    What a great family to ask for help while he was so young! He's sweet and calm now, but from experience I've seen that clingy dogs can become SUPER anxious and obnoxious if not treated to socialize early on. It's great that Victoria has built up her business that she can work with open families who just want to help their pups rather than the more toxic ones she used to work with in earlier years.

    • @KellysGarden
      @KellysGarden ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree. Victoria is the best. I had a puppy just like this but maybe even worse. We worked really hard at socializing in an attempt to build her confidence in the world but because she was so fearful, and we forced too much too soon, it ended up making her more anxious. 2 years later we are still working on confidence but are much more knowledgeable and capable. But it's so much work to try and undo your mistakes. Building confidence and foundational skills (like teaching them their name) are so much more important than obedience and what people traditionally think if as socializing. This is so great that this family learned these things so early on. They would have ended up with a very anxious dog otherwise. And I know first hand how difficult that is, especially when you know you contributed to the problem (before you knew better of course)

  • @christinaandre6286

    All these people on here commenting about how this family did no research. The pets on this show are scheduled months before filming, there is a long vetting process and setup before Victoria comes out. This family likely called Victoria when they knew they were getting a puppy, and agreed to do the show so they filmed their new puppy owner struggles in preparation for filming. I think the episode is great, because the purpose was specifically to help me puppy owners learn what to do with the same problems almost every puppy has.

It was also nice to see that these guys actually wanted to take their dog out for walks and realized it was important even if the puppy was resistant and scared at first. My puppy is about 20 weeks now, had her since 8 weeks and exposed her to a ton of experiences and started training right away, which is why I think she’s really brave and obedient but I definitely think if I started later it would’ve been much more difficult, so it’s great to see this pup on the right track now!

      Why are you judging the mom? It looks like she’s a single mother and we have no idea if the kids father got them the dog. She may have just been angry they got the dog without her permission. At the end, we can see she loves her puppy.

      Also just going by the fact she got a pup in the first place, the dog was probably MEAN'T to be for the kids, rather than her.

    A lot of people are talking about research…. But I’m sure there are things that will happen and be learned through experience. You can look up about owning a dog for years but actually owning one is drastically different in some cases.
    The reality of owning her puppy was different then the dream played out in her head.
    This made her feel she should get professional help to be sure she gets things right. And I would say that’s very responsible to ask for help and not just wait.
    The reason people won’t seek help earlier is because of people like in the comments saying “oh you should have done research” they will shy away from the help with all the judgment.

      You are very correct. There is no manual on how you raise your specific dog in your specific situation. You always only get generalities or biased opinions.
      That said, studying before and during is incredibly helpful. Especially during, because you can see how it works in real time.
      Sometimes we need teachers, and that's okay.

    Getting the dog from a good breeder would have helped prevent a lot of these issues. Both in the dog's genetic temperament (nervousness, lack of self-assuredness, environmental sensitivity) and in the "nurture" aspect (early exposure and desensitization etc)
    My puppy came to me at 10.5 weeks right off an 8 hour flight over the Atlantic and not so much as an inkling of fear or shyness from him. Not then, and not now at 17 months of age. Because he has an extremely solid genetic temperament and his breeder did tons of early exposure and desensitization with him before he left her.

      It was interesting that the puppy was 18 weeks and they said they got him 3 weeks ago, meaning he was 15 weeks when they got him. I know some breeders do keep puppies for longer to socialize and put a foundation on them, but it seems like this little guy wasn’t exposed to very much since he was so frightened of being outside. I got my puppy at 8 weeks and by 12 weeks she had been exposed and desensitized to a ton of things, and now at 20 weeks she has a dog door and is allowed to free roam our small ranch and will follow me without a leash on hikes and in unfamiliar areas. It just seems so odd to me that this puppy acted more like 8-10 week old than an 18 week old, but so glad the family was able to see what a sweet dog he could be!

    With a puppy like that it would be better to carry or drive him to an area, if there's a park nearby, for example. And then stay there for a bit, or go home from there. Or just sit and let him get used to the sights and sounds. I also think that you should always let a puppy sleep in the same room as someone in the family when that little. Then gradually change that as it grow older and more secure, if you absolutely don't want the dog in the bedroom.
