  • Follow along on the 3rd stage of my 2021 bike touring expedition. On this trip I'm following the Ohio River Scenic Byway from Pittsburgh, PA to my home in southern Illinois. It took me 12 days to cover the 775 miles along the Ohio River. There's plenty of industry along the river as well as lots of historic pretty little river towns waiting to be explored. Mix that in with stretches of awesome roadway in the Ohio Valley to make for an epic bike touring adventure. From Pittsburgh, I took the Montour trail and clipped the panhandle of West Virginia on the Panhandle trail. From Wheeling, WV I followed the Ohio River through Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois.

    I think everything about this is remarkable. The whole ride. The video. The editing. I think this is your best one. As someone who has only made it to 50 miles once, I'm in awe of your long rides.

      Thanks for watching and leaving the nice comment. I'm still an amateur, but it's a fun hobby and I'm glad you think they're getting better. I think they're getting better too. A half century ride is still a pretty good haul. Just think of it as a whole bunch of half centuries, one after another, after another. Thanks again!!😁

    Paul, how did you get from downtown Pittsburgh to the Montour Trail? Did you have to cycle on city streets?

    • @paulsuchecki3985
      @paulsuchecki3985  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From downtown Pittsburgh, one could back track on the GAP to meet up with the Montour Trail near McKeesport. Or one could battle with motorized traffic on city streets. I chose the easy way out. I got a ride (hired a cab) to take me the 7 miles or so northwest of downtown Pittsburgh to the Groveton / Forest Grove area and jumped on the Montour Trail up there. The only thing worse than riding on big city streets, is riding on unfamiliar big city streets.

      @@paulsuchecki3985 Thank you. There is a proposed connector trail, but I don't think it exists at this time. I looked for it and couldn't find it, so I ended up riding Noblestown Road all the way to the Panhandle Trail near Carnegie and back to Weirton.

    I wonder how much time editing and learning to put these videos together you spend compared to the amount of time you spend on the bike peddling. I've been a big fan of the Ohio ever since I did a road trip along it back in '81. Always thought it would make a great bike tour, awesome to see your video of it. Love your videos, a good, energetic pace, and great narration. You have a gift. And of course I love the enthusiasm you bring to bike touring. I mean, it's the best! What is better than the freedom of being in the middle of a long-distance bike tour? Especially in the midwest. Anyway, hello from Julianna and me in Colorado. We just biked across the US last summer, BTW, we fell in love with Southern Illinois.. If you get around to it, here's our channel: th-cam.com/channels/xz7gQawlKZ7za4KHMqGcaQ.html

    Greatly shot video, people always talk about Ohio being flat and boring, I always say, "WTF are you talking about, you must have never been to the Appalachian region of Ohio which is like half of the State". I say, Ohio is a great state and has just as much to do as other states. I tell them if you love nature Ohio has hundreds miles of Trails, thousands of parks, we great restaurants, Amusement parks, beaches on the Great Lake, we have skiing etc. We may not have the biggest Mountains/hills but they are enough for Hikers and Skiing.

    Hey Paul,
    Huge fan here! I've been into bikes my whole life, so seeing your adventures is like living vicariously through the ultimate cyclist.
    I'm also a bit of a film nerd, and I have to say, your video style is pure gold. I started watching for the bike touring, but I stayed for the cinematic magic. The cadence of your voice blends perfectly with your music selection and your transitions, and even those subtle special effects are great! Creating travel videos is no joke, and your B-roll is always on point. I'm always making excuses for my own lack of good B-roll, but you're my inspiration to keep trying.

    You are the real deal! I just watched a video in which the bikes were driven to the trail, the riders ate every meal in restaurants, and stayed in motels every night. There was nothing on their bikes but a water bottle, and a small rack bag. WOW! It must be nice, but it's not what I call bike packing or touring. To each his own! Personally , I can't afford it. I'm 72 years old, on a very modest fixed income. I have an artificial hip and knee, and no automobile. I do hard core bike touring, like you, and I thank you for the inspiration, and all the great tips. I'm getting ready for a 250 mile trip from Columbus to Cincinatti AND BACK! Keep up the good work. Love your videos! I'd like to see one that shows how you produce them singlehandedly -- you have drone shots looking down at you riding, and the real puzzlers are the shots as you ride past the camera and it pans with you. Great stuff, and your production quality has really become excellent.
    My wife and I ride a Trek T900 tandem. One thing we always have on our rides are "missing link" chain repairs -- with two chains that are critical, gotta be able to repair them (broke the main chain once and was glad I had them!)

      Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. I call them 'drive by shots'. I use an Insta360 camera, set up next to the trail or road. As I ride by it, it records everything 360 degrees around the camera. In the editing process you can make the camera follow the subject, or move anywhere within that 360 degree view. It makes it look like someone is behind the camera moving it. Thanks again. Stay safe and ride on!

    hello. did you follow maps or street signs between the trails? for example, from the montour to the panhandle, to the ohio river scenic byway to the tunnel trail? Is it easy or is complicated to find out the route once a rail trail is over? thanks a lot :)

    • @paulsuchecki3985
      @paulsuchecki3985  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Montour and the Panhandle are connected somewhere between Pittsburgh, PA and Wheeling, WV. I picked up the Ohio River Scenic Byway south of Wheeling but north of the River on the Ohio side. I use a good ole Rand McNally paper map. For more info about the Byway, check out this website: ohioriverscenicbyway.org/
      I didn't stay on that road the entire time. I like to avoid big cities like Huntington, Cincinnati, Louisville. There's lots of info on the web. It's not a specific cycling route, it's more of an auto route. But that never bothered me. Once I got into Illinois, I left the Byway and picked up the Tunnel Hill Trail in Harrisburg. Ride on! Stay safe.

      I just followed a Rand McNally Map. I don't have a turn by turn cue sheet. The Ohio River Scenic Byway is a designated scenic route, mostly for motorists. There's even a website. I didn't stay on the byway the entire time. I improvised to avoid big cities and sharp bends in the river.

    Great video, thanks! I cycled my version of the ACA Northern Tier and wound up on the Panhandle and Montour as I headed to PGH from Ohio. Stopped in OH for a family reunion, decided to skip New England, and took the GAP/C&O into DC. Finishing a long tour with several hundred miles off road on trails was perfect. I love bike touring, but seeing those shoulders with rumble strips along the edge reminded me of the miles I have walked when tractor trailers and heavy traffic in both directions created too much stress. Rail and canal trails are American gems, wish we had more of them.

      The Trail of Tears go right past my house. There are also no National Parks in Illinois.

      Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Draw (trace), yes. Pretty rough. Stay safe and ride on!

      Sorry about the late response. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. I just use boring old paper maps that you used to find at gas stations. I usually have an overall plan, but choose exact roads day by day. It's part of the adventure. Stay safe and ride on!!
