The Edge once said in an interview that he plays rhythm guitar to Adam's lead bass.
This is self evident in the Studio Version of Bad. Adam is clearly leading that song. Edge is featured more prominently in the live versions though.

So cool. You verbalized what I love about Adams playing when you talked about his melodic syncopation. His style is so difficult to grasp but easy to groove to. His tone was always so interesting and different. Thank you for talking about his playing!
In gods country and One tree hill are great examples of simple but suggestiv bass lines.
FINALLY some respect put on Adam's name - I feel like Adam gets the same treatment in the bass world as Edge gets in the guitar world, which is ignorance and biased judgement. They both are part of the biggest band in the entire world and create beautiful music together, with a TON of diversity in sound. Neither are technical wizards of their instruments (I'd argue Edge is with his effects though), but they play within themselves and still have amazing standout moments. Edge has some really melodic and impressive solos and Adam has fantastic basslines that hold entire songs together, but he does get to show off on stuff like "Gloria". Love both players for what they bring to their band - and Larry is such a great drummer too, again, mostly overlooked in the drum community. They are such a solid 3 piece outfit. Bono is a lucky guy!
You're dead right. It's become cool to hate on all these guys, which is unfortunate. I think a lot of it is envy, because they had so much popularity for so long. People who've sweated to become virtuosos wonder why they didn't make it instead. But few trios can put together a sonic landscape like Adam/Edge/Larry. It isn't a matter of "how do they play that?" but rather "how did they think of that?" Distinct, emotive songwriting will always trump chops.
I don't think they are overlooked by other musicians. It's people who aren't musicians who overlook them. They are typical of a punk band who learned to play their instruments playing together and not sitting in a bedroom alone. The difference is their careers moved them forward into such diverse mediums and their styles evolved.

When you actually listen and follow Adam Clayton's bass during songs, he is truly awesome. One of the most underrated musicians of all time.
Adam does what the song calls for, and brings the whole sound together …and he does both very well.

Great video. The one thing you missed is Clayton's use of the minor 7th. He usually uses it to accentuate the 1, like in Even Better Than The Real Thing.

I was going to suggest Al Cisneros, too. His playing is heavy but melodic with a unique tone. And he's all about that Rickenbacker!

U2 is indeed amazing. None of them are overly talented in playing their instruments. Bono is an exceptional singer and Edge sings well as well. Adam Clayton is given beginner bass lines to eliminate dead space and Edge learned early how to fill up air space with delay and other effects as he is no shredder. Larry is a passable drummer but not many sing his praises. The song writing is good and they are masters of the catchy, churchy sounding riff. Hey, they make it work and are still selling out huge stadiums. God bless 'em....

I wish one of you guys would cover Michael Shuman of QOTSA and maybe even talk about how the bass sound of the band started with Nick Oliveri and then evolved as it carried on into the current sound. Two very different bassists but totally interesting unique melodical and tonal approaches.
Oh man, I miss Nick so much. Michael isn't bad or anything, but Nick just brought so much to that band.

I absolutely loved U2 growing up but stopped listening after Pop. As a bass player I hate playing any four note eighth note songs. Playing songs like 'With or Without You' sap my will to live. Bullet the Blue Sky is repetitive but the rhythm is more interesting. Having said that there are plenty of songs that have a little variety. Love Comes Tumbling has a nice part.

Great video/series! One thing I never understood about Clayton is how he has such a following as a bass player, he’s not awful he’s just boring! Basically has learned a couple fills and snacks the roots and has done for 40 years. Not my cup of tea but fair play if he’s inspired you to pick up the bass!
