It's hard to overstate how massive this performance, this era, was for Janet. It was a complete reinvention and stunned the world. What's exciting here is that it was the first time she debuted choreo for That's The Way Love Goes. Everyone was talking about this performance the days and weeks after

1993 MTV Video Music Awards - Madonna opened the show with a performance of "Bye Bye Baby" from "Erotica" and Janet closed the show with this legendary performance.
@@EmpressReacts They both had their respective crowns. The 90's belonged to Janet, Whitney, Mariah, Madonna and Celine Dion. EACH of them consistently rotated on the top 5 throughout the decade. It was an era of great music due to all the amazing talent, EACH possessed. And thats not even including the men and the girl/boy groups of the 90's. This performance was highly praised the next day, and so was Madonna's. And usually, it was all contingent upon who the writer was and which artist they leaned towards. So many great memories from this performance. First of all the world was stunned earlier that summer when Janet was about to drop this album and kick off this era and her first single and video she drops is that’s the way love goes! It’s like what?! Janet you can’t kick off a new album with a slow groove with you and your dancers lounging in a loft! I was like we need a banging dance track with a multi million dollar video and a fleet of dancers with insane choreography! Once we got over the shock of her genius move we all realized how smooth and sexy that’s the way love goes was. So when the VMA’s rolled around she finally released her follow up single and video “if”. I just knew she was going to bring down the house that night with the live debut of her new song, but she got me again and came out with that’s the way…! I was SO disappointed that she wasn’t doing if that when she went into a slowed down version of it I got hyped all over again but thought “awww she’s going to do this slow remix with just the girls and not give me that legendary choreography from the video. 😔 So when the music stopped and the curtain opened with the red drapes blowing and with the boys coming down from the ceiling just like in the video needless to say I lost my mind!!! That Jackson magic strikes again! 😁
Also fun fact I was supposed to be in the “If” video, it was supposed to take place in a all black speakeasy type jazz lounge. I was cast as one of the patrons in the lounge but at the last minute they decided to change up the theme and go with an Asian massage parlor/sex part type of feeling. So I got cut but got to go to the set and watch a little. Another fun fact Kevin Stea the Asian dancer from blonde Ambition was in this video. He’s the guy getting thrown down on a bed in one of the shots.
Tens across the board. This era was massive for Janet she was coming off of massive success in the 80's now she was vamped sexy, a woman ready to tackle the 90's. She was the second most successful artist of the 90's decade by Billboard right behind the elusive chanties herself Mariah. She was definitely hotter then Michael during this era.
Fun fact, Virgin wanted to released ''If'' has the first single of the ''Janet'' album, but Janet, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wasn't right about that and wanted ''That's the Way Love Goes'' for the first single of the album. After she battles with Virgin for that, Janet winning and ''That's the Way Love Goes'' was released has the first single of the album. The massive success of this song proof that Janet was right about that. ''If'' was released has the second single of this album and was also a hit.
Janet dished it up. She didn't give a small dish neither. She gave the whole buffet. Madonna opened the show apparently, but by the end of the night everyone was like "MADONNA WHO???"
Don't think that's true about Madonna as she started her World Stadium Tour with two sold out shows at Wembley Stadium in London just 2 weeks later and played in front of 1,5 million people in concert in just three months. Both are and were amazing in 1993, no need to pit them against each other and put down one to make the other one look better. They're both great and were huge in the 90s.
