  • I've identified over 190 of the 320 cars found locked away in here, can anyone recognise any others? I will add them to the video along with corrections if confirmed 100%. What is that 2nd Formula race car?

Hi, I'm from Portugal... this is quite a novelty... I know this story very bwell, the cars belong to a friend of mine that during over 30 years boughts these cars - some of them left abandoned on the streets - and gathered more than 400 vehicles stored in different places such as this barn.

Any idea why he did it? I don't understand why he went to the length of welding the doors shut so that even he couldn't go in and tinker with them over the years. What was the passion if he couldn't access them?

What most people do not realize is how expensive it is to restore a car well. Most cars cost at least 50k Euro or a multiple of that. So sadly most of these cars are not worth anything. Just parts cars.

That was a superb job at identifying these cars. A couple points: At 2:19 and at 12:27 one can just see the bonnet of a red Austin Healey Sprite MkI. At 5:27 the Mini is an Austin, maybe as early as 61. At 7:48, the"Sprite MkII" is a MG Midget MkI due to the side chrome. At 9:33 the Mercedes cowl grille indicates it's a "heckflosse" from 61 or later, while the side lights indicate a 180 or 190 model.
I must say you have a sharp eye to see the Alfa Romeo Montreal and the Facel Vega FVS.
    Well done.

Thank you for your kind comments and useful hints to the cars you've mentioned. The car at 2:19 and 12:27 is indeed an Austin Healey Sprite Mk1. Cheers.
The Mini at 5:27 is most definitely a 1967 Austin Cooper and not a Morris as I had
described it - here's one here - www.collectioncar.com/detailed.php?ad=27072&category_id=1 same grille, bumpers and badge.
You suggest the car at 7:48 is a MG Midget Mk1 because of the side chrome, but this one has a door handle on the outside which rules this out, no?
The Merc at 9:33 has always attracted comment, and I know now it's not a 1956 model -the front bumper is unusual but the car is most likely to be a 190 C Heckflosse W 110 around 1964 - like this. www.flickr.com/photos/34107011@N08/3915118990/

    • @frogeye6161

***** How right you are regarding the Midget having a door handle, I was just about to conclude it was a Midget Mk2, until I saw the side curtains. Door handles were often added later, but having side curtains it must be earlier.
Sprites and Midgets with side curtains never had door handles from the factory. www.carandclassic.co.uk/uploads/cars/mg/5107630.jpg .
Those with door handles had roll-up windows. The change came at the same time as the door was completely redesigned. www.britishv8.org/MG/KurtAppley/KurtAppley-AE.jpg .
      Therefore modified Midget Mk1 :)

@@TheExStig Frogeye61 is quite correct, the car at 7:48 is definitely a Mk 1 MG Midget. This model had no external door handle, but the Midgets had the chrome strip down the sides and the A-H Sprites never did. Always a quick way to tell them apart.

A journalist that knew about it convinced him to go there and take some pictures and the novelty begun there with the next person adding a little of romance to the story. True is that all models have been/are being sold, some after restauration, some in the condition of the film and all the romance about it played a good part on turning the sales easier...

The owner of the cars was a car dealer in the 1970s and 1980s, and decided to save the more interesting cars that came through his doors. When the barn was full, he padlocked and soldered the doors shut. The photos were taken by Manuel Menezes Morais and has been sworn to secrecy about the location and the owners name.

Wow what I find. They are all rare cars indeed. It's a crying shame their left sitting in a barn like that. Cars like this need to be driven. loved, restored, seen by others who love cars for what they are. Part of our motoring history. I myself own a classic car, although it's not as old as some of these cars but every day less and less are being seen on the road. I know there will be lots of people say that's not a classic car but how old does a car have to be before it's classic? My car is 26 years old and still runs and looks like a new car it's been in my shed for 11 years now and has never been touched since it was new. Original motor, gearbox, and body. Even the same paint too and it doesn't have the headlining hanging down like most cars I see on the road. No parts hanging off it and no broken lights. It gets driven every Sunday for 1 hour to keep the car in top condition. Most people forget that a car is a machine and if its not used it will degrade faster letting it sit.My car is a classic Nissan Skyline. Or as my son says it's OLD SKOOL DAD. Don't sell it cause someone will just turn it into a drift car and wreck it.

