I have a nostalgia for early VK too (I cut my teeth, so to speak, thanks to a friend linking me to a site called Project-J back in 2003 where I was exposed to the likes of Dir en grey, Malice Mizer, Gackt, L'arc en ciel and Luna Sea), but really that question is like asking "Whatever happened to synth rockers like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan etc... times change, tastes and demographics change. Like how Guns N' Roses were at their height of popularity, then Nirvana hit.
