Anyone out there who have never used a Nalgene Oasis canteen let me enlighten you on it. I have used one for over 10 years and it has never failed me. I have kept water in it for weeks at a time and it’s never has a plastic flavor. They are definitely worth getting.
Paul, great to see you back. Another great video on practical, common man gear.
It’s possible to take this kit a little further and wear it as an EDC that fits in a cargo pocket with a couple of changes:
1. Swap out the canteen with a gusseted MRE style bottle bag and some water tablets.
2. Swap the tarp for a mylar blanket.
You lose shelter durability and the ability to boil water (more than a few times), but you gain the ability to always have it with you unless you lose your pants.
Btw, i like the stainless steel GI canteen water because I could use it as a weapon for self-defense and to dispatch food. I don't think that it will work with a plastic bottle.
I mean, yeah, you could definitely use it for those things. That's definitely being adaptle with the gear you have. Think I might try a rabbit stick instead, atleast don't have a chance of damaging my canteen. But I appreciate you watching and commenting!
I got my GI Military cover and my Canteen cup 800ml with butterfly wings handles at Jolmo lander at Aliexpress. The Pathfinder Canteen cooking kit fits perfectly.
Nice video. Military surplus is a great option. Plentiful, practically bulletproof, and usually affordable. Huntsman SAK (red) is my EDC. I find I use it almost every day. I'm surprised how much I use the scissors and toothpick.
Glad to see you back Paul. Thanks for sharing.
Great to see you Brother. I haven't come across one of those canteen cover yet I've got old school ones and couple new but they have a flap under the y strap that doesn't fit right over the canteen.
Thanks Paul. Welcome back !
Another awesome video Paul. Thanks for sharing brother 👍
Good video Paul, thanks for sharing, YAH bless !
A good basic kit system, well explained , especially for the beginner.
Can I humbly suggest that you can improve the kit by adding a few feet of duct tape to the body of your Bic lighter.
A small ferrocerium rod wouldn't take up much additional room either.
I would add a small spoon or spork to your kit too, plenty of room in that pouch for one, especially if you are going above the tree line and wouldn't have the wherewithal to carve a replacement spoon.
A small survival whistle (ACR or ACME/HUDSONS) dangling on the outside , on a short lanyard would be a added safety factor too.
I like your common sense approach to this subject.
Bic is a ferro rod. That's what makes it spark. I carry no less than 2. And usually a Zippo.
I have this attached to a crossbody bag for walking my dog. Sometimes we go farther than I realize; mostly out of service.
My first canteens i got my Dads WW 2 USGI stainiess steel canteen & cup & a pathfinder stove for the USGI stove, then i got a British Army pattern 1958 canteen BCB cruader cup & stove lit now i carry both.
I would make the suggestion that you substitute a 111mm SAK. Locking blade and a much bigger saw. 4 layer version as that gets you scissors as well.
Just buy the canteen kit form Self-reliance outfitters, comes with bag, cup and lid, ferro rod, fire starters and a spork. All good quality ready to go.
@craigshugg2332…. Fair enough.
But some of us still find pleasure in using military surplus and building our own custom kit. To each his own. Kind of like the difference between buying carryout and cooking a meal from scratch.
Fun fact: even in his own gear videos, Dave Canterbury doesn’t carry the pre assembled Pathfinder canteen cook kit. He uses an M85 woodland camo surplus canteen pouch.
I agree that this kit will make a few days manageable for most people. However my experience with these Chinese poncho's is that they don't easily fit over my head, I have to stretch the material a little bit. So after putting one on two or three times the head opening teares. All this to say that if you buy one, try it, to see if it fits.
As for ignition I always carry a fire steel on my keychain as a backup, and a fresnel lens in my wallet.
Simple and concise. Thanks.
Here from Corp. Corner 🫡
Thru-hikers carry plastic Smart Water bottles all the way from Georgia to Maine. They only carry one 750ml titanium pot for boiling water. I bet the “Bushcraft God’s” hate that!😂😂😂
Totally different sport and hobby. We hike in, make camp, enjoy training and learning new skills for 2 or 3 days and hike out. Then we go back to work!
That looks like the Rothco SS canteen cup and lid set
I really like it! I have something similar. I may have to do a video on it 🤔
Water purification tablets should be in your Water Canteen Kit.
The corporal sent me
add a few packets of electrolyte drink powders or COFFEE to complete the kit
Man that amazon link that you posted has expensive backpacks.
Just buy a Pathfinder canteen kit for 44 dollars.
Doubt you get everything I showed in this video for $44. But to each their own. I just show what options you can do, not telling anyone what they should do.
I like iron infidel
Presentation is way too slow.
Glad you’re back. Great video. We should collaborate