Sorry to interrupt! My elderly aunt has a large collection of Motor Sports magazine dating back to 1943. They were collected and lovingly kept in very good condition by her late husband who was an engineer and a car enthusiast. She doesn't want to keep them as she's looking to downsize her home. She's giving them away for free to anyone who's willing to pick them up at her home (she lives in north London), sending them via post is not practical as they are quite heavy and she's not able to manage it. It would make her day knowing the magazines go to someone who will appreciate it as much as her late husband. If anyone is interested, please send me a message. Cheers!

  • @jamesshunt5123

This is not car collecting or car enthusiasm, this is car *hoarding* . He must have have had an insane infatuation for cars and collected them for the sake of collecting. That he kept them locked away and hidden proves it. He didn't want anybody else to even have a look at his cars or even offer him a nice price to buy one or a few of them. When a car enthusiast can't find time or gets too old to take car of his cars or they just collect dust over the years it's a nice thing to sell them to other enthusiasts who'll keep them running in pristine order. That's passing the torch.
I mean this guy is like an Egyptian pharao, getting buried together with his treasure so that it can be his in the afterlife too. You can't take your treasure with you buddy, when you're dead you're gone.
Although I don't like jumping to conclusions regarding people my guess is this person was one of those lonely, old, rich folks who isolated himself like Greta Garbo and compensated his lack of social interaction with cars.
I also doubt all these cars can just be dusted off and driven away, they will require some work.

I don,t think your giving the collector enough credit . Where else in the World does a history timeline of cars exist. If he was advertising & allowing the viewing of them . He would be constantly be harassed to sell them or break them down for sale as parts .Or be at risk of having them stolen . To restore them & keep them in mint working condition may not have been financially possible. Hoarding would be more like a wreckers yard of cars of same makes models & random years scattered & grouped with no real thought other than i might get it going or need a part one day .This seams like an attempt to save as many special makes & models and park them carefully for the future when they die. For car lovers to enjoy ,(starting with this video) the discovery of them & hopefully the restoration & creation of a musem

"The story behind the pictures: a property on the outskirts of Lisbon, Portugal, which belonged to a former dealer of vehicles was sold after his death, and what drew the attention of the buyer was a barn that had the doors sealed by welding. So that was open, showed a real treasure - dozens of cars, acquired by the former owner to compose your personal collection. Under the dust accumulated for years, rarities of European and U.S. automotive industries, such as Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Alfa-Romeo, Lotus, among others. Some very damaged, but others in conservation status impeccable."

This is a fabulous collection, but no barn find, more of a haphazard "I will put all the interesting cars I trade from my car sales business and put them in a barn because I can", and you cannot but admire the guy, "I want one of those in my barn so I can just enjoy what a designer can do with metal and walk past and think, that's a beautiful thing" the guy knew what he had, good taste in cars, and 40ish years to enjoy them. Kudos. He knew classics before they became classics. Can you imagine occasionally walking through this collection before it became public, stroking a fender and thinking... These are all mine!

I love "Bolero", but I'm not sure that it really fits the theme of this video.
We appear to be looking at cars mostly in pretty poor condition. Not wrecks, but definitely well-used and probably not stored in running condition. What most people would call junkers. And nothing was done to keep them from deteriorating in storage over the years, not even rolling up the windows in many cases! Makes you wonder how the cars came to be collected and then stored away so carelessly for so many years.

  • @richardhill2643

it is not a "Barn Find" The owner had been collecting these cars and storing them in this building. I remember getting photos of this in an e-mail in 1999 (yes, we did have e-mails way back then), the story was that a retired couple bought a farm in Portugal but didn't have time to look in the big barn until they had been there for a while and of course after cutting their way in (because all of the doors were welded up, they discovered that they had bought millions of dollars worth of cars. Of course this was bullshit and a quick websearch found the real story, that the owner was a collector of cars and was still storing them in this barn. They are not abandoned, just a bit dusty. Nice that you have labelled them, though

    • @TheExStig

+Richard Hill There are two stories to this find...the one depicted in the video and the "other" one you mention, but the problem with that tale is it has always maintained only 180 cars were inside when in fact there were over 300! Someone who wasn't there made the photos available on the internet without actually knowing how many cars were inside? Also there is absolutely no proof the owner was ever a car dealer, this appears to be a "myth" which surfaced around 2007, this makes the "other" story highly dubious indeed.
It would be fair to say we probably won't ever know the 'real' story behind this find though.

