric starter doesn't fit in the slender moat area for lighting. I just used the charcoal because that is what the owner suggested using. I didn't want to use lump charcoal for fear it would alter the cooking process. Too hot or not evenly dispersed eat so the turkey would cook evenly.

    In your opinion Jack, could wood be used instead of charcoal in the moat part of this cooker? You said in the video it is well made. Reason I ask is that I am close to a mill that has a free wood bin, and there's always a lot of 4 inch by 1 inch clean cedar pieces. Most likely end pieces from something they make a lot of.

    Hey Jack i love your videos. When is the next lazy man video :)?

  • @bradingalls5457
    @bradingalls5457 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wasn't trying to be a smart ass, I was just giving my opinion. I have cooked many turkeys and other meats using the trash can and similar methods and when the results aren't quite the way i wanted, I've backed off the charcoal ( especially the top charcoals ) and adjusted the time a little, Have you every cooked something and followed a recipe to the T ? But still had to make some adjustments, Maybe by tweaking your cooking method and using your own experience as guide the next time you cook that particular recipe? That is what cooking is all about,, have fun with it,,,, BTW Love the show Jack, keep up the great the great work

    • @cookingwithjackshow
      @cookingwithjackshow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brad Smith your right. I believe 2 hours would have done it. When I redo this video I will adjust the time. it probably wouldn't have split in less time. Also after reviewing the uploaded video I noticed that the legs pulled up a little more than needed meaning it was done earlier than expected. thansk for the insight.

    Always enjoy your presentations, but I'd like to see it in action again. One serious question, and I'm not trolling, I really want to know. You used match-light charcoal AND lighter fluid with the food already in the cooker? I can't see how that (''flavor'') wouldn't have permeated the meat.

    what size bird was that? How were the wood chips used? Were the juices at the bottom collected for gravy?

    • @cookingwithjackshow
      @cookingwithjackshow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Shawn Bauer The bird was 20lbs. The wood chips were places around the drip pan. there is a 1 inch gap. I had filmed that but lost the footage somehow. I really wanted to show it. There was at least 1.5 cups of drippings.

    Frozen turkeys split. Does that mean pretty much any supermarket turkey, or was the one you put in still mostly frozen?

    • @cookingwithjackshow
      @cookingwithjackshow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Carl W just tie it with kitchen twine before cooking just to make sure. I believe the flash freezing makes the turkey's carcass brittle.

    • @cookingwithjackshow
      @cookingwithjackshow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scott DeGasperis the drip pan has an inch of space around it inside the drum. You place the chips between the inside wall and the drip pan. I filmed it but the footage got damaged.

    That d@mn turkey fell apart. It didn't even make it out. That has got to be the most amazing thing I've ever seen. You know the meat will be amazing when the turkey falls apart under its own weight.
    Also, even though it was a turkey, and the skin was thin, that bark looked beautiful. After watching this, your video on blanching and smoking vs roasted turkey, I think I might look into the world of smoking my food.
    UPDATE
    Ohhh, so flash frozen turkey ma split.

    • @cookingwithjackshow
      @cookingwithjackshow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alfredo Pacheco Jr yes. just use butchers twine to tie it up so that it holds together. A fresh bird won't do this. I believe the flash freezing process makes the carcass brittle.

      +Cooking With Jack Show Sorry, I posted my comment before I read this one. So you are saying that NONE of the smoke from the coals actually goes inside the cooking chamber? So how are you achieving the smoked flavor? If it's acting like a dutch oven then you are perfectly fine to use lighter fluid and charcoal briquettes like that. But, If the smoke somehow goes in side the chamber then you are going to poison yourselves with a bunch of chemicals.
