  • On this episode of Sounding Off we have Guitarist and Founder of the Progressive Metal (Djent) band Periphery! Yes, he does Djent.
    PERIPHERY is a Grammy-nominated American progressive metal band based in Washington, D.C., formed in 2005. Their musical style has been described as progressive metal as well as Djent. They are considered one of the pioneers of the djent movement within progressive metal. The band consists of vocalist Spencer Sotelo, guitarists Misha Mansoor, Mark Holcomb, Jake Bowen, and drummer Matt Halpern. Periphery released their self-titled debut in 2010, followed by Periphery II: This Time It's Personal on July 3, 2012. On December 3, 2013 they released a teaser for their EP Clear, which was subsequently released on January 28, 2014. Periphery's third and fourth studio albums, entitled Juggernaut: Alpha and Juggernaut: Omega respectively, were released on January 15, 2015. Most recently, Periphery released their third self-titled album, Periphery III: Select Difficulty on July 22, 2016.

      Misha, about what you said about learning synthesis and orchestral arrangement after being a bit uninspired by metal guitar, watching you go through that through your instagram posts is what inspired me to do the same thing, and suddenly i'm writing a ton of music again. You helped me without even realizing it, so thanks for that.

    One of the biggest names in modern music today.. “we don’t really make any money from it...we just make music for fun now.”
    Legitimately one of the most depressing things I’ve heard in a long time.

    • @poulwinther
      @poulwinther 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      ....and yet you probably belong to the mob flaming Lars for putting his career on the line trying to avoid this state of things.

    • @MishaMansoor
      @MishaMansoor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +108

      It shouldn't be though, it's kinda nice to be able to just make music for the sake of making music. That's how I got started and what made me happy in the beginning, and it's good to be able to have that dynamic now.

    • @JesterMasque
      @JesterMasque 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Misha Of course!! By itself, it is truly a beautiful thing, and I fully understand where you're coming from. But it still feels a bit like you're saying that there's no such thing as a career as an artist in the music industry anymore, only marketing and sales. I'm not saying that the state of the industry isn't what it is, I think that is pretty clear to see. But I want to hear about what we can do to draw people back in to the idea of supporting artistry here in the US. It does seem bleak, but I think it's only up to us to try and turn things back around. We just need to know where to start.

    • @bellmeisterful
      @bellmeisterful 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Poul Winther Knudsen so true. I'm an old metal head and I didn't hate them for being against Napster way back when.

    • @JesterMasque
      @JesterMasque 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Poul I think that's an amazing perspective that people never look at. They think that he was just trying to scrape a few more pennies from the album sales, but it was a legitimate reflex because file sharing was going to flip the industry on it's head. And look where we are now.. I'm not saying that I want to make millions of dollars just to play guitar, but we can't sit here and think that it's okay to trivialize the artistry that goes into the music that we consume.

    Another great interview. Rick, this is what makes your channel so amazing! Your appreciation for ALL musical styles is very infectious. Ive always like Periphery. They do a great job combining progressive metal with an almost pop appeal. Very listenable to a novice. Ive been writing some game music ideas and reference Periphery for their beautiful ideas, sound, and production. Misha seems like a great guy. He’s very articulate and down to earth. Thanks again…

    • @RickBeato
      @RickBeato  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Thank you Tom. It’s musicians like yourself that get it. Being able to appreciate all styles of music only expands your musical vocabulary. Most people become limited by their narrow musical tastes which typically happens in your 30s.This is really important for people that write music for film or TV.

    Personally I make the music I like to listen to. But yeah, a few months after the release of a new album, I don't want to listen to it, having listened to the songs under a microscope so to speak, during the production cycle. So far I've just had pleasant surprises when putting on one of my own albums after that cool down period. Knock on wood. :-)

    Great video Rick! I'm a metal guy. Grew up on classic rock (97 Rock, Buffalo), country, alternative, 80s & 90s rap, 80s hair metal, classic metal and nowadays, European power metal and some screamy stuff. But when I'm not playing or trying to write riffs, I LOVE listening to smooth jazz. Totally chills me out, always a good groove to be had.

      I'm afraid of disagreeing with you and getting an angry rebuttal but you could argue that crowd funding contradicts that statement insofar as customers pay money directly towards a budget of an artist's own determining. That method of payment seems completely without compromise.

    • @rubensousa9216
      @rubensousa9216 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Wtf... Music making takes years of practice and a huge effort on behalf of the musician. That "do it for fun" bullshit would never stick to any other high skilled job, why should it be applied to musicians? The problem is that people associate playing music with having fun, and associate having fun with "you don't need to get payed for that, just enjoy yourself". Being a medical professional, or a lawyer, or a salesman it not associated with fun, and therefore you must be payed for your "hard work"...
      Music shows sell. The problem isn't any lack of money but the idea that musicians shouldn't be payed much since they enjoy their job, which leads to the money being largely directed to everyone but the musician.
      Good music making shouldn't be for fun. It's sad that it might be, but I disagree with the idea that it should...
