My dad and I don't get along! We haven't talked or seen each other in over 45 years. But the only good memory I have of my father and I is the two of us dancing to Engelbert Humperdinck's most popular song "Release Me Never Let Me Go" (forgive me if I butchered the title of the song). The words don't go for a father & daughter obviously; but it was one of my dad's favorite songs to dance to so whenever it came on the HiFi & my mom wasn't around he'd dance with his little girl. This is the only memory I have where my father wasn't an alcoholic abusive asshole. When we danced to this song, it was like time stood still & I had a glimpse of what it would be like if my father wasn't an abusive alcoholic. Whenever I hear that song I instantly recall this most special, although a fantasy inducing, memory of us dancing.
I've seen Englebert several times including last April over the years and he still has that power like Mathis to hold the mic away from him and make it look effortless. A lesser song from the Miracles CD but Loving You, Losing You is one of my favorites along with Don't Know How to Say Goodbye. Merry Christmas 🎄 all.