I was pretty stoked to have a '69 coronet super bee. then I woke up... lol. thanks for reminding me of one of the coolest dreams I've ever had and hope you guys have fun with these 180 cars.

The car at 1:27 with the …1950… on it is a Triumph Mayflower. They were made between 1949 and 1953. It's my favourite car. Please send it to me to be fixed and loved. I notice that many cars have tyres with plenty of tread left. And no dents anywhere. These cars were used but not flogged and then retired before they were worn out. With air in tyres, new battery and fresh fuel many of these cars would easily start. I would love to find a "barn" like this.

There is some of mistakes in recognising a cars...
    At 3:54 it is not a 1939 BMW 327/28, it's a 501/502 from '50/'60.
At 6:30 is Mini Cooper from '80, not 1968 Morris Cooper.
    At 9:13 is not VW 1302S, it is a '50 VW 1200.
At 10:05 - Hillman Imp was produced 1963-1976, not '50.
14:25 is a Formula Vee car.

I have already corrected those errors using the TH-cam 'Annotations' feature.
Please note that Annotations ONLY appear on standard TH-cam players and embedded players.
Annotations do NOT appear on custom TH-cam chromeless players, or on mobile, tablet and TV devices.
The Mini at 6.30 is a '68 Cooper S, 1980 models had an indicator light fitted on the front wings just above the wheel arch this feature was added to the Mini around '72.
Thanks for your input it's much appreciated.

    • @YaniEnglish
      @YaniEnglish 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

***** Not the all Mini '80 models has side indicators, they were fitted only on some markets.
I reckon is a '80s model (mk V), because of different front bumper and wheelarches extensions.

They are indeed very similar mate, but Netherlands old plates have dots separating the numbers and letters and Portuguese ones have a small have a "-" separating the Letters and numbers, like "FH-22-41"
And the type of letter is slightly different.
      Cheers

Dutch plates were dark blue + white. Portuguese plates in that time were black + white. So it could be Portuguese plates. Dutch read (my car 1965 GM-68-75) These are different.

I am not sure, if all these cars have been owned through a legal way, I think that family had slaughtered the owners of these cars in a different decades, like what usually happens in the Hollywood's horror movies. To prove my claim, you can see the wall stained with spots of blood in addition to that, most of these cars were parked in a strange way, as if its owners do not want to use again, and also most of cars's windows are remained wide open.

    Good Day,
Woo, that is, by far, *the* highest amount of unrestored "classics/antiques" I have ever seen!
My impression of the Building etc I say the original owner sealed the place up in 1990, +/- 2 Years.
If He is still alive, He could cash in on what would have been an amazing investment.
I doubt a Cash investment could accrue value like this Stable of beauties undoubtedly has!
It's high Time these Time Machines cease to be Bird & Mouse poop accumulators.
Anther thing; it's bad to have them all clustered in ONE Building!
I have heard *MANY* Times, News Stories of Fires breaking out in Auto Barns & loss of the entire collection. A Strom can drop the Roof down also.

At 1.51 the red car by the Volvo is a Honda 360.
At 7.48 the car identified as an Austin Healey seems more likely to be an MGB .
At 11.23 the white car at the right of the Lincoln is a Citroen GS Break .
    At 13.11 i think you`re right about the Citroen 11BL , but it could also be a 15BL .

    • @TheExStig
      @TheExStig  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks, the red car at 1:51 by the Volvo is indeed a Honda, it isn't an N360 though, it's a 1968 N600.
The Austin Healey 7:48 is not an MGB, but a Mk2 Sprite.
The white car 11:23 is as you say a Citroen GS Break a 1974 version.
The Citroen at 13:11 is definitely a 11BL.
