I did this once in a game, I was going against a lot of 260+ offensive lineman and I was a soaking 215 defensive tackle. They handed it off to fullback on 4th and 2 and I dropped down with the center and guard to create a pile and the blockage allowed the linebackers to read and engage in hitting the ball out to win us the game. It’s little things man. Just DOING YOUR JOB. Sacks, qb pressures, and fumbles are cool and all but if you can’t read or stay disciplined… it’s gonna be a long game in those trenches. Great video and technique man!
Have him look up nfl game pass film sessions and have him watch the guys at his position. It’s basically nfl pro bowlers watching film with hall of famers/legends and explaining the player perspective on how they made those plays. A lot of great info for a first year player. Hope he has a healthy season!
Make sure the saying “down means trap” is instilled into his brain and to keep his head and hips low on the down block. Make sure he gets under the pulling Y-back, tackle, or guard and it will cause the ball to bounce outside, while the linebackers will finish the job, DO NOT ALLOW THE JUMPTHROUGH
Also lining up on an angle towards the outside shoulder of the guard will help u as well. That way u don’t have to worry as much about the tackle hitting u in the chest and knocking u back off that double team. It gives u advantage to already have ur shoulder turned and enabling u to beat off a double team much more effectively
Lining up at an angel probably the worst thing you can do. Game situation you don’t know if it’s going to be a double down, It could be zone away and then you lost
Hand placement is good and his first step was aligned but I don’t agree with pulling the OL back into you just to work up field and definitely don’t just cause a pile off a one man down. I can understand a double team but this is a zone scheme . I always teach fight pressure with pressure and I coach my lineman to be playmakers not just pluggers
@@johnstone5550 bro, no, that is not legal. Dline can and does get called for holding at every level. Just google Defensive Holding. You can't tackle or grab blockers.
@@JoshuaSmith99 you can absolutely grab blockers within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. And falling to a knee while holding pads on d-line does not constitute holding or tackling
@@FLgrappleacademylol, I actually was called once in high school while playing against Ritchie Incognito. I have video of it too. The freshman coach is next to the camera yelling about the call. "How can you call defensive holding on the interior line?!?" Funny thing is, I wasn't holding. I shot the gap while bear crawling to stay low, and incognito tackled me. Lol, funniest penalty I ever had against me.
For nose guards, when playing a gap protection defense what you what to do is hit the center, and then when the double comes you “fight pressure” which clogs ups the middle and messes up the play.
Actually I’ve never been called on holding on defense only on offense when I was holding the defender and I’ve hold the offensive lineman multiple times
Having them push verticle and run up field like that teaches bad habits and allows linemen to get washed by the off man or create lanes when pushing too far up field
Bad advice for the pull and 1 knee just injury waiting to happen tryna get kids hurt smh.......the best thing to fill that gap to is club and rip get small 4 stance and go because on blocker is going to the linbacker after a check dont give that chance and for the love of god dont stand straight up you need leverage

Man's never heard of holding before
Down down block. 😤
Bro told em to hold😂
It’s defense. There is no holding on the defensive line. Totally legal!

How many times have you seen a flag thrown in high school on a defensive linemen for holding on a run block? For me, zero in 18 years of coaching.

Aren’t you worried about getting too far up field when knifing through?
You're getting doubled. Chances are the play is near by. Just knife through, get rid of your block or get dirt rolled. Dont play around

this guys awesome
Turning your shoulder also workers for getting out of double teams. Get low, turn your shoulder and press
That’s a hold

I get the concept but that’s straight up holding
been coaching high school football 15 years- not once has it ever been called when it’s applied to an Offensive Lineman.
